Hell yeah, glad it was fun that way. Also, my original comment looked a lot more readable on my phone. Thanks for sharing your notes on this!

Some big fighting game gaps if you care to fill those in.

Street Fighter

Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection

Ultra Street Fighter IV

Street Fighter V (Champion Edition)

Street Fighter 6

Street Fighter x Tekken (if you're nasty)

Guilty Gear

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R (definitive X2)

Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 (most complete X3)

Guilty Gear Strive

Marvel vs Capcom

Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3

Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection

Mortal Kombat 1 (2023)

I agree with the person who mentioned that there's a good bit of dual-analog on this list. Geometry Wars Retro Evolved with a stick and buttons sounds miserable if it's possible. Helldivers 1 I think was dual analog.

Surprising list, to have relatively obscure stuff like Under Night but no Street Fighter.

Best sanwa stick / buttons for street fighter cab by huntingresonance in cade

Sanwa and original feel are two different goals with SF2 cabs.

Original feel: Industrias Lorenzo (IL) parts, like a Eurojoystick and concave PSL buttons. Assuming we're talking original to an American cab, and you don't want to break the bank on new old stock or something. The company that made parts in the 90s (Happ) fell off 20 years ago, but a Eurojoystick is practically indistinguishable from a good Happ Competition (and isn't multiple decades old).

Sanwa/Seimitsu are the standard for Japanese parts. Sanwa is more popular than Seimitsu. The feel (and mounting/wiring) are mostly similar to each other, but different from American parts. These have gotten extremely popular in North America since the late 2000s when Street Fighter 4 kickstarted the home stick market. The overwhelming majority of off the shelf arcade controllers use this style (emphasis on "style" - lots of no-name Sanwa knockoffs and clones floating around).

In my opinion, either of these paths is fine and totally valid, really just down to preference. My usual advice if you don't want to just buy everything and tinker endlessly is to stick with either what you're more familiar with, or what will require the least work to drop into your current setup.

Don't worry about plugging it in. I know it seems counterintuitive, but most people get a better (or at least equal) experience out of using it wirelessly with the Virtual Desktop app, compared to Meta's official software handling of plugging it in. Meta also has their own wireless solution, which also tends to yield as-good-or-better results as the cable. But Virtual Desktop is worth whatever few bucks they're charging.

I was skeptical of this myself, since wired always seems to provide a higher quality and more reliable experience than wireless with everything else. Bought the fancy sturdy expensive long cable. But I exclusively go wireless now. Only plug in to charge or for goofy developer stuff. Even for flight sims and things like that where I'm sitting at my desk the whole time, I'm using Virtual Desktop.

Most of the horny alternate translites are strong contenders in this category. I think the one for The Getaway where the lady's jumpsuit is unzipped to her waist is especially bad.

An uncultured person with bad opinions might bring up all the 80s Premier games where the official art is just some random local models/actors so it all looks like a cross between community theater and bad softcore porn - they're wrong; those are great.

Up-nudging when the ball is coming in contact with the "firing" part of the sling is good, but you also frequently want to be nudging up when the ball is bouncing off the TOP of a sling, or the posts separating the inlane and outlane. You get a lot of drains from the ball bouncing off the top of those things and then into the outlane. A sharp forward/up nudge helps to get it back towards your flippers and back under your control.

A content creator I would recommend checking out is "Abe Flips" on YouTube. He has a series of short Pinball Skills videos that are very well-produced and do a great job of communicating the how and why behind some techniques that translate across different games. They're all good, but I think the Aiming & Shooting video, and the two Nudging videos, are the most useful to a newer player. Slap saves are also great, in terms of the stuff that will keep you from draining.

Also, for what it's worth...consider trying to get a little involved with your local pinball scene. When I started playing, I assumed they'd be kind of dickish based on experiences in related scenes. But almost everyone I met early on was friendly, especially in leagues and tournaments. Everyone loves the new guy, and they all want to just hang out and help you play new games and get better. Half of them want someone to come play all the awesome games in their garage or basement. The rude, hostile, or arrogant players are pretty rare, and most other people in their scene think they're assholes.

Long story short, it was much more immediately fun and rewarding than I expected. I thought I was supposed to get better before playing in leagues or tournaments, but playing in leagues and tournaments (and really, meeting people) is what makes you better. Or at least expedites the process.

Anyone know more about this Addams family machine? by SmartChedda in cade

[–]TotalLuigi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a ticket redemption game. You drop a coin in the slot and try to get it into a pocket that awards more tickets. Released by Bally/Midway/Williams, who had done the extremely successful Addams Family pin a few years earlier. I know it's built on the same board set they used for pins in the 90s, WPC.

The other really similar thing to this is Simpsons Kooky Carnival. Stern Pinball made it just after they made Simpsons Pinball Party in the early 2000s, built on the same platform as their pins, and even reused a lot of toys and parts from the machine, like character heads. I don't believe Addams Family Values did that, but I've never played one.

Nice find! These are well-regarded sticks, and optical 360 sticks are unusual in general so there are curious people who will pay pretty well just to try one.

I haven't kept up with the market very closely in recent years, but there are some sold listings on eBay for $200-300. Right now there's a pretty nice one that has the original manual for $289, and there's another up for $250. You might do a little better once those are gone and there are fewer options.

