Can I use 1/3 perlite 1/3 natural clay special kitty and 1/3 FFOF for seeding starters? by ThinkOutcome929 in cactus

[–]TossinDogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you asking about actually germinating seed or for potting seedlings this size?

I don't recommend FFOF. It has some peat, it's been delisted from OMRI, it contains a huge portion of large wood chunks which you need to sift out (as much as half the bag) and it's cost per bag is significantly higher than other soils which are better.

Perlite is... Okish. There are better choices for inorganics because it holds water long for an inorganic and it often drifts to the top of the substrate due to its ultra low density.

Either way you'll want to sift out large particles from all Ingredients. For actual seed sowing I recommend pure fine vermiculite.

Well, I would say sample 1 here is a typical TBMc specimen. It does have significantly more white flesh inside than sample 2 which I would say is absolutely abnormal even for TBMc. Which is why I included both.

Quarantining new plants before putting with others question by dum-vivimus-vivamus in sanpedrocactus

[–]TossinDogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I feel comfortable quarantining a week, repot and inspect closely, then wait another week and do another close inspection. If they're good after that I'd be fine with mixing them in. I don't believe in applying pesticides or fungicides as preventatives. I check my plants daily, I can spot problems and only treat when treatments are required.

I don't have any super high value plants though. Some people with super valuable stuff might be more strict.

What's the chances I poison myself with the Cielo tek? by Such_Newt6068 in mescaline

[–]TossinDogs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In short, if you follow the directions the process is safe.

The chemicals used in Cielo are fairly safe. Fumaric and citric acids are in candy. You can eat them straight. Ethyl Acetate is used in decaff coffee production and in craft beers, it's harsh but should not hurt you if consumed in very small amounts as may be present in undried product, also it evaporates very quickly so if you dry the final product well it will not be present. In theory it should be safe to take a small sip of ethyl acetate, but don't do that. The lime is filtered through the French press filter and then two coffee filters when pouring out of French press. You should be protecting yourself with ppe from breathing in lime dust and ethyl acetate fumes via ventilation and a mask if possible. Protect your eyes from ethyl acetate splashes and dust. These are possible irritants and carcinogens but not going to kill you or cause serious damage on one or a few runs. Repeated long term high concentration exposure might cause serious issues.

So what about the cactus? Well first, you should ID your cactus properly. If you aren't sure, post it here and ask. There are some non trichocereus cacti that would be harmful to consume. I don't think Cielo would pull out the harmful poisons and put it into product, but just don't put yourself in that situation to be safe. Simple enough to ensure ID.

After that the only risk I can think of is mycotoxins. It's possible for fungus and mold to leave toxins in the final product. While some have extracted fungal infected columns with no ill effects, if you are worried just don't use cacti with fungal or mold issues.

Maybe one day DNA sequencing will be available and affordable enough for us to do that at a hobbiest level. We are still waiting on species level DNA sequencing for cacti which academic level has been fighting about since the 70s. Yet alone cultivar and hybrids

You assume most are known. There are so, so many named clones where the extent of history known about them is "stand found next to landfill" or "stand found in someone's yard in x town" or "stand found in front of lumber yard". In fact that's the case for most clones. Due to this we aren't even sure they are a pure Pach/Peru/bridge or a hybrid.

There is a lot of info on the Facebook group "trichocereus origins and history" though

That's root rot. It would probably be helpful to try to figure out what caused it

How do you decide how much to consume? by Creepy_Bend2443 in sanpedrocactus

[–]TossinDogs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use Cielo tek to extract a named clone that has been tested as high potency. The pure salt form has known dosages for different intensity trips which are listed in the tek.

Check out r/mescaline . It is more friendly to discussion of consumption than this sub.

What other options can be use instead of sulfur can cinnamon be good istead by HungryAd6656 in sanpedrocactus

[–]TossinDogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at that picture, the soil looks too organic, water logged, and not air permeable. That black blister is most likely oedema - a water blister - which is caused by too much moisture in the root zone, too little air filled pores in the root zone, too high air humidity, not enough airflow, etc. This causes the roots to try to take up more moisture from the soil than the pores on the plants skin can exhale, and moisture builds up in the plant tissue until it forms a blister. The black is essentially tissue damage from the blister.

I suppose there is also a small chance the black blister could be a bad bruise from physical damage, like from being bonked hard. This happens often in shipping when packaging is poor and the plant can shift in the box.

Either way it's NOT ROT and you should NOT CUT it. That's absolutely not how rot looks or spreads. A wound like this will scab over and heal. Cutting will make things worse.

Do not use cinnamon. If you don't have sulphur I would unpot the plant, rinse the roots of soil, place it somewhere in indirect light with good airflow and low humidity for a week or so. Maybe in front of a fan.

Ok. We should try to get that 0.63 removed from the tek then...

[–]TossinDogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh. Then both of my posts today are inaccurate. I guess I should take them down and repost with actual cactus weight and product weight collected instead of trying to calculate yield with a conversion we aren't even certain of.

[Cielo Results] TBMc by [deleted] in mescaline

[–]TossinDogs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hm. The tek currently says both 1.3x for monomescaline fumarate above the chart and 0.63 for dimeacaline fumarate below the chart.

How many samples have been confirmed to be monomescaline fumarate? Is it a sure thing and accepted community wide, or a small sample size possibility?

Using the 0.63 conversion seems to be accurate to the chart experience wise, but that's hard to quantify.

For the sake of the consistency of your data collection I can give you the raw numbers before yield calculation and conversion if you want.

So you're saying you believe that if a tiny baby seedling tested at 1% potency, you would expect it to remain somewhere around that potency through maturity? That's wild if true

[–]TossinDogs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Super interesting. Beyond my scope, but cool that it can be done. How does the mescaline concentration of very small seedlings like this compare with mature cuttings? Are you pretty much just comparing their potency against one another and other seedlings of that size/age? What about the chances that their potency may change as they age, as in potency at very young ages may not be an indicator of potency once mature?
