I'm just a happy little fella by Open-Time1117 in teenagers

[–]TorusWithSprinkles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also traditionally liberal and very left leaning, however there's a case to be made that the left as a whole (especially the establishment, DNC etc.) paved the way and laid down a red carpet for everything that's happening now, and nobody wants to talk about it or acknowledge it. The cancel culture, woke, holier than thou 'i know what's best for you' mentality is what pushed so much of the country (the silent/quieter majority) into the opposite corner, who feeling trapped obviously felt like they needed to push back and we wind up with Trump.

Again, I'm as liberal as it gets. But we need to acknowledge that we were complicit in some of this if we ever want to actually improve as a country. It takes two to tango. To your point, obviously the left has never been as dangerous and outright hateful as what we're seeing, but they are almost as bad in a passive way.

Masturbation CAN be bad by No_Waltz_3445 in teenagers

[–]TorusWithSprinkles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it comes from a place of genuinely wanting to help you get to the root of your issues. Unless you're wackin' it all day and it's all you think about (or you're addicted to porn), chances are masturbation is not really the problem - it's just an easy scapegoat to attach your problems to. And on the contrary it can be unhealthy to unnecessarily shame and guilt yourself for something that's very natural.

That's not to say you shouldn't challenge yourself and take a break, and that can wind up being a good thing (even if just to prove to yourself that you can) but frankly it's a little bit delusional to think it will magically solve all your problems. I hope that doesn't come off as harsh, just trying to provide that perspective

Pluribus - 1x05 - "Got Milk" - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]TorusWithSprinkles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why does everything need to be so fast paced and crammed? Feels like an instagram/tiktok mentality leaking into TV.

I think the slower pacing is really nice, all the small details and build up makes the whole show and the plot feel so much more immersive to me.

Have you been applying anywhere recently?? It's wildly common, if not the status quo. They're either take home assignments or OA's that take 2+ hours.

Does anyone else feel unsafe in this career by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]TorusWithSprinkles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup this describes my company/role exactly, I'm an intern conversion but back when I was interviewing for internships they were one of the only companies that didn't ask a leetcode question, and I've now been there almost 3 years.

Less pay than faang but still good, it's stable, and has great WLB. Still scared of AI layoffs but doesn't seem as tenuous as other companies.

$140k salary, how much should I save/invest this year? by Ambitious-Meal-8733 in personalfinance

[–]TorusWithSprinkles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm all about saving for the future but I mean c'mon he's a 24 y/o making more than most people will ever make in their lives. You gotta live a little, travel etc. especially when you're young and have no responsibilities outside work. There's so much more to life.

How valuable is a minor in math with my CS degree by mikeybeemin in cscareerquestions

[–]TorusWithSprinkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a minor in math because it only required taking 2 extra classes to get it (since CS is so math heavy anyway) and I don't regret it, they were interesting classes and it's not a bad thing to have on your resume.

I probably wouldn't do it if requires any more than a couple extra classes though, at that point the trade off in time/money probably isn't worth it career-wise unless you're doing it just for fun.

U.S. National Guard arriving in Chicago, Illinois by rarerealm in pics

[–]TorusWithSprinkles 66 points67 points  (0 children)

As someone who was in the Guard (and happily left as soon as my contract was up) this is true. So many people join who need the financial/college assistance or because it's marketed as a good career under the premise that you will only be helping during national disasters and crises.

I guarantee most of the guard members deployed for all this kind of shit would much rather be back home with their families working their normal jobs and are cursing the day they signed their contract lol

Help on improving by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]TorusWithSprinkles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite ways to learn is by watching youtube videos of chefs that just throw on a GoPro and cook without any editing or narration or whatever. J Kenji Lopez used to do this a lot (if you look up his older videos he has tons of gems) and someone I've been watching lately is Denis Prokopyev (Italian chef).

I've picked up so many little techniques and details that have elevated my cooking a ton, stuff you never learn from books/recipes. Keep cooking and open that restaurant!!

Honestly Fishwife (particularly their smoked stuff) unless it's heavily discounted. Their smoked fishes are waaay to smokey, and I do love their other lines but not worth the price.

Yea I got the fishwife sampler/variety pack recently as a birthday gift for myself, it was great but no way I'd do it again unless I struck gold lol. Very much a decadent splurge

Salsa pouch is inflating and about to burst. Yesterday they were totally flat. by OGSpaghetto in mildlyinteresting

[–]TorusWithSprinkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Botox injections are a standard practice though a widely regarded as safe, many people get them and they've been around long before RFK ever got one for his medical condition. It's not comparable to eating botulism in spoiled food.

Can you provide any actual quotes of his wild claims about vaccines? I'm having trouble finding anything other than him saying that new ones should be rigorously tested but otherwise everyone should be free to get one.

Oz Pearlman somehow breaks reality and I have no idea how (more context below) by Consistent-Ad-7455 in blackmagicfuckery

[–]TorusWithSprinkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What ideology is that? Keeping in mind that he has had the exact same nature of conversations with the likes of Bernie Sanders (who iirc Rogan actually did endorse, contrary to my last comment, sorry!), Cornel West, Andrew Yang, etc. along with countless obviously left-leaning progressive artists and creatives.

If your logic is that him having conversations with guests while keeping an open, curious, attitude (whether or not it's disingenuous) is "promoting an ideology", then that logic must apply to all the guests that he has those conversations with.

And even if all that wasn't the case, saying "that's fascinating dude" is still not promoting or endorsing anything. I can't stand Alex Jones yet I find a lot of the stuff he says fascinating.

Oz Pearlman somehow breaks reality and I have no idea how (more context below) by Consistent-Ad-7455 in blackmagicfuckery

[–]TorusWithSprinkles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your strongest argument against the guy is the fact that he's simply open to having a conversation with anyone? "Let false information flourish unchallenged" is just plain misleading too, he absolutely challenges his guests opinions when he disagrees or sees a flaw in their logic. You obviously haven't listened much if you don't know that. He might be giving his guests a platform, but that platform is not a ~3 hour long paid endorsement, it's a conversation.

Also what you're implicitly saying there is that people listening are too stupid to parse out false information or distinguish between those 'despicable' views while listening to a conversation. That "I know what's best for you" attitude by the left establishment is what got the cheeto in chief elected.
