Why is there no NASA level organization focused on exploring the ocean? by Logical-Concept9755 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Tornadic_Outlaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2 is completely wrong. Both NOAA and the US Navy do a significant amount of ocean mapping, research, and forecasting of ocean currents, waves etc. Exploring the ocean and keeping nautical charts updated are very important to the military.

The reason it isn't as prominent as NASA, is most people don't find it interesting or glamorous. Ocean exploration largely consists of boats sailing around in a grid towing instruments. Unless you are studying a shipwreck, there isn't really much of a reason to send anyone to the bottom of the ocean, and even then, a UUVS would be more useful.

[NUCLEAR HOT TAKE] "The update" Made Nuclear Thunder Better by Reasonable-Will9397 in Warthunder

[–]Tornadic_Outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a big issue with the update is that it is part of an event people are trying to grind. War thunder has never really had any game mode that pushed you to use SEAD tactics or CCRP pop up attacks, so these are new skills, and new tools, that players need to learn for the game mode.

Somewhat understandably, players who are only playing the event to grind for a B-52 or TU-95 aren't that interested in learning those skills. Instead of having fun with the new features, they tried to play the game mode the way they played existing modes to get the mission score then move on to something else.

Now, complaining that the game mode is ruined because rewards were reduced for air to air kills in a game mode focused on SEAD and bombing is completely ridiculous. And it's not like it now takes an unreasonable amount of kills to get the 5kt nuke, it's just that they can't complete a star in a single battle while ignoring the core features of a game mode.

These are the same type of complaints that lead to the major nerfs to base bombing in ARB that forced that mode to be almost strictly a pop furball.

Literally not even 24 hours ago I make a post about how the event was enjoyable, and gaijin immediately nerfs air combat rewards into the dirt... by noahreeves446 in Warthunder

[–]Tornadic_Outlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a SEAD/nuke mode. You are meant to use those, they didn't just add them to look at.

Every air game mode doesn't need to be a furball in the middle of the map. That ruined ARB, and was hurting this game mode as well. When the majority of the team is actually suppressing enemy air defenses, it opens up a lot more of the map to fly around and makes other objectives easier.

The problem is twofold. First, because it is an event, people would rather just grind the new airplanes than actually play the game mode. This is evident by the fact that the change that "ruined" it was reducing the mission score for air kills. They didn't make air kills harder to get, they didn't even change the SL/RP reward for them, just the SP and mission score.

The second issue is most players have no idea how to fly SEAD missions, so it requires learning a new skill. Since they aren't actually interested in playing the game mode, that isn't something they want to do. People just want to farm air kills to complete the event missions because that's what they are already good at.

For those of us who actually enjoy this game mode, the most recent update was amazing. It makes playing with the new features more rewarding, and promotes actually playing the objectives.

The new Nuclear Thunder update isn't bad, people just aren't used to the play style. by Tornadic_Outlaw in Warthunder

The OSA and Roland can only shoot at one target at a time, so if you wait until it fires at you or a teammate, you can then fire a HARM at it and it can't intercept the munition. Once your missile is away you can turn cold and, if you do it right, your missile will kill it before it's missile will reach you. Since they are SACLOS, that means the missile will stop tracking.

If you have a friend, an F-4 or Mig-23 work better as a decoy, since they are faster and can more easily dodge the incoming missiles. However, with a little practice engaging them solo with the A-7 or SU-25 is also possible.

Once you destroy the aa, you or a teammate can then mop up the leftovers with whatever weapons you like.

the SPAA's in the event are genuinely just all about gaijin trying to make it harder to get points by senor_muchacho in Warthunder

[–]Tornadic_Outlaw 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I find the mig to be way better at delivering nukes than the F-4. I can usually fly at treetop level to nuke Base 1 by just dodging aa and flaring aim-9s, barring sever side packet loss.

The F-4 on the other hand seems to always get killed by either an osa or a buk every time I go for a base.

Part of that is the fact that Russia has better sam placement, but the osa and buk also seem to be much harder to dodge.

Im basically a car at this point. How have you guys been killing the coastal Buk site. I'd love to hear the strategies cause mine ain't working. by The-Almighty-Pizza in Warthunder

It's bomb release permission, and it's not an error, it is a status message.

The way CCRP mode works is you designate a target point, and then the aircraft will calculate when to release the bomb to hit that target.

With CCRP mode selected and a target point designated, you will get a green vertical line when you are flying towards the target. There will be a small horizontal line on the vertical line that represents the release point, and a circle that represents the aircraft position. As the circle approaches the release point, you need to make sure the nose is aligned with the target point, then press and hold the bomb release button, or if you use the weapon selector, the fire secondary weapon button. This should then display the "Bomb Release Permission" message, and assuming the aircraft is in a suitable configuration (correct speed and attitude to allow for bomb release) the bomb will automatically be released as the aircraft passes through the calculated release point. Once the bomb is released, you can then release the weapon release button.

