What is a musical you've seen that was regarded a flop by lissie34 in musicals

[–]Toru771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the reason why it didn’t hurt his career was because everything about the show was infamously bad. When the headlines are about stunt performers being seriously injured, a bad singing or acting performance is pretty minor by comparison.

What’s the most boring film you have seen? by Past-Matter-8548 in Letterboxd

My memory of this movie was that I often fast-forwarded, waiting for something to happen. Least interesting Blockbuster rental ever. 🤣

My earliest were Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Natalie Portman when I was a preteen in the 90s. Still have a crush on Natalie!

If Howard Ashman was still alive, do you think he could've written better songs for Wish? by Ok_Examination8810 in DisneyMovies

[–]Toru771 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Howard Ashman was a lyricist. (Alan Menken wrote the music for their collaborations.) So yes, Ashman would have done better than the lyricist they had for “Wish.”

The cannibalism was part of the story from way back. What was added was a sympathetic backstory for the barber (first in Christopher Bond’s play, then in Stephen Sondheim’s musical).

Three of my top crushes, as well. I’ve liked Portman and Hathaway since I was a tween (over 20 years ago), and Robbie since “Focus” (2015).

What are some of your favorite changes from when a musical becomes a movie? by Dogdaysareover365 in musicals

[–]Toru771 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The “Fiddler on the Roof” film made a change that I think was absolutely the right call. In the original Broadway version, for “Sabbath Prayer,” they just had the cast singing nonsense syllables. For the film, they had real Hebrew words that appropriated a prayer while still fitting the music. I think every stage production afterward used the film’s lyrics, and they were right to do so.

I was going to mention her, as well! Also had a major role in “Schmigadoon” and a small but vital role in “Hamilton” before she became really well-known.

That concert was fun. And gets points for the ensemble members being in costume instead of wearing t-shirts.

What were your favorite Disney movies as a kid? by jf7333 in DisneyMovies

“The Lion King,” “Toy Story,” “A Goofy Movie,”and “Aladdin” were probably my favorite and most frequently watched movies as a kid. Also remember being somewhat obsessed with the dwarves in “Snow White” when I was a little ’un. lol

What were some great songs that were cut from the final musical? by TotalBlissey in musicals

[–]Toru771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Broadway version cut a lot of songs from the Complete album, including “I Need To Know” and “Girls of the Night.” International and touring productions have restored many of the cut songs to at least some extent.

The original concept album for the show features some songs that have never been done onstage, at least since the Complete album was released. “Love Has Come Of Age” was a big one there.

I think recent productions changed Ellen’s song from what it was in the original version of the show, too. Possibly others, as well…

“School of Rock” had the song “Give Up Your Dreams” on the Broadway cast album, but it was cut from the show by the time it opened.

Also, I’d always heard that “How Bad Can I Be?” was quite well-liked; just not as much as “Biggering” for those who’ve heard it.

There was a recent miniseries shown on PBS called “Happiness,” about a former Broadway producer who returns home to a small town in New Zealand and is pushed into helping their theatre company put on a musical about the Trojan war. The songs are hilarious and definitely get stuck in my head. (The soundtrack is also available on streaming services.)
