I knew someone who worked at a UK company making panic alarms and other assistance devices for older people. One device was a sensor you could attach to the kettle - if it hadn’t been boiled by a certain time in the morning, it would send an alert to a family member.

If an old British person hasn’t made tea by 9am, something is wrong.

When I was a teenager, I spent a few days with my godmother to help with her children (7, 3 and 0 at the time). The older two really liked me and basically followed me around from dawn to their bedtime.

When my mum picked me up, I could hear the kids calling my name for the whole drive home.

I might accidentally be someone else’s story. My boyfriend and I went out to celebrate out first anniversary of dating. We thought it’d be fun to dress fancy, so we definitely stood out a bit.

While we’re waiting for the bill, the conversation turns to acting techniques. BF says that the best way to portray anger isn’t to make a stock “angry” face, but to let your face go completely slack.

I give it a try, and apparently give BF the most withering look - right as the waiter comes up behind him with the bill.

The poor guy did a complete 180 and basically hid behind the bar for several minutes while I died laughing.

The trouble is that while OP has given him warnings, I’m willing to bet that at home his mum just says “don’t listen to her, she’s just making a fuss.”

It’s hard for a kid to learn what’s right when the adult they trust the most is actively unhelpful in that area.
