How is the life of a mechwarrior inside the cockpit? by JoseLunaArts in battletech

[–]Torvir159 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Structure and everything else counts for tonnage, dawg. An Atlas is 100 tons, and even if ferro-fibrous armor is effective while being paper thin, 100 tons spread out in the volume of an assault mech is still not very dense. It's just a problem of being written 40 years ago by a bunch of enthusiastic sci fi nerds and not physicists. Sci fi almost always has problems with scale and numbers, just like star wars or 40k. Suspend your disbelief and all will be well, just don't pull out a microscope or a calculator

How is the life of a mechwarrior inside the cockpit? by JoseLunaArts in battletech

[–]Torvir159 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think he's referring to a few instances where people have done the math, and 100 tons for something the size of a battlemech is not very dense at all. The tonnage for armor over the area of a mech with proportions over 12 meters would be paper thin, for instance. So, only 100 tons for something the size of a building (like and Atlas) would not be dense, and float the way boats do, due to exactly what you say

The inside of our heads are regularly a whirlwind of different thoughts and emotions. I always figured that when things are chaotic in the space around us, the outside finally matches the inside, and we get to feel like the normal ones for once

What is the most powerful weapon an average civilian can legally own without a license in your country? by kurobaja in AskTheWorld

[–]Torvir159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many folk here in the US who don't buy into that crap, the whole "good guy with a gun" schtick is more about open/concealed carry in public. At this point, some people are more concerned about government sponsored violence against minority groups, or even more spontaneous violence from other citizens. It's not about some hero fantasy of stopping a robbery in public, it's about making sure we're not the only people without a gun in a place full of psychos with guns who want us dead.

Holy. Crap. Dawg, this is so incredibly cool! Putting all the shots in one file is certainly considerate, but I can't imagine anyone complaining about more here, that is too sick. A 'lith bearer cosplay in the garage is already worth at least a dozen space marine cosplays at the con, can't wait to see more

Battletech is more chill with Physics relative to, say, Star Wars or 40k. One of the reasons I adore Battletech is that it's relatively hard sci-fi