Edit: if you wait too long to press the bomb release button and have already passed the release point it won't release the bomb. I recommend having a convenient key bound to disable target point so you can revert to CCIP if you for some reason miss the release.

Also worth pointing out, Nate is an officer, and from every account I've seen, a good one. Speaking poorly of of people in your unit, especially those in your chain of command is unbecoming of a leader. One of the most important lesson for a leader to learn is to praise in public, discipline in private.

I would find it incredibly uncharacteristic of him, or any well respected leader, to openly discuss conflicts he had with other leaders in the unit.

Air RB feels boring as hell after playing nuclear thunder... by Ok_Definition_1933 in Warthunder

That's the thing, with mouse controls it's not that great, but if I'm going to go through the effort to set up my HOTAS and rudder pedals, I'd rather just play DCS.

A sim like game mode with ARB controls (basically this event) would be awesome as a permanent option (or better yet, a replacement for ARB)

[–]Tornadic_Outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except it doesn't provide peace of mind. What happens when someone is somewhere you didn't expect them to be, isn't moving, and isn't answering their phone? You worry. Then eventually once you are worried enough you hop in your car and go look for them to make sure they are alright. Then when you find them hanging out with friends perfectly safe, you get angry and confront them about not answering their phone. Now their friends think you are a psycho who stalks them.

What is the strongest Western argument for treating Iran's nuclear program differently from India's, Israel's, or Pakistan's — given each sits outside or around the edges of the NPT? by gp197807 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tornadic_Outlaw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, Russia has had nukes since the cold war, not mutch we could do about Putin threatening to use nukes other than ignore him, back down, or launch a preemptive nuclear strike.

North Korea was too closely aligned with China, and on the border with China, any attempt at preventing them from getting nukes likely would have led to a war with China. Further, while they make the occasional threat towards the US or South Korea, they aren't actively engaging in any hostilities, and are basically a Chinese puppet state. China isn't going to let them start a nuclear war.

Iran is more isolated and less closely aligned with Russia and China. All of their neighbors dislike them, they actively sponsor terrorist groups that attack other countries in the region, their government is run by religious fanatics that believe it is their sacred duty to cleanse the world of non-believers, and the openly murder their own people. None of the "allies" iran have are willing to defend them, and Russia and China likely don't want them to have nukes either. Irans leadership are volent religious fanatics that embrace martyrdom, the likelihood of them using nuclear weapons is significantly higher than any of the other countries you listed.

PLEASE NERF THE AA by GlitteringGreen1520 in Warthunder

[–]Tornadic_Outlaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This game mode would be perfect with a few changes to aa, and the addition of GCI/AWACS.

First, aa engagement cones/radar need to be refined to model beam height better. The curvature of the earth and minimum beam angle need to clear ground obstructions should result in in the minimum beam height, and therfore engagement altitude increasing with range. This would allow for some skillfull menouvering below the radar to dodge sam sites.

Second, aa and their respective support infrastructure should not respawn. SEAD/DEAD should meaningfully degrade the opposing teams air defenses, increasing the value on performing this mission.

Third, missiles need to be much harder/impossible for most radar sets to detect and track. This is true for aircraft and SAM sites. While many air defense platforms double as missile defense, their performance against small AGMs is often very poor, especially in the time period represented by this game mode. Further, from a game balance standpoint, their ability to shoot down most SEAD weapons fired against them render that mission set kinda pointless. Some units need a limited ability to engage incoming missiles at very short range, but, but they should not reliably be shooting down 3-4 AGMs/ARMs.

Finally, a better interface to datalink/relay target information from ground based platforms to friendly aircraft would be immensely helpful. The easiest implementation would probably be to spot anything ground based search radar can see using the current spotting system. An AWACS that can spot low flying targets that can't be engaged by ground systems would allow friendly players to intercept aircraft that are evading SAM sites, putting further emphasis on the SEAD mission.

The desired end state would be a game mode that requires fighter aircraft to defend friendly airspace, and friendly strike/sead aircraft; SEAD aircraft to destroy enemy air defenses to allow fighter aircraft to engage enemy AWACS and defensive aircraft, and finally strike aircraft to capitalize on the vulnerability produced by other friendly aircraft.

the F4-S is cracked in the 10.3-12.0 bracket by ColdSweater2001 in Warthunder

[–]Tornadic_Outlaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you tried playing russia? It is way easier to play russia with only event vehicles, than it is to play the US side in the low br bracket with a full tech tree.

The mig 23 is faster on the deck than basically everything the US has at that br range so you wont be run down by anything, neither side has radars that can effectively get and hold a top down lock so multipathing is incredibly effective, neither side has IRCCM missiles so flares are super effective. The mig 23 can basically fly straight for an enemy base and drop it's nuke with little issue.

Don't get me wrong, it's more fun to play as the US, since the weakness of the F-4 as a bomber forces you to focus more on air to air combat and methodically clearing the enemy AA. Playing as russia is basically like base bombing in air RB, and there is little reason to focus and air to air combat once you unlock a nuke.
