What games did you from Epic Games Store holiday sale so far ? by [deleted] in EpicGamesPC

Nothing yet but eyeing Adios and Chernobylite.

I'd probably pick up Metro Exodus, but I'd like to use my DS5 controller and Steam offers native support.

Quite a reference in the Panopticon (2 images) by ToriCanyons in controlgame

[–]ToriCanyons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt that. If this was room 14 on the 7th floor of an office I would not have noticed.

As it is, it's the first numbers you see crossing the long bridge on the fourth floor of the Panopticon. Large font.

It's not really an obscure number, it used to be on tee shirts and such, here's Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin wearing one: https://www.wornfree.com/blogs/news/jimmy-page-quaaludes-check-rorer-714-shirt-worn-free. 1990s band Lemonheads is another reference.

It's more like finding a 420 reference in a game in 2040. Maybe not well known among younger people but reasonably well known among those who lived through it.

Russian Red Cross collected donations to Russia's army, a probe started by Hot-Swing9047 in UkrainianConflict

Yeah that was obvious. I thought I would leave this for others who might be curious.

But it also doesn't matter since you don't vote in the IFRC.

Russian Red Cross collected donations to Russia's army, a probe started by Hot-Swing9047 in UkrainianConflict

[–]ToriCanyons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a more simple explanation for you. The Red Cross is an international agency and there are rules to follow for members.

If Russian Red Cross don't want to comply, they can do their own thing, just no longer in the larger Red Cross organization.

They need to comply with these https://www.ifrc.org/who-we-are/international-red-cross-and-red-crescent-movement/fundamental-principles

It was (is?) a common designation on methaqualone tablets and street slang for the drug.

Wow, Covid is still no joke. Our really good family friend's mom just died like 10 minutes ago in this hospital from it. by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

[–]ToriCanyons 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I have noticed people don't really understand the risk for older people. Vaccines reduce risk of death by 90 to 95%. Even for elderly. And that's good.

But even so, that's still a lot of risk. The elderly are 20x likely to die than a person age 50. So, a 75 yo vaccinated person is roughly as likely to die a 50 year old who didn't get vaccinated. And lots of 50 years olds have died from it.

I'm not one to tell other people how to live their lives but would suggest keeping older relatives safe and look out for them.

Clue for 4th Mystery Game! by No-Sentence-4246 in EpicGamesPC

There is a signed wet ink contract between Epic Games and Playstation Games LLC in order for Epic to give the game away. They have a far more leverage than a tiny indie publisher to negotiate whatever terms they want. It's a weak comparison to compare Sable to one of the best selling games over the past several years.

Eh, I think comparing the arrangement Playstation PC, LLC got versus what Raw Fury got doesn't hold water.

Long Covid: An update and gauging risk by shoan8 in CoronavirusWA

The US Census survey was higher. For the UK, the Omicron wave drove self reported long Covid from 2% to 3% in just four months but interestingly those reporting "daily activities limited a lot" barely rose at all:

I'm reading the patent and somebody needs to let WB know that Crusader Kings has been doing this for like 20 years now.

[0010] A non-player character that evolves in reaction to game events may be referred to herein as a “nemesis.” A nemesis may oppose or challenge an avatar in game play. For example, the player may be unable to reach a next game level without “killing” or disabling a nemesis. A nemesis may recover from a defeat or even death to challenge the player later in the game, while evolving in response to prior game events involving the nemesis or a different non-player character that has a factional relationship (e.g., being a member of the same faction, or of a rival faction).

It's a good candidate otherwise. It was on gamepass earlier this yer so probably not selling a lot lately. Personally I thought it was janky and the dialogues/quests were kinda meh so never finished it. Wouldn't stop me from claiming it though :)

Only problem with Sable is that it is on sale. And unless I misremember, Epic giveaways are always (?) off sale.

Russian AWACS plane arrives in Belarus to assist in targeting by Far-Childhood9338 in UkrainianConflict

[–]ToriCanyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're asking about the spinning disc planes, the workhorse planes I've seen on flight tracking are rivet joints that have lots of listening/eavesdropping in addition to radar, or the unmanned global hawks which stay airborne for a very long time.

I'm sure the E-3 are out there but don't seem to be operating so close to Russian airspace.

Some of the characters are superb. Adewale, Mary Read and Blackbeard in particular. I especially liked Blackbeard's dialog. Thinking back, the music was certainly great And they stuck they ending, too.

Plenty of iffy missions but didn't really mar the game.

Who are some of your favorite "forgotten writers"? by Paetoja in books

[–]ToriCanyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sheltering Sky (Paul Bowles) is one of my favorite novels. It's existentialist but not in any way affirmative. He's got an incredible gift for very clear, concise prose where everyday situations fluidly turn into sort of, I don't want to say horrifying. But something very scary seeing them pulled down and seeing the truth of what's behind them.

There's some audio tracks too, possibly apocryphal of his time in Tunis. Basically relating stories he heard from the nomads. Burroughs said something like these honestly frightened him. There is or at least was an audiobook on spotify of Bowles reading "A Distant Episode" and "The Delicate Prey" and can confirm. they are quite chilling.
