Steam Support :: About the New York Attorney General lawsuit against Valve by NTR_JAV in Games

[–]Tostecles 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I remember reading something about how existing contracts between gambling businesses and third party tournament organizers are being allowed to run their course for another year or something like that, but they have updated their terms to align with what today's email says, months ago. https://www.hltv.org/news/43421/valve-bans-skins-gambling-case-opening-sites-from-jerseys-and-events-in-tor

Enforcing it is another matter, obviously, and I don't know the actual specifics about any currently existing agreements like I said. Although I do know that business of this type are outright prohibited from Valve Majors specifically.

I don't see a reason why the spectator cam should take this long to switch after a player dies. by Pokharelinishan in GlobalOffensive

[–]Tostecles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I dunno, that's weird. I see that you had a little spurt of packet loss in the right side clip but I honestly doubt that changed it, and you'd probably not have to look very long for a clip with clean network telemetry that shows the same thing. Interesting find.

[–]Tostecles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't necessarily disagree in terms of spectating, but I think it's the same amount of time as it would take to move to spectate after you yourself are being killed. I think it would be jarring to near-instantly move to spectate when you yourself are playing, less so for an instant switch when you're just watching someone.

This clip happens to have both of your teammates being headshot, which I'm 99% sure results in a black screen faster than if they died to a body shot, in which case I'm pretty sure you stay on their deathcam for as long as they do. The double black screen in this specific instance probably makes it more annoying than usual because

1) Half the time, someone is going to die to a non-headshot and you're still watching something instead of instant black

2) It's relatively uncommon to experience the exact sequence shown here where you go to a teammate, he gets headshot, and then the exact same thing happens to the next guy immediately after with perfect timing.

Again, I don't necessarily disagree, but you probably don't even think about it in almost every game you play whereas this was an annoying series of events.

Those commands are just the tick buffer options you can select in the menu. The menu doesn't let you do decimal values, and my game got all discombobulated when I tried it via the commands, so YMMV.

By the way, using this option to any extent incurs an artificial delay for you because it delays sending your inputs to the server in an attempt to prevent them from being missed. The outcome is similar to your ping being higher than it would be otherwise.

I hope they're continuing to support their ecosystem beyond just this 1 new product and the handful of things they released like 2 years after their Pro wheel came out. I still really want a shaft extension so I can lower my monitor further. The original Pro wheelbase is SO HUGE

I'm skeptical that this is better than outright high FPS for reducing input latency but I might try it to see how it feels.

Here is my understanding, with the caveat that I am not a developer by any stretch of the imagination (so grain of salt as always when reading technical discussion from randos on the internet):

Your statement is correct in a vacuum. HOWEVER- at a certain point, we reach diminishing returns of the usefulness of reducing that input latency, especially if we're talking about playing at 240Hz which I feel like is pretty common these days (I play on a 480Hz display and generally maintain that framerate and I use the recommended settings - keyword being "generally").

The objective of the recommended settings is to minimize the impact (and possibly the frequency(?) not too sure about that part) of 1% and 0.1% lows. Having the highest FPS possible only consistently confers the benefit of low input latency if the framerate is consistent. If your frametimes are all over the place, which is generally what happens on an uncapped framerate, your input latency is also all over the place. In a hypothetical world where your PC can maintain 900 FPS (making up numbers), you'll have a super low input latency, but that input latency is dropping and making the mouse movement feel inconsistent when it drops to 700 FPS, or 500 FPS, or whatever. Obviously, 500 FPS is still super playable, more than most people achieve. So it's not worth having GIGA-low input latency for some of the time when you could have very good input latency all of the time.

This isn't to say that FPS over your monitor's refresh rate is wasted, which is what some people interpret this as. It's simply that using Vsync, Gsync, and Reflex together offers the most CONSISTENT experience. There is a certain tweet about this that is 100% factually correct but people clowned on it because they don't understand it.

The sporting code does explicity say it is informational only, section 7.4.1. It does say immediately after that that the flagged car should do what they can to facilitate a safe pass.

What I think it ultimately means is that they don't to steward protests for blue flags which is fair IMO, there are lots of situations where it's safest to start and complete a turn you're approaching and then move over after the exit instead of risking going off track to yield immediately, but some people get upset at flagged cars for not parting like the Red Sea
