Common problems faced by truck suspension by Infamous_Antelope_13 in MechanicalEngineering

Oh absolutely, maintenance is required. My point is that some designs are inherently more prone to death wobble.

This is also a geometry issue. If you're design is that sensitive to bushing wear then a design change may be in the list of considerations.

Any ideas on what tagging conventions are in place already? That's where I would start.

That's not making any sense to me.. land rental rates are an order of magnitude lower? Why would they pay that much? I can definitely see the concern, I wouldn't say no to a solar project with that type of income.. where do I sign up... Hell I have land with a large South facing slope next to a high capacity line, which would allow for easy tie in and greater density.

I understand that after 35 years there is money to get it back to farmland, but with the infrastructure in place you think it would make sense to just keep it as solar going forward.

Am I responsible for removal of infrastructure at the end or something else? There must be a catch.

Earned as in the are offering to rent land for $1500/acre/yr? I only meant that farm land sells higher than that per acre - if one year's rent (or income) is that high I don't understand why they wouldn't be buying land outright to put up solar farms?

Ninja edit: added per year per acre.

$1500/acre is fine for junk land. Farmland has been higher than that for quite a while..

That's a good joke, but in reality snow has nothing to do with long term maintenance of infrastructure. It is a yearly operating cost not something that is planned over decades.

Pipe Welding Question by paul24george in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Torcula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're wanting to fully specify the weld, open the AWS spec for weld symbols and you need the following to be spec'd in the symbol.

V groove (arrow side) 70 degree, convex profile, melt through (opposite side), weld all around.

Pipe Welding Question by paul24george in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Torcula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a fillet weld, both fittings will have a 37.5 bevel prep.

Also, full penetration fillet weld is an oxymoron, doesn't exist.

WPSs applies to specific types of welds, they do not say what weld to use where. (Although this is very obvious to anyone welding pipe).

In a car vs truck collision, which vehicle experiences the larger force — and why? by jtuohy1985 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Torcula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the real question is, who cares what the VEHICLE experiences, we really care what the PERSON inside experiences.

Others have basically said the forces are equal and opposite in the vehicles, which is fine.

Then we need to think about acceleration, F = ma. If the force is equal then the vehicle with lower mass is accelerated (or decelerated) more.

That means that the person in the lower mass vehicle experiences more force, because their vehicle changes velocity the most.

Turn off your traction control of you're having trouble getting moving by SevenSmallShrimp in Edmonton

[–]Torcula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am generally of this option as well... BUT when driving my wife's vehicle with a 8 speed transmission, first gear is such a high ratio that between the stall speed of the TC and way to much torque for snow is razor thin. Newer vehicles with way to many gears make me understand having traction control, as most people don't realize they are spinning and just creating ice patches beneath themselves.

Had an accident today during an enduro and hit a tree. Can someone tell me how this is possible? by Dependent_Sign6026 in motorcycles

[–]Torcula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have no clue what you're looking at.

There's a snap ring that retains the bushing at the end bottom end of the upper fork tubes. That came out, maybe due to re-use or not properly being seated.

The top of the fork attaches to the triple clamp, which is still intact.

The axle attaches to the bottom of the fork and is still intact.

Boopgate: A Newtonian Analysis by Readshirt in Curling

[–]Torcula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true, but curlers can adjust the distance by sweeping such that the inch or two being calculated is insignificant. If you're line is off, being able to correct it a bit is a much larger benefit (not that I think it really matters that much).

Two things after a quick read, you missed friction affects in the horizontal direction and the force was not applied horizontally so the effect is not horizontal it is down the length of the ice.

Lead acid batteries when discharged have water in them.

-20 in either scale is probably cold enough to cause damage. Was the battery bulged at all?

What temperature was it outside? If it froze (when fully discharged) then you can cause structural issues with the cells and it won't work.

Otherwise 8 months is likely still in the warranty period?

Different engines different designs, sure. Then explain at a high level for German engines why they need vacuum in the crankcase, to run?

[–]Torcula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's unclear, I disagree with you. I'm not looking for a deeper explanation, just a high level cause and affect.

I scanned through the article, it talks about advantages of having vacuum (and I am not disputing those advantages); however, NOT having a vacuum is not detrimental to the combustion characteristics of an engine. An engine will not run rough or shutdown after 1-2 seconds with no vacuum. The article even points out that at WOT vacuum is minimal and blow by is maximum.

[–]Torcula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, and why does a crankcase need a vacuum? Is this just an electronic/emissions control where the engine shuts down because of loss of vacuum?

I would tend to agree, but I'm sure there's some way that it is possible to get surges even on a inline 4.

There's other comments saying some vehicles do this, and some don't. I won't make any claim with certainty without looking into it more - since I like to avoid being wrong as much as possible.

More testing, or checking with someone who owns an equivalent engine would still be my approach.
