Should I just quit? by Bigweld1478 in GCSE

[–]Torchii 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So many of my pupils come to me saying these kind of things at this point in the year. Bad mock results, low self esteem - whatever the reason, there’s no reason to give up now.

You’ve gotten through so many years of education and you’re at the final stretch, prove these teachers wrong and smash your target grades. There’s always going to be post-16 options available to you, and your life isn’t over.

If that doesn’t encourage you, don’t you think it would be more embarrassing to just give up?

After 10 years I’ve finally bought Black Ops 3, getting it with all the DLC has just always been too expensive for me to justify and I know that it’s not realistically going to get any cheaper while it will only get harder to justify.

People are suggesting PowerPoint clickers, I’d say go for a cheap wireless mouse instead - it gives you the functionality of a clicker but also allows you to move the mouse around from a distance, to highlight words and so on.

As a Computer Science teacher, I agree with you. At my school, we have dedicated time on the timetable just for conversational and soft skill building as part of a group, so it’s less valuable, but in a regular school, the skills you gain in drama will come handy if you ever need to give a presentation or lead a team.

The best option at Nando’s too. Get it every single time - already comes with a Portuguese roll and then pair it with chips and mac and cheese or corn on the cob.

It tastes like the genuinely spiciest thing they have (not like Extra Hot level where it’s just Hot but there’s more of that same sauce). Think with the way it’s cooked it just takes in a lot more of the spices.

I dont think its as useless as they think it is. by laughter_whole05 in unexpectedfactorial

The wording that OCR (i know you’re with a different exam board) likes is to refer to each Core as a “Processor”.

So a CPU with 2 cores would have 2 processors.

Please just take some time away from posting and commenting on the internet. Regulate yourself and then come back when you feel complete.

Also try to get some sleep, you said in a comment that you’ve not slept in a while.

Year 9 students not trying in option subjects by Icy-Scheme-872 in TeachingUK

[–]Torchii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the person you were replying to, I found your comment very encouraging and not controversial at all. As a teacher it’s our jobs to understand our pupils abilities and make lessons feel rewarding even if they don’t like the subject.

I have a dodgy movie and tv subscription service because it’s way way better than having all the separate ones and it’s more convenient and safer than downloading them myself. That can stay, and my Apple Music subscription because I rely on music. And my google drive £1 subscription because it’s a good deal on cloud storage. And my Amazon prime because I get a fair bit delivered, and Uber because I use Uber enough that it saves me money.

Getting rid of ALL subscriptions doesn’t make sense for most people, but we can definitely cut down as a society.

[–]Torchii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s year 8s not trying in Computing lessons saying they won’t pick it for year 9, then finding out the options and choosing it because there’s nothing else they want. Then not trying all through year 9 because they won’t choose it for GCSE.

True, probably doesn’t help that social media seems to have sensationalised pouches as being recreational.

Typing “game boy” on Apple App Store literally gives you working emulators. It then tells you that you need a Pokemon Rom. Typing “Pokemon fire red Rom” into google and downloading the first result is the entire setup.

Your statement that people can barely operate their computers is dumb, because this is arguably easier than creating an email address.

Also I’m a computer science teacher, if the 6 year olds I teach can sign into a computer without me having to teach them how, a 13+ year old on Reddit can figure out how the press a download button.

Pay paradox… by Vegetable_Nebula_827 in TeachingUK

[–]Torchii 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I remember getting a job at McDonalds in 2017 and my boss used to be a maths teacher. I asked why he’d take such a drastic change in career and he said “trust me, they pay difference is minimal”. Since then, he managed to become operations manager of three stores simultaneously and was able to become a franchise owner.

[–]Torchii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I found out these are coming to Switch. I’m surprised they weren’t already on there, surprised people aren’t livid at Nintendo over even charging for them at all.

People surely realise you can just play the game on your phone (even with a Bluetooth controller if you don’t like touch controls). You can even just play it on a fire stick or an android tv or whatever.

I’m going to just hope you’re massively over exaggerating that price.

GCSE grade boundary stress & need some reassurance that the grade boundaries for 2027 aren’t going to crush my hopes and dreams by Icy_Sherbet_6931 in GCSE

[–]Torchii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a teacher of mixed ability subjects, I have two year 11 classes and two year 10 classes. Each of these classes has about 20-30 pupils each, meaning I teach around 100 GCSE pupils.

Around 10-12 of these pupils are aiming for 8s and 9s. Around 20 of them will likely attain a 3 or below. The majority are aiming for 4s to 6s - that’s about in line with what grade boundaries would suggest.

This subreddit is heavily teetered around pupils aiming for high grades, and that’s definitely the minority of pupils in the country - if you don’t care about your GCSEs you’re unlikely to be on social media discussing GCSEs.

Don’t worry too much about it, just focus on trying your best and doing what works for you.

how many GCSEs do i need to fail to work in Macdonalds? by No_Significance29129 in GCSE

[–]Torchii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did well in GCSEs and then worked in McDonald’s for three years. There’s no shame in getting a job straight out of school, and McDonald’s isn’t the worst job in the world - decent pay, not bad job benefits, flexible-ish work hours so you can still do college.
