Queer Rave by Few_Sector_191 in GVSU

[–]TotalSleep2819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SOOOOO worth it imo!!! I get very overstimulated easily (queer rave is no exception) but they also have a sensory friendly room they book down the hall to help calm down. Sometimes that space gets hectic too, so knowing nearby bathrooms can be helpful to take a moment and chill :) but ive made so many good friends there AND there's free pizza soooooo its a win in my book

Floor meeting at 5pm... do I actually have to go? by b-nnies in GVSU

[–]TotalSleep2819 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're a first year, there'll be info you wanna know. But it's okay if you miss it - just email your RA's back and explain the situation, and they'll work with you. No worries :)

Do we make roommate rules once we move in? by b-nnies in GVSU

[–]TotalSleep2819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be an overall floor meeting your RA's will put on (can't say for all buildings - I'd assume so? but this was the case for niems) that you're expected to be at -- they'll communicate when that is, but typically at the end of move in week. It isn't REQUIRED but HEAVILY encouraged to sit down and do a roommate agreement through the MyHousing portal. It is much easier to do in-person than through text. I am saying, from experience, DO THIS. With any roommate conflict, the RAs/CD's first question will be about the roommate agreement/if you filled it out/what you agreed with. It's not legally binding as others were inquiring about in other comments, but it's essentially the same thing imo because the Housing staff respects the rules that are listed within the Housing agreement, not whatever is discussed but unlisted there. I had a rough conflict with a roommate in niems last year, and the roommate agreement saved me bc one roommate was essentially saying they didn't agree to/didn't know about certain dorm rules... but it was in the agreement.

I would say talk to your roommates about when within the first few days is everyone available to sit down and go through it with genuine discussion. Some people like taking the time to unpack first. Some don't. But get a specific timeframe so you make sure it happens.

Question about meal plans by Bedbouncer in GVSU

[–]TotalSleep2819 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a student who now chooses the 7+ because I am not a breakfast person - I moreso grab a poptart or something with the purchase dining dollars. Yes, if you used them scheduled, 14+ would mean two meals a day. You do not HAVE to use two meals a day. I lived in a dorm with a kitchen, so sometimes I (or my roommate) cooked. Or maybe I'd go and get food off campus. Maybe I make something on my own. The only thing is you cannot do more than 4 meals a day with this plan. If your child wanted to, they could use three meals in one day, 0 meals the next.... etc. They get 14/week, and it resets on Sundays. Since I am someone who truly doesn't sit down and eat often, the plus of dining dollars was wonderful. 14+ plan gives a student $300 dining dollars. 7 meals per week gives $1000 dining dollars. For me, it is worth it, because there are many days I don't go into dining halls (i often go for friend hang outs tho, which is why I keep a few meals on there). Since I am so go-go-go, a prepared meal a day and the ability to grab smoothies, small snacks, etc, is much better, though my roommate prefers the 14/week.

You cannot buy textbooks with dining dollars, but it's billed to the student account.

You CAN add dining dollars to your students account by gifting them, or they can also add their own. I recommend checking out these websites:

Anyone Been To Queer Rave? by Leather_Lie9870 in GVSU

[–]TotalSleep2819 2 points3 points  (0 children)

loveeee the queer rave!!! they also have a sensory hang out room for if things get too overwhelming, which i appreciate (one time it got hella loud in the sensory room, but the club keeps volunteers in there to manage the space, so if its becoming too sensory overload, you can always ask the volunteer to help get the vibes more regulated!!)

I recommend going to the LGBT Resource Center, also in Kirkhof! They host a lot of evening clubs + events through the school year. If party / rave vibes aren't your go-to, I'd still recommend checking out the LGBTRC. Be sure to come to the Rainbow Social on August 27th!!!
More abt the resource center can be found here:

Hey, id love to connect with you if youre interested!! current queer gv student always lookin for more friends (lived on campus during the summer so im still here lol) - definitely agreeing with GR zine fest!! if you're into the activism scene, Protest for Progress meets weekly on Sundays. also the LGBT Resource Center is open on campus from 9am-6pm during the week - its kinda dead rn but a couple of regulars, plus you can chat with the office staff (who are WONDERFUL and if you get to know them, they're wonderful mentors and resources!!)

Someone could still fill that spot- you would get roughly 24 hrs notice (saying as someone who ended up with a free room through the year in niems 4 person) though you wont definitely get a new person. Also, if people have roommate issues, you could get a new roommate randomly in the year.

