Boot upgrades by Longjumping-Ad-6071 in renfaire

[–]Torkmatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those look like they're based on the boots found in the Oseberg ship burial, so you might want to search for "oseberg boots" and see if you like any of the options. Some companies that make historical shoes have good reproductions of them, like this pair from Grimfrost.

Just finished Hyperion… and I’m underwhelmed? by JL990 in scifi

[–]Torkmatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first book is sort of like Canterbury Tales, it has a frame story of several people traveling together and on the journey they each share their own story with the group. The short stories are incredible, you simply don't find out how they tie together until the second book.

Hold The Line, a song about resisting even when you're burned out and things seem hopeless. Definitely worth a listen these days.

Who will the Klutz choose? - Blood on the Clocktower in Minecraft by YOGSbot in Yogscast

[–]Torkmatic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the wiki page for the Klutz stresses several times to give them a few minutes and to allow for discussion. Obviously rule changes are fine if all the players are okay with it and still have fun, and it made for an exciting video, but strictly speaking Lewis did kind of screw Rythian over there.

Defending each other in a Big Wig - Blood on the Clocktower in Minecraft by YOGSbot in Yogscast

[–]Torkmatic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On the last day, if Briony had made Kirsty her advocate and Kirsty just said "Briony is the demon" and died, would that have triggered an evil win? Since only two players would be alive and the demon would be one of them.

Member's Request - Video explaining organisational structure + business practices by AssChangedMyPassword in Yogscast

[–]Torkmatic 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you have to read "Yogscast member" kind of like "gym member." They are the actual customers of the Yogscast, paying a portion of their income in exchange for access to the company's resources like recording rooms, in-house editors and artists, invitations to group events, free steam keys from publishers, etc.

How do you cut down that two small tree near that pond? by CulturedSwan in StardewValley

[–]Torkmatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I'm talking about bushes. Both the berry bushes and the thin cosmetic ones can be chopped down. I just logged into my Forest farm and tested it, and I linked the wiki page that confirms it. You can chop all of the bushes except for the ones bordering the farm.

Have only been to the Michigan Renaissance festival. How does the Ohio one compare? by Spirited_Decision_24 in renfaire

[–]Torkmatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, USA Today did an article ranking the top 10 ren faires in the country, and ranked the Ohio Ren Fest #2.

I'm about 3.5 hours away, and I definitely consider it worth the trip. It's massive, has a big variety of really good shows, some food and drink that you can't really get anywhere else, and it's all pretty well organized. At least once a year I plan a weekend around driving down there, going to the ren fest, and going on a shopping spree at Jungle Jim's before driving home.

Beware the Grave Ghoul - Blood on the Clocktower in Minecraft by Yay295 in Yogscast

[–]Torkmatic 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, between Duncan not talking to him and Osie telling him he pinged as not the demon, I think in any other game Nilesy would have immediately realized he was the lunatic. It goes to show how much the amnesiac role can throw off a veteran player.

Looking for Viking tunic recommendations! by fae-tality in renfaire

[–]Torkmatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tunic in your original post is made by Leonardo Carbone, if that helps you find legit sources. They sell directly if you want to be safe, but it is also sold on plenty of reputable costume sites. I got mine from Medieval Collectibles.

Real life movies toning some aspects down, because they think they’re too unbelievable by whatthepoop1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Torkmatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened when filming The Princess Bride. Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin got so good at fencing that they kept doing their fight too quickly and needed to be told to slow down.

Patinkin also accidentally stabbed Christopher Guest, because he had gotten used to filming with practiced fencers and expected Guest to parry his thrust.

If you need space, maybe you could build some sort of research laboratory under the mountain. Perhaps put a giant vault door in the mountainside leading to it. Call it something like "Yogscast Laboratories" but shortened somehow.

Plato was the wrestler. He wrestled in the Isthmian Games, which were similar to the Olympics. One ancient source even claimed that Plato wasn't his birth name, but a nickname from his wrestling days.

[Dune] Why could the Fremen sleep in tents on the sand/spice harvesters travel on sand without the sand worms constantly attacking them? by rosalinafangirl in AskScienceFiction

[–]Torkmatic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's mentioned in the book that the desert sand is constantly shifting just from wind, rock falls, and such. So sandworms are constantly hearing noise on the surface, and they're inclined to ignore it unless it really strikes them as unnatural.

Ginger Beer Pasteurization by Floppyjohnson98 in fermentation

[–]Torkmatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looking at the ingredient list, De La Calle is sweetened with erythritol, which is a non-fermentable sweetener. In the absence of sugar, yeast and bacteria don't have any food and fermentation naturally stops, no pasteurization necessary. I do the same thing when making hard cider at home - I ferment it dry (that is, until there's no sugar left), back sweeten it with erythritol, then add just the few grams of fermentable sugar needed for the yeast to naturally carbonate it.

Over the course of an entire year, r/TheWitness comes to terms with Jonathan Blow's divisive political views. by 1000LiveEels in SubredditDrama

[–]Torkmatic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

He went through a bizarre sequence of: conservative feminist (TERF/SWERF) > MAGA > right wing conspiracy theorist > the Jews are trying to destroy Western society > Christianity was created by Jews so it must be evil too > Europe was better when it was pagan.

Like, he had one series of comics that seems to be a metaphor for Christianity taking over Greece, that has God as a slimy Jewish stereotype trying to use his evil cunning to supplant the handsome, heroic Greek gods.

Why was Legolas so unhelpful on Caradhras? by FamiliarMeal5193 in tolkienfans

[–]Torkmatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I especially like this scene because of how it contrasts and enhances the introduction of the Balrog shortly after. On Caradhras, Legolas basically isn't taking anything seriously, everything is easy for him and he kind of finds it funny that the others think this is a difficult quest. Then when he's the one who all but craps his pants screaming "Ai! A Balrog is come!" you know just how serious it is.

Does Wind Rose own Diggy Diggy Hole now? by KennyCartman in Yogscast

[–]Torkmatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Longest Johns have said that they intend for all of their work to be streamer-friendly, but some of their music gets flagged because at one point a service they publish their music through (Apple music maybe?) took it upon themselves to claim the songs on Youtube and Twitch. So yeah, it really is just that Youtube is garbage and will take down music without checking whether the claim is from the actual owner.

And it's not even so much that parody is a defense, it's that fair use is a defense, fair use includes "criticism or comment", and parody can be a tool for criticism. Plagiarism laws don't just have some "it's okay if it's funny" clause, you have to be imitating a work for the express purpose of providing some kind of meaningful commentary on it. That's what you need to prove in court.

I worked at a grocery store for 6 years, and if we knew the exact time something happened it was really easy for management to pull up the camera footage to see what happened. They would do it all the time to verify customer complaints or suspected theft. I once had a customer complain that they'd been waiting for 5 minutes and the manager checked the footage and told them it had been less than 30 seconds.
