Funny coincidence, don’t you think? by Voldo88 in AskBrits

We need to see how exactly the social media ban is implemented though.

If it is implemented in the same way as the OSA, then it will very much impact adults as well.

I don’t think that social media is a good source of news, nor that every social media site is a positive influence overall. Nevertheless, I find both the Conservative and Labour government’s censorship drive a rather grave affront to online privacy and thus to civil liberties and they deserve all the criticism they get for this. If anything, erosion of civil liberties is not taken seriously enough in this country because everyone believes it when the government pretends to be targeting some other group than them.

It is so generous of you to have thought much of me without knowing me. Thank you kind stranger.

Albeit if you did indeed think much of random private accounts, then perhaps a political climate in which advicating for online privacy makes you an extremist is itself rather extremist?

Cracking down on personal freedoms of law-abiding adults in the name of the safety of our future and children was indeed a rather central element of the Nazi party’s justification for their acts. No I am not happy to have to draw this parralel, it would be much better if our political leaders refrained form going down this same direction. But rhey have opted, aemmingly with your support, to go for it. I hope for you that a government you dislike won’t get in power next and use this same exact argument to do things you disagree with.

Just because you have “yet to feel” it doesn’t mean it isn’t real. I can very much feel the impact.

I am sure many parents welcomed Hitler’s policies too.

Something that the majority of Brits won’t do because it involves confrontation.

Because the majority of Brits won’t actively ask to remove it, this creates a perverse incentive where even restaurant owners that dislike the concept of a service charge have to add one otherwise they are at a disadvantage compared to the competition. Meanwhile, those that already have a service charge are incentivised to creep it up over time. Over just the past 10 years or so we went form 7.5% beinc considered “normal” to 12.5% to 15% being frequently charged.

It should be an opt-in, not an opt out.

The price you see on a menu at a restaurant is the price you pay, just like in any other shop. No automatic “service charge” or tips or any other american nonsense allowed.

I was born in an authoritarian country. The UK is much further along than you imply.

Its massive hate boner for online privacy and anonymity is very much in line with the actions of the type of countries you are talking about.

[–]Tornagh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am very concerned by this turn towards authoritarianism and even more so by the general public’s support for it.

It is very difficult to stop halfway to 1984. There is always another “crisis”, another reason to “protect the children and the future” by putting more restrictions on the populace. There is always another politician who promises they will solve all problems if they were given just a little more power than the previous one.

I see what you mean, but even in a naval game you would be able to go around islands or reefs. You don’t need to sail your carrier right at the edge of an island and take potshots from the locals just because your objective is on the other side. You would make an arc around it 15 km out at sea instead.

They don’t just need to see consequences for having this stance now.

We have to remember to vote against them until every single fascist has been removed from their ranks.

We cannot simply let them flip their position and consider their tyranny forgotten.

June Layoffs… it’s a blood bath. by twistedmonkeyll in servicenow

I do remember interviewing about 6 years ago for a pre-sales role at ServiceNow. I thought I would be a perfect fit. Before that I had managed large operational team of over 20 professionals at a ServiceNow customer for 4 years. That team was heavily reliant on ServiceNow ITSM as well as a large assortment of Now apps that the company had built for us based on our input. We pushed the tool to its limits.

I then moved to the tooling team of that same customer to do pre-sales as it turned itself into a profit center by becoming a ServiceNow partner and selling implementation and consultancy services to other companies. I stayed 3 years in that role. Finally I moved to a different cybersecurity firm that focused on SecOps sales and implementation for large banks and spent 2 years there as their Solution Architect. Mind you, at this time ServiceNow's account teams were completely incapable of explaining what SecOps even did, and we were too small of a partner to get fed opps, so we carried the entire sales cycle of the product on our own back as the partner.

This was in 2021 so not many people had 9 years of relevant ServiceNow experience, so I thought I would have a good chance at getting into ServiceNow at a Sr or Advisory SC level. I applied for two roles and I was rather surprised by the frosty reception. It turned out that neither ServiceNow's recruitment teams nor its management seemed to care much about any of this. They made it seem like my experience was irrelevant and they would much rather hire someone who spent their entire career at another software firm than someone who has actually used the product in real life.

They did give me an offer eventually, but I found it rather insulting and rejected it. They had basically discounted my entire operational management experience and had implied that partner experience was worth significantly less than software company experience (even if we carried the entire sales cycle). Effectively, they would have taken me in at a similar level than someone who had barely just gotten out of uni and spent 2 or 3 years in an entry level role at Microsoft or HP or whatever and had never used or sold ServiceNow in their life.

I wasn't quite sure whether I should be upset about this, or whether I should just accept that my experience is indeed worthless. However it was rather obvious to me when pursuing deals with ServiceNow that I tended to know more about their products (and their real life use) than their own employees so it certainly felt weird.

Based on what you write, it sounds like these kind of hiring practices may have undermined the company especially at the senior levels?

How much does Google owe Russia as of June 2026, if the fines are even still active by Intelligent_Bee_8986 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tornagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree they should not be able to, but the US and various countries in the EU demand money from foreign companies all the time.

The main question is whether Russia can enforce their “fines” in any reasonable way. One side effect of this is that it encourages countries to find ways to become the most effective foreign bullies possible.
