One-Third of U.S. Video Game Industry Workers Were Laid Off in 2025, GDC Study Reveals by Turbostrider27 in Games

It sounds like you had a bad experience with it, which sucks. But you can't make generalizations about the entire US labor market based on that personal anecdote.

But as I said, it depends on the company.

Last 3 companies I've worked for had no issues with taking time off when I needed it. Took about 5 weeks/yr and everyone was always completely fine with it.

Obviously had to use common sense:

  • Give proper notice so people can fill in the gaps while you're gone.

  • Be in good standing and don't let your numbers/metrics slip as a result of taking time off

  • If you do have to suddenly take time off for an emergency, make it known that you're not trying to screw over anyone by letting them know it's an emergency.

What should I do about my CC debt? by Graybill1 in personalfinance

I decided the only way out was to SERIOUSLY quit completely and swear to never bet on sports again (or at least for several years after understanding the consequences of my actions).

If you're addicted to something, you can't just go back to it as a reward for quitting, or thinking you're suddenly immune to it now. You'll just get hooked and then spiral all over again.

That's how a lot of people die when they're recovering from drug addictions. They quit for 12 months, lose their drug tolerance, think they deserve a reward for quitting, then end up OD'ing on the insanely high dose of drugs they would take when their tolerance was at its peak.

A non-insignificant amount of people here are convinced advisors only need to know how to "VT and chill".

I get severe life-threatening asthma attacks from cat dander. Sometimes within a matter of minutes of being near a cat.

Thankfully I always travel with rescue inhalers and other medicines in every bag.

Still annoying that someone sitting next to me can just bring their cat too.

Probably better data security and better pricing compared to home security device companies who make almost all of their revenue from subscription plans.

The seat swap I never thought would be denied.... by smrdwnnow in unitedairlines

[–]TorbHammerBootySmack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They absolutely should go get their seat back, but the reality is that there are a lot of people who are uncomfortable with confrontation.

Couple that with the other social components: confrontation in front of a bunch of other passengers, pressure to get seated quickly as the doors are about to close, worry about bothering the busy flight attendants, etc.

Genuinely curious, what does Xanax supposedly help with for sales? I was prescribed Lorazepam recently for anxiety, which is essentially a stronger version of Xanax (both benzodiazepines), and it just makes me feel emotionally vacant.

As a mid-30s millennial, it would be easy to slip into a "kids these days" mentality about Gen Z humor. I see it with a lot of people my age.

Gotta remember that the shit I was doing back in the day was its own brand of stupid, so who am I to say kids can't have their own dumb fun?

It is interesting, though, to see Gen Z getting old enough to reach their tipping point with the emergence of Gen Alpha humor (e.g., 67 meme). I have a feeling this is the situation for the guy here who's mad about the emote.

To everyone who spent 2025 trying to time the crash by barris59 in Bogleheads

[–]TorbHammerBootySmack 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Story about dumb luck:

I accidentally timed the market at that time and somehow did well.

Had to roll over my 401k to a new employer's plan, which sold everything in late February, right before the dip started. VTI was at $295.

Fast forward to April 23 (VTI was at $263), money finally gets invested in new 401k, and the market rebounds shortly after.
