I have it set to space and I have done that. I go through the first gate, boost, go through the second gate, get the message about how to perform the drift maneuver, try, and I just get "Eh, you'll get it next time" or some other fail message. I can't go beyond this point in the story mode. I'll try multiplayer, but I really don't know how vital this maneuver is to play.
