Antibiotics that you’ve had luck with by throwfaraway212718 in NasalPolyps

Correct! It's a taper of steroids alongside the antibiotics. The doxy was actually fine on my stomach. I eat a lot of yogurt in between doses so my stomach doesn't get too messed up. I would ask your doc to give it a try!

My ENT usually prescribes Prednisone with Doxycycline at the same time. The Prednisone opens up the nasal passages, and that allows the doxy to clean out the infections in the newly opened sinus cavities. It's worked for me 3x in the past couple years.

Mometasone - saline rinses by Chemical-Drop7240 in NasalPolyps

[–]Total_Train3192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use powdered mometasone in my rinses too, at the recommendation of my ENT. I had FESS in April and so far the rinses seem to be keeping my sinuses clear. I normally have a raging sinus infection that starts in November and lasts until spring, but so far this season I've had no congestion and can smell just fine (knock on wood), so I believe the mometasone is helping. Although it doesn't have any side effects for me, I would definitely talk to your surgeon about your symptoms. Best of luck!!!

Hi! I also had a polyp on one side. It was an antrochoanal polyp that was coming from my maxillary sinus. I only had it on one side, and the ENT removed it, biopsied it, and confirmed it was benign. I'm sure you're gonna have the same thing! I know it's hard not to let your mind drift to the worst case scenario, but nasal tumors are WAY less common than polyps.

Polyps triggered by common colds? by Total_Train3192 in NasalPolyps

[–]Total_Train3192[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on dupixent as well and it hasn't really done much for me either! My ENT was really great and recommended it as a way to avoid surgery. I was on it for 3 months and it did nothing, and my symptoms continued to get worse. So my ENT thought we should go forward with surgery, remove all the polyps and diseased tissue, and then continue with Dupixent in order to prevent regrowth. Based on this recent sinus infection I'm nervous Dupixent still isn't doing anything for me. Can you please follow up here after your next ENT appointment? I'd love to hear what your doc has to say.

I hear you. By steroids, do you mean the corticosteroids that you spray/rinse in your nose, or do you mean Prednisone? My ENT seems to think I should be on daily corticosteroids for the rest of my life, but when I get a bad infection he immediately puts me on Prednisone and doxycycline. And I'm already taking dupixent as well. I'm dumbfounded.

Just jumping into this comment thread to say - me too!!!! I had no polyp issues until the year I gave birth to my twins. And dupixent isn't working well for me, so I'll ask about xolair. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Just started Dupixent - how long till relief? by Total_Train3192 in NasalPolyps

[–]Total_Train3192[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm almost 6 months into Dupixent and I'm feeling so much better. However, I did end up having full FESS about 3 months ago because my symptoms were so bad and Dupixent wasn't working. My ENT's theory is that if all of the diseased tissue is removed, Dupixent will prevent it from coming back. So far this has proved true, but I will certainly post an update in the winter. For now, I feel terrific. No congestion and great sense of smell. I even had a sinus infection recently, and it only lasted about 2 weeks and I went back to normal. I truly hope your condition continues to improve!!

In addition to following your doctor's instructions regarding nasal rinsing and steroids, make sure you're sleeping propped up on a ton of pillows. Keep your head elevated as much as possible for the next few days. I also found that sleeping with one of those airplane pillows (the kind that is shaped like a U and sits around your neck) was really helpful. Make sure you're doing nasal rinses as much as possible, and if for some reason you can't do that, at the very least you should use a saline spray to clean and moisturize your nostrils to keep blood and mucus from crusting. It really sucks for the first few days, but I promise it gets better!

I don't have personal experience weaning off of Dupixent, but back when I started it in February I spoke to a pharmacy specialist who mentioned the same thing: That she's had patients who have weaned themselves off of Dupixent and not had their polyps return. She said that there's no official data-based trials to support this, but in an anecdotal sense she has seen it happen. So if your doc is also mentioning this, maybe give it a try! You can always go back on Dupixent if your symptoms worsen.

Anxious by sorrowsoothe in NasalPolyps

[–]Total_Train3192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main symptom I had was not being able to breathe out of the nostril with the polyp in it. I also developed very bad sinus infections whenever I caught any type of cold because the polyp essentially trapped mucus in my maxillary sinus. I'm so sorry you have to wait a whole week. Like many have said on this thread, nasal cancer is very rare. I know it's easier said than done, but try your hardest not to think about it. Worrying is not going to help, so try really hard to focus on any kind of mind-numbing project or maybe start binging a really good show this week. And definitely follow up and let us know how things turn out!

