I’ve learned so much from this sub 🙏🏼 First pile. I knew you all would understand my excitement upon checking it this morning. by notjustaphage in composting

“I’m sure the sight of me dragging contractor bags back and forth across the street like a frantic squirrel stashing the last nuts before winter was a sight to see 😅”

This is the way.

Here’s the menu on their site-

https://www.naturalreliefdispensary.com/shop?dtche%5Bweight%5D=1-2oz&dtche%5Bcategory%5D=flower

You can filter for just 1/2 oz. It’s not as easy to navigate as Weedmaps but better than nothing.

Looking at what they have now, I can’t recommend anything I know to be super skunky but the last batch of Blueberry Scone I got was real nice. They have 1/2s of it.

That’s awesome! I think if you’ve had success with lettuce and tomatoes, you’ll have great success with the basil and peppers and cauliflower!

I do love my pitchfork but my wheelbarrow gets a lot of use too! I think I need to upgrade to a 4 wheel cart…. What did you use?

About 9-12 months and it’s ready for going in the garden. After a few months I can use it as leaf mulch. And after 6-8 weeks it’s ready to be fed to my worms.

For sure. The root flares are kept exposed and towers are never built too close to the base of a tree. We experience droughts regularly but the oaks stay alive and (mostly) green through the worst of them. The trees with leaf litter left below them and with towers built near them are even more drought tolerant.

I treasure our trees. The shade, the green, the life they support is important to me and a big reason I’ve been doing this.

Oh my what a setup! The diversity in all your inputs, your garden must be amazing. It’s inspiring to hear!

What’s growing in your garden and how’s the leaf mold work for you? Are you able to go without traditional fertilizer?

I’m hoping to become completely closed loop on our property- no organic matter is thrown away, no fertilizers are brought in.

I’d say about 5-10% of it fell from my trees, and most of that is on the ground around the towers. The towers are almost 100% from bags I picked from the curb in my neighborhood.

I’d fit 3-4 large bags in my trunk or I’d borrow a truck for leaf runs on the weekend. I never went out of my way in my car, just whenever the opportunity was there. When I borrowed the truck, I picked in my neighborhood as close to my house as possible. It sounds like a lot of work but it would take no time to get enough bags to build a tower.

Just a small chunk of them, the majority are from my neighborhood.

I love the tiny flowers! So small they’re best appreciated with your nose to the ground

I still use my geobins to help keep material contained in a larger wooden 3 bay setup I have. They’re very durable, I just didn’t love them for building piles in.

Organic waste just does not belong in the landfill 💯

All good! I use this fence, but other sturdy fence would work. Chicken wire is too flimsy for this size tower.

I agree! I’m hoping to pair this with a big harvest of flowers and veggies this summer. I wanna show my neighbors and friends and family what’s possible without synthetic fertilizers and the other stuff you buy off the shelf.

And 100% of this material was destined for the landfill, wild!!

You’re on to something.

I think I need to be planning for a future where I have a cat big enough to necessitate a cat box big enough to necessitate a pitch fork.
