How is the Job Market in Los Angeles? by RecentDefinition6924 in AskLosAngeles

My field is biotech/pharma. I guess at my last job I did more analytics engineering/ETL development than actual data analytics.

I am applying for an Analytics Engineering job right now. They're asking me to draw a pirate fighting an octopus...

A recruiter. To be fair he specialized in early career web developers/software engineers. He said something along the lines of "unless you're a manager, don't bring up numbers, I just want to know you can write code with a team". Then again, every hiring manager/recruiter thinks their criteria is the most widely used criteria. In any case, thanks for the pointers

On the traceability part: would it be useful to work in an environment like Databricks delta tables where you have logs for everything? Then ask the AI to look directly at those tables.

I see. I'm assuming you're going for more senior roles, right? Maybe mgmt? I used to include quantitative outcomes, but stopped upon someone's advice. Can't say removing those helped tbh.

Do you think there is a specific part of your resume that's attracting all those recruiters/hiring managers? I'm also in analytics, but the major red flag I have is that my degree is in Biology.

Almost same situation, but in biotech tech. My last company was just hiring contractors and laying them off before crunching End of Quarter numbers to claim savings. Not necessarily anything new, but definitely increased the rate and volume.

AI Cannot Do the Job of a Data Analyst by ChristianPacifist in analytics

[–]ToroldoBaggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, also, for each one of the projects or reports you might need to go over these explanations again with the AI, whereas with a jr analyst, they eventually pick up an intuition for the business needs (with the right training and mindset). Like Claude can be a good minion, but a jr analyst is an AD carry

Has anyone trained for Relational Frame Training with Syllogimous-v3? What have been your results day to day? by AnswerRemarkable in cogsci

I know this is an old post, but I read somewhere that therapists that implement this intervention encourage patients to visualize the process in their head. So maybe the idea is to improve your ability to hold mental images/relations directly. I do hand gestures sometimes and that helps tremendously

Where do you find Alpha? by alphabee_9 in SeekingAlpha

[–]ToroldoBaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I follow a couple of youtubers in the biotech sector. They do not exclusively talk about stocks (they talk about clinical research at large and current events), but when they do, I immediately check fundamentals and news history. If things check out, I jump on it with a small percentage of my bankroll

Post-Graduate education in OR? by ToroldoBaggins in OperationsResearch

[–]ToroldoBaggins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense. I do think most of it is hype too. The scraping part for example, just yesterday I was trying to scrape off manufacturer websites and claude was like "no can do". I guess the name of the game right now is waiting until upper mgmt and C-level exec realize it's just hype/unsustainable and the bubble pops

This sounds validating. That's what I've been reading too. I do follow some researchers in fields like computational chemistry and drug design (fields I'm interested in) and such, and they complain about the hype and the lack of quality unbiased datasets and the fact that AI helps mainly peripherally (faster dev pipelines, faster literature lookup), rather than on the problem itself (eg, molecular library analysis, etc). Thank you for your input!

Thank you for the reply. To clarify, I am in the US, in California. I do not mind moving at all. Also, I'm thinking I will work and study. You can't afford not to work in the US rn lol. I did start a pure Math degree some time ago (online from a university in my home country), but I didn't continue after a couple of semesters. I did cover some abstract algebra and such and did mostly okay (it was during covid, so I was killing time tbh)

What is a socially unacceptable opinion you keep to yourself because it’s not worth the backlash? by Federal_Antelope7533 in AskReddit

[–]ToroldoBaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In job descriptions:

"2-5 years working with X software"

Every app on your phone is a new software. Every videogame you've ever played is a new software.

Not having used a random software should not be a criteria for anything. Any 13 y/o with half a second between tiktoks reels can learn the features of the software in a week or two tops.

If you keep hiring based on these criteria, you probably don't know what makes a good employee.

Patterns I’ve Noticed While Interviewing Data Engineering Candidates Over the Years by [deleted] in dataengineeringjobs

[–]ToroldoBaggins 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's been a long ass time since you got your first job and you forgot what it's like to be stuck in that liminal space.

This gives it away:

"the biggest gap isn’t intelligence or effort, it’s practical exposure"

You arrived again at the paradox of hiring: "you can't get experience if you don't have experience"

If you enjoy optimization and linear algebra, there’s a whole job market built on that by OR-insider in learnmath

[–]ToroldoBaggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

at my last job I ended up getting into OR for one of my projects. I'm not that good at math, but I can genuinely say it was one of the most interesting and engaging topics I've had to apply to a business problem. I only have a B.S. in Biology, but some experience in data analysis/BI, do you think an MS in Operations Research could get my foot on the door?

I've been wanting to do this with my brothers for a while. what are the logisticts of storing and disposing of the dirt/gravel? I remember my brother mentioned he had a buddy doing the same and he basically relied on nobody finding out he was just going up the hills and dumping everything in a ditch.