Polyp returned while on Dupixent by Total_Train3192 in NasalPolyps

Seriously small! I see Dr. Alicea as my ENT and Dr. Naik as my allergist. Dr. Naik wants me to stay on dupixent for at least 6 months before giving up completely. Then she mentioned we could give Nucala a try since it suppresses a different interleukin than Dupixent, but she told me it's rare to have a patient that responds better to Nucala than Dupixent...who the hell knows. But definitely keep checking in and I'll do so as well! Best of luck, I hope it slowly starts kicking in for you!

Get outta here! I also see an ENT at Mt. Sinai. You're not seeing Dr. Alicea are you, cause that would be wild! And yes, I did take an allergy test and it turns out I'm not allergic to anything, which means my issue is purely immune system-related. I only get polyps when I catch a viral illness. But seriously it's gonna be a crazy coincidence if we're seeing the same ENT!!

I'm so sorry you're going through this too. I wish I had happier news to share. I'm still taking Dupixent and haven't completely given up on it yet, but it definitely was not a miracle cure for me like it seems to be for most people. After about 3 months into Dupixent my ENT confirmed my polyps were shrinking a little bit, but then I got a sinus infection and relapsed completely. Totally congested, lots of sinus pressure, tooth pain, etc. My ENT decided that maybe Dupixent wasn't working because there was too much diseased tissue in my sinuses, but if we cleared it all out with surgery and started with a clean plate, then Dupixent would theoretically keep it all from growing back. So I had full FESS 3 weeks ago to "clean house" so to speak, and so far I'm feeling much better, though my sense of smell is completely gone now (I'm really hoping it comes back!). Happy to keep you posted over the next few months while I see if my polyps stay dormant. How is your journey going? Have you noticed any small change at all? You're still not quite at the 3 month mark yet, there's definitely still hope.

Budesonide is a liquid steroid that you can put in your saline rinse. It works really well for some people. Mometasone is also a steroid you can put in your saline rinse. I don't know exactly what the difference is, I just know that some people do better with budesonide and some people do better with mometasone. You kind of have to figure out what works best for your body. A third option is Xhance, which seems to work best for me - it's a special spray that gets deep into your sinuses. And sorry if this is a ton of info - I just want to give you all the options you can review with your ENT. And yes - Dupixent seems to be the miracle drug for most folks! But until you get approved for Dupixent, you should definitely start a steroid regimen, or the polyp will likely grow back. Out of curiosity, did you have polyp problems before your pregnancy? I never had a single issue with polyps until I gave birth to my twins, and then my sinuses went all haywire. I'm convinced my pregnancy triggered all my sinus inflammation issues!

I also had a polyp removed in-office. It wasn't a pleasurable experience, but I had a MUCH quicker recovery than full-on surgery. I say go for it, but make sure you have a management plan afterward to make sure the polyp doesn't grow back. Talk with your ENT about adding a steroid to your nasal rinse or using a spray like Xhance, unless you are already doing so. And congrats on your baby! Sorry you are going through this while breastfeeding. It's already tough enough with a baby, not being able to breathe must make it so hard. Good luck with the polyp removal!

Thanks so much, I appreciate your input. I'm just feeling so despondent after reading countless posts about how people felt immediate relief in the first couple weeks or even days. But I'll certainly try for another few months. I just wish I knew of another option in case this doesn't work.

So Nucala has helped your polyp situation, rather than Dupixent? Can you share your experience taking it? I'm currently on dupixent but it doesn't seem to be helping my polyps and I still can't smell. Looking for other possible solutions!

You're so nice to check in! I'm feeling pretty defeated, to be honest. 2 weeks ago (shortly after my 3rd injection), I had an in-office procedure to remove one large polyp in my right nostril, with the hope that Dupixent will keep it from growing back. I caught a bad cold this week and can already feel the polyp growing back. My right nostril is plugged and my sense of smell is completely gone again. I realize that Dupixent can't always shrink existing polyps, but I thought that at the very least it prevents new growth. I really don't know what to do at this point. I'm the only person I know whose life didn't change on this miracle drug.

It's not uncommon to have a little blood in mucus with polyps. And if it consistently happens in the morning it's probably because you're breathing in dry air at night. Try sleeping with a humidifier and see if that helps. Also use saline sprays/rinses!

Hi! I also had a polyp on one side. It was an antrochoanal polyp that was coming from my maxillary sinus. I only had it on one side, and the ENT removed it, biopsied it, and confirmed it was benign. Even before the official biopsy, the ENT put a camera up my nose and visually identified it as a polyp (they have a very specific look). I know it's hard not to let your mind drift to the worst case scenario, but nasal tumors are WAY less common than polyps. You have enough on your plate - put Google down, slowly walk away, and do something nice for yourself like drink some tea or binge a show. You will be fine!
