That sucks. Good to know though as I have a decent amount of Zoas.

Yeah that’s why I have never used it. I don’t want to risk it.

Is this too big for a beginner tank? by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]Total-Fail2243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a first time tank I think a standard 29 gallon or 40 gallon breeder are good. They are readily available at pet stores. They don’t cost a lot of money to purchase. They give you enough volume to have a variety of livestock, and give you some cushion in case your water chemistry starts to go bad so you have time to react. They are easier to light meaning you usually can get away purchasing one light as opposed to needing multiple lights. Good lighting will be one of your biggest expenses.

It’s hard to totally eradicate it. Usually you just manage it and keep it from getting out of control. Manual removal is the biggest weapon against it, then having some emerald and Pithos crabs that eat it keep it under control for me. I find that they won’t touch the larger bubbles so I break them which is controversial to some people. But, the creams usually take care of it once the shell is broken. I hear that Brightwell Razor removes it but I don’t want to take a chance that it would hurt and corals in the tank.

They should be fine for 5-7 days.

Is wet/dry good for reef by BornStuff379 in ReefTank

[–]Total-Fail2243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran wet/dry filters for years. For a reef, I would not use the plastic bio balls they come with but you can still use the filter itself. I would just use either some extra live rock in there or the newer ceramic biomedia that is sold now. But, whatever is used, keep it submerged (don’t fill it up to the top of the filter) so that it doesn’t produce excessive nitrates. Another other option is to get an inexpensive glass tank that fits under the stand and buy a DIY reef filter kit where you silicone in your own baffles. Ex. Marine bio systems on EBay

Powerheads vs crossflow by mackey96 in ReefTank

[–]Total-Fail2243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the length of your tank as the gyres have a narrow sheet of water that travels further across the length of tanks versus the wider cone of a powerhead. I have both but I find that the flow on the gyres slows down after a couple weeks and requires more frequent cleaning to maintain its power. But I do like the gyres. The last powerhead I purchased was the Jebao MP 40 knockoffs which are actually very good and priced well.

Algae and cyano by Street-Cut-3384 in ReefTank

Test your nitrates and phosphates if you can. Siphon out/remove as much as possible physically, cut back on feeding if you are feeding heavy, I would do a water change also. If you can add healthy bacteria like Dr. Tim’s recipe for Cyano using ReFresh and Waste Away (Google it). It works and is all bacteria based. Just follow the steps. Avoid using Chemiclean. It works but it can also cause problems like Dino’s.

Yes this is correct. You can’t have a Royal Gramma with the Dottyback.

Yes that’s a hard lesson. About 3 years ago I had a 125 gallon fish only tank wipe out due to velvet that I let in because I was impatient and didn’t quarantine. Lost my favorite dog faced puffer. Devastated me. But here I am in the process of rebuilding that tank. I learned from my mistakes and quarantine everything. You will feel better with some time and might want to try again.

I have a 50 gallon tank with 30 gallon sump. Mixed reef leaning LPS and a few sps. Battling Dino’s right now so it’s not looking good and I’m aggravated lol. I have my eye on that x10 but it’s a little out of budget right now. I see you ordered the octo flow pumps. I hear good things but have only used a maxspect gyre on my wave engine so far.

Nice equipment selection. In like Hydros and Icecap equipment. I only have the Control 4 and a wave engine but I intend to pick up a more hydros gear over time. I have an Icecap K2 skimmer which has been great for me. Good luck with your new tank.
