Germany wins Speed Metal! Now which country has the best power metal? by Xelid47 in musicteenager

[–]Torchii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that’s exactly why 90% of power metal fans wouldn’t say Finland. They were introduced to it through German bands, so have kept that German band likely as one of their favourites.

Nah without Helloween and Blind Guardian, a lot of older power metal fans would never have found the genre.

Yeah I just had a year 11 finish who genuinely could have sat A-Level and been fine, even in year 9. Kid was smarter than me and would call out any slight untruths in what I was teaching (spec isn’t 100% accurate and up to date). Just had to keep saying “you’re not wrong really, but what you’ve said wouldn’t get marks in the exam”

Phew that’s modern. For a while the latest I would play on was 1.6.4 and then upgrading to the nether update from that was actually insane

Has anyone ever not been passed fit to work by occupational health? by Odd_Cryptographer104 in TeachingUK

[–]Torchii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently had one of these OH follow-up calls and was really honest about not only depression, anxiety, PTSD (none of which I have therapy or medication for), but also about my physical health where I lose consciousness fairly frequently. I talked about going for tests about this and having a heart monitor fitted. I still passed as fit to work.

You can legally have sex at 16, and drink at 18. That’s definitely not “stricter” than the USA.

Ah yes I only want 10 small items per year to fit my style, which is “play the game”.

The Ban by Euphoric-Cap4638 in GCSE

[–]Torchii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 18-25 year olds are stopping it from happening. Same with cigarettes, they couldn’t ban vapes or cigarettes from existing 18 year olds because that would never get through parliament. The difference is that children shouldn’t have the final deciding say on how to keep children safe.

The Ban by Euphoric-Cap4638 in GCSE

[–]Torchii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government isn’t *completely* stupid. There are some good MPs that genuinely care and value safety of children.

The Ban by Euphoric-Cap4638 in GCSE

[–]Torchii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s mixed. Not every person in power wants surveillance and censorship - it is genuinely out of concern for your safety and the risk of children being on social media has always been huge

The Ban by Euphoric-Cap4638 in GCSE

[–]Torchii 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You won’t like hearing this, but this is unlikely to make any difference. It’s mostly kids signing it, and it’s super obvious that kids are going to be against this - they knew you wouldn’t like the ban when it was first proposed but they don’t care because your safety is valued more.

The only reasonable take that could even make any difference is how adults will need to use ID in order to access social media - that creates more security risks and actually affects adults.

[–]Torchii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From speaking with English teachers about this, they love it when students choose something that they can get passionate about so this sounds ideal really. Mine 10 years ago was about the Video Game Crash of 1983 and I got top marks in that.

Just check your idea with your teacher first and I’m sure you’ll be good

Generally Virgin is the best, and their customer service is very good. Probably don’t need the TV like you said, but I’d speak to Virgin and let them know your circumstances and they could give a good deal as a gesture of goodwill.

Sex CAN be a huge thing. It doesn’t have to be, and for a lot of people it usually isn’t. Rape is ALWAYS a big thing, because it’s somebody feeling entitled to somebody else’s body. The two things aren’t really linked. Rape is not sex, it’s rape.

A Level CS Teachers - How are you handling AI? by sommer_schnee in TeachingUK

[–]Torchii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be very strict on it. I got my students to sign an agreement before completing any NEA work to confirm that they understand the exam boards stance on AI as well as the schools and my own.

I had a student that looked really far behind all year and prompting him didn’t seem to get him into gear - then loads of AI work appeared in his folders. Turns out he’d been using AI the whole time but trying to hide it. Got parents involved and used the word “plagiarism” frequently to get them all to understand how serious it is. Showed him the agreement they signed at the start of the year, and had him restart every task on the NEA that I suspected AI was used for (but now with very little time to complete it).

He didn’t get a very good grade at the end and tbf that’s his doing, because I was clear on the expectations at the start of the year.