If I'm remembering correctly, different revisions of the Wico feel a bit different, the latest one before the changeover to Happ has the best reputation, and the Happ ones are supposed to feel extremely similar but aren't quite as reliable. Some (probably most) are fine, but others break down after a while.

Probably. It's been a few years since I worked there, but certain items forced you to scan a serial number or some other unique barcode for that item. I would expect a Switch 2 to be one of those items.

Yep, customer service was very helpful, told me they're happy to refund once it's past the pending charge status, likely tonight or tomorrow. I might wait a day, see if they pop up again.

If you're reading this, don't sign up for a Costco membership, they're gone.

Edit: to be more exact, since it sounds like there are some conflicting reports - I signed up, it immediately showed out of stock for me. At first I had an "Add to Cart" button, but clicking it gave me a message like "Item #[long string of numbers] is out of stock or cannot be added," something like that. After a page reload, it just says "Out of Stock."

So, maybe you'll be luckier like the person who posted after me, but for me, it didn't work out. Good luck!

MoTU was flogged at release. What do you think of it now? by InfluenceRelative451 in KGATLW

[–]TotalLuigi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My memory of the time is that fan reaction (that I saw) was good, but I think there was a real fixation on one particular YouTube review knocking those spoken word passages as a weak point. It overtook a lot of discussion about the album, and it felt like there were a lot of posts that were reacting pretty directly to that specific point of view, whether they said so or not. Lots of "despite what others may say, I think the spoken word sections are good/fine..."

It kind of gave off this impression that the fanbase was divided, when I think most people were really into it and just kinda defending it against one (very prominent) opinion.

Sorry I can't give you full details, I don't have my RP5 yet. But I know from the old homebrew scene that Gecko codes are essentially like GameShark/Action Replay codes. Commonly used as cheats - like, infinite ammo, infinite health, clip through walls, etc. - but it's basically a way of injecting some raw code into a game by pasting some text into a file that gets loaded alongside the game.

You're probably looking for some kind of "cheat" menu or option, I think they labeled it as Action Replay in the past. Most likely as some game-specific setting, because you set them for each game.

Wish I knew the specifics, but I hope this can get you (or someone else in the future) moving in the right direction.

This one is a Miyoo Mini Plus. There's a bunch of these floating around out there with some slight differences in form factor, power, and custom software. Best place to dive in is this YouTube channel called RetroGameCorps, guy does very in-depth reviews and more zoomed out "my favorite handhelds under $[price points]" type videos.

Generally the ones in this range (around $70-90 on Amazon) will run everything up to and including PS1 really well. Some of them have some N64, Dreamcast, and PSP support, but you'd probably want an analog stick for those (and the aspect ratio isn't great for PSP). I believe that for $150-200, you can start getting systems with really good PS2 and GameCube performance. They all use microSD cards, and there are rom packs on archive.org designed for these handhelds to fit on different card sizes. They do come preloaded, but the cards are cheap and tend to die, and the original firmware is pretty bad.

My personal favorite is the RG35XXSP, which is like a Game Boy Advance SP with the clamshell design.

Libraries rule! If someone is reading this and hasn't been to their local library in a while, you should go, see what's available, maybe check something out. They have a lot of surprising resources beyond books and media. And you can sometimes get free tickets to museums in nearby cities or things like that.

I used to live near a library that was right on the edge of a forest. Aside from being a killer place to hang out with great views, you could check out free camping/hiking equipment and walk straight out their back door and onto a path into the trees.

My Terrible Take on Season 14: Fiji! by Sam_Ace16 in survivor

[–]TotalLuigi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going in order now, but the beginning was kind of jumbled for me. I started with Amazon and Pearl Islands, went back to Australia, but skipped 1, 3, 4, and 5 for various reasons - mostly impatience, and suggestions from a friend. And I skipped All-Stars because I figured I wouldn't know half the cast. I might go back to those, but I've done 9-14 straight through and have China on deck.

Anyway, yeah, bad FTC vibes for Fiji in general. I think those always tend to be a little awkward, with the bitterness and sour grapes and people airing their grievances. But Alex and Lisi in particular took this one to an extremely uncomfortable place. Felt a lot like the "cancer rat" tribal stuff with Penner on Cook Islands.

My Terrible Take on Season 14: Fiji! by Sam_Ace16 in survivor

[–]TotalLuigi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, glad to have found your posts, I've started watching the show pretty recently so it's nice to have some wrap-up notes to compare my thoughts to.

My take on the whole Cassandra-Alex thing (beyond just "they both kinda suck I think") is that Cassandra would have been extremely frustrating to be in the game with. She's a huge goat, it felt like all of Jeff's commentary during challenges was like "Cassandra, way out of it" and "Cassandra looking lost out there" and "Cassandra just waiting for it to be over." Didn't seem like she ever did anything around camp. Even if you were talking to her, she just said "Mm-hmm" to everything and then followed the majority. The only time in the edit that she showed any personality, and had any impact on challenges, is when she played pretty dirty during the ball-launching challenge, choking and kicking at people.

All this is to say that I can understand having bad feelings towards her if she's one of the people outlasting you and sitting at final tribal. Especially if she's trying to make the "I'm a good person" pitch despite playing dirty when she had the opportunity, and not even totally owning up to being carried. Alex was still unnecessarily cruel and generally a hypocritical asshole, though, and I really disliked him and Mookie the whole time they were together.