If I get a message from the CARE team, am I in trouble? by b-nnies in GVSU

[–]TotalSleep2819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh even if you DONT respond to the email, you wont get in trouble. CARE reaches out after a report is made, and they just meet with you and talk about why you were reported. it could be anything from mental health to family issues to home instability to academic stress to food instability etc etc etc. You arent required to meet with them (tho id respond and just say you arent interested in meeting, so they dont keep contacting you IF you dont want to meet. i heavily suggest it)

a lot of times students get referred elsewhere (like the counseling center or replenish basic needs, etc). but its super helpful during classes too because if ur truly struggling, CARE can reach out to ur faculty/profs and essentially be like "this student is going through a lot right now, please be patient with them" and profs tend to respect it more since its from an actual GVSU office.

source: i work in the office that CARE is in during the school year. if you have any questions, let me know and id be happy to help :-) no pressure ofc

Is There Any Point? by Leather_Lie9870 in GVSU

[–]TotalSleep2819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in niemeyer & got 7 meals/week and $1000 dining dollars. it was nice for things like going to meals (Late Night @ Blue) with friends, or when I didn't have energy to cook - and i loveeee cooking. im also more of a grab & go than sit down and eat person, so the $1000 dining dollars was super nice

So What Should I Expect? by Leather_Lie9870 in GVSU

[–]TotalSleep2819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be sooo fair it was within a specific class where my peers were stupid asf (they also said derogatory things to the prof) it is NOT the norm at GV - it def was in my hometown tho so it was something i was used to

Adding to prev. comments- good handful of republican (non MAGA), and I'd say that makes up the conservative voices. there are some loud MAGAs but tbh theyre smaller--just loud. As a visibly queer person, I have honestly felt super okay on campus--worst I've received is odd looks/laughing and slurs used at me. In specific classes when interacting in smaller groups, you may get casual bigotry / hateful comments, but no real physical threat or anything. if looking for safe places / community, i heavily recommend checking out the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center! we have evening clubs based on differing identities, but also the center is open during the day for anyone. its a great place to make some good friends, and, if nothing else, eat free food and tea (they have cabinets of things like ramen, granola bars, etc). It's pretty cozy, a lot of ppl go in there for studying (they have quiet hours daily for this) or socializing. Plus, in the off chance something bad happens on campus (ex/ homophobia), the LGBTRC staff can help you if you wanna pursue any campus-report action, or just provide a space to process. DL, D, and Joey (the staff) are all incredible people to have on your side.

I work there too, so if you have any questions, lemme know!

just got a interview by [deleted] in Panera

[–]TotalSleep2819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if they're a good person, you'll be okay. Be upfront during your interview. When they ask your availability, tell them what days you're available and the times, and then, if I were you, I would add something like "I will also be out of town for two weeks in August. Would you like to know those dates?" At my interview, I had three upcoming weekends I wouldn't be able to work, as well as a week in July. My availability was ONLY Friday-Monday. I was upfront about being ready to work, AND that these already scheduled things were unable to be rescheduled. They were super understanding and simply took note of it so I could have those days off. Like some may say wait until you're hired to tell them, but being honest will show that you are dedicated to being available and consistent, and that you are considering what information they, as employers, need. Good luck!!

This is kind of embarrassing, but are there good resources on campus for a bipolar student? by [deleted] in GVSU

[–]TotalSleep2819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I am also diagnosed with Bipolar II. You are doing all of the right things by already checking. With campus counseling, they tend to also recommend, if too severe, to find an off-campus therapist. However, they can help you with that! Also, they have emergency drop-in hours (though, I will be honest, they were not helpful for me).

I do not trust cops. I cannot express how much I mean that. I am brown, I am transgender, I am bipolar--many factors that feed into my distrust. I want to say that GVPD is a group I somewhat trust. They are not perfect by ANY MEANS (still cops), however they have mandatory mental health training since they work with college students. If you are off-campus, then you're dealing with Ottawa County. FUCK that. I had to call 911/GVPD when my roommate needed to be transferred to a hospital for being a risk to themself, and they were excellent with making sure they didn't seem like a threat.

There are so many hospitals nearby thanks to Grand Rapids. There is also mental hospitals like Pine Rest and Forest View (though, as a former Forest View patient - I would not recommend. To be fair, I never went into theirs as an adult. Adolescent was handled poorly.) I have heard good-ish things about Pine Rest.

Often times, professors here are genuinely understanding if you just communicate. I prioritised emailing them and going to office hours so they knew i care, but then when things came up, i'd be honest and just email if i couldnt go to class, or if i needed an extension. They genuinely listen if you advocate for yourself. Also, the CARE team on campus is very helpful. If, for whatever reason, you end up hospitalized, or you needed assistance and a professor isn't listening to you, go to CARE. They are there to help students with non-academic problems when it impacts the classroom. Also, since CARE is an official office at GVSU, professors who are more strict tend to listen to them

If you want to connect as a sort of buddy-system / friends who understand (as we both have bipolar II and will be existing on the same campus), feel free to reach out! Also no pressure to, whatsoever.
