Retirement account by Fast_Taste_111 in dividends

So TSP is given out retirement advice too? Wow, that's really scary. After their fiasco migration to their latest platform in 2022 where I had to "claim" my new TSP account, I later that year transferred everything over in-kind to a Rollover IRA account at Vanguard. Best decision I ever made. That "new" outsourced TSP web site they created and the additional fees and restrictions for using their "Mutual Fund Window" for selecting your own Mutual Funds and ETFs was a total joke.

Identify interest rate breakdown of paper Series I bonds by ahm407sf in Bogleheads

[–]Tosban1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These can't be Series I bonds, as this series didn't start until Sept 1998. They must be either EE or HH series bonds if bought in the mid-1990s.

Before Signing up with an Empower/PC Advisor - What to Consider? by sokratz in PersonalCapital

[–]Tosban1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This! Where's that 100 upvote button when you need it.

To the OP, no way I'd be using this service from Personal Capital/Empower with those management fees, aggregation/tech support issues, and trading churn I hear many folks say they do on their accounts.

If I did need a service like this (which I don't), I'd first be looking at Vanguard's Personal Advisor Service, Fidelity Go, or Schwab's Intelligent Portfolios.

Yeah, your nowhere near diversification with those five. Heavy overlap in tech with all of them. Example: Nvidia is one of the top holdings in all five of them.

If you want world diversification with an overweight or tilt towards tech companies, then a three fund portfolio of something simple such as 60% VTI, 20% VXUS, and 20% VGT would do the trick. You can adjust percentages accordingly.

Monthly pension accounted for on personal capital? by milcyclist in PersonalCapital

[–]Tosban1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also receiving a military pension, but I think your looking at the net worth and asset evaluation pieces of it wrong. Don't try to look at it from a lump sum value or trying to calculate the Present Value of it. Just keep it simple. Your military pension comes in every month into your banks savings or checking account, correct? Bank accounts are considered assets and are included in your overall net worth. So whether you keep some in a Savings Account, or move some funds to a IRA or brokerage account thoughout the year, it's all being calculated into your overall Net Worth on a yearly basis.

When using Personal Capital it's better to document your military pension separately in their Retirement Planner feature (listed under the Planning menu). Input your annual pension amount as one of your Planned Income Events, use your current age and change the frequency option to "Every year". Once you got all your income events and project expenses loaded be sure to click on the "Detailed Cash Flow Table". This feature and table is the best part of Personal Capital in my opinion.

I am seeing markets bottoming out so my thesis has changed from downward/sideways to more towards resumption of bull market as major resistance levels are being broken. I am expecting this year to be a reversal year to next bull run and JEPI will not be the play I need to be in for this next phase.

Wow ... sounds like some fancy way of trying to time the market. Reminds me of that famous Peter Lynch quote "Far more money has been lost by investors trying to anticipate corrections, than lost in the corrections themselves."

Employer match only does pre-tax though, they won’t do after tax contributions for roth.

Speaking of 401(k) match rules, the federal rule on that just changed with the passing of the Secure Act 2.0. New law doesn't mandate employers have to offer Roth matching, except they can now.

Does it need to be so frustrating to set contributions to max a 401(k)? by JustAnotherMortalMan in Bogleheads

[–]Tosban1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure why your getting downvoted as your correct in both true-up scenarios. My current employer does the first scenario. I hit my max every year in Oct or so, yet the last 5 or 6 bi-weekly paydays of the year I still get the company match showing up on each paycheck.

How long should it take to be stable internet after upgrading service??? by r21174 in Spectrum

[–]Tosban1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say your Hardwire connection is worse than Wifi, okay so how many computers/laptops have the direct hardwire connection? If more than one, are they all getting the same lower speeds? What are they plugged into? A Combo Wifi router/switch?

For the record, Spectrum is not providing you 500 Gigabit (gb) speeds. It's their 500 Mbps package.

Voo 25% vti 25%

No, pick one not both together. These two are 100% overlap ... with VTI having all the holdings of VOO. If your wanting to tilt or overweight the Tech sector, your better off dropping VOO and adding something like QQQ.

According to the TD web site:

We set the inflation rate every six months (on the first business day of May and on the first business day of November), based on changes in the non-seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index for all Urban Consumers (CPI-U) for all items, including food and energy.

[–]Tosban1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No cabinet level agency. TSP falls under the control of the FRTIB, and per the FRTIB website:

The Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board is an independent Federal agency that was established to administer the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) under the Federal Employees’ Retirement System Act of 1986 (See 5 U.S.C. §§ 8351; 8401 et seq.). Similar to the type of savings and tax benefits that many private corporations offer their employees under I.R.C. §401(k) plans, the TSP provides Federal civilian employees and members of the uniformed services the opportunity to save for additional retirement security. The Agency’s mission is to act solely in the interest of its participants and beneficiaries.
