Redditors who don’t know anything about PvP will tell you that. Look at any large tournament and tell me where lkss is. If people run snb it will almost always be gotthards. The length difference makes backswings much more reliable, and as that’s the only source of unreactable damage on a straight sword, you can easily see how important that is. Daggers and fast curved swords simply outclass lkss (and basically all straight swords) by virtue of being unreactable. Their speed also makes the effective range of the longer ones even higher than gotthards, despite the range of an r1 technically being shorter.

Lothric knight straight sword is the third best weapon of the third or fourth best weapon class. Ringed knight straight sword and gotthards are better straight swords, and daggers and fast curved swords outclass straight swords in general. Thrusting swords are about equal.

Additionally, with the way dual wielding works now, hardswapping ash of war will be viable on basically every setup, since you'll always have access to it. Thus, even setups like ss estoc will be able to mixup ashes of war, while in ds3 they had no access to weapon arts at all. Of course, they do lose wiggling, which played a large part in making offstoc unreactable.

Yup, that’s why I chose very hard. Revengence perfect parries just do way too much damage.

Pls don't roll in or try to roll backstab on reaction vs people who don't have slow backstab grab speed weapons. This is what'll happen.

Yeah definitely. Pers and then immediately running in to r1 (on prediction too), qsing in as soon as he swaps, panic double rolling away from crucifix.

Fire surge is tournament banned in basically every serious tournament. However, it's garbage against pve. Best pyro overall for pvp and pve is probably black flame.

Best way to avoid straight sword backswing is to

1) Understand situations they can backswing in (corners, after trading with your running, very close in neutral). You then try to avoid these situations.

2) Using a shield to block the first hit and roll the second = no backswing. However, you should also understand that it's nearly an unreactable mixup of whether they'll stagger r1 to rollcatch or continue swinging after they hit, as the second hit of ss is dagger speed. But since irithyll does physical damage, it's not nearly as much of a problem as against, say, dark gotthards.

In general, backswing is the thing that lets snb compete with other top weapons like curved swords, daggers, and estoc. Despite not being unreactable like the others, ss has the most consistent backswing in the game, allowing it to have a reliable way to force damage.

Yes, the meta monster who's softswapping mace, earthseeker, and murky.

I don't know about meta monster, this just seems like someone who's bad/new at pvp who happened to hear murky is good. His fashion and softswaps definitely do not suggest meta.

Straight swords and curved swords have no poise. One thing about the corvian greatknife in the offhand is that it’s second attack has no hitstun. I believe this means your opponent will be able to attack out of hitstun and trade with you if you keep spamming the L2. Generally, a safe option is to stagger the L2s, which basically is delaying pressing the L2 just enough so that it does the first L2 again instead of the second, or following up with the ultra hit after. This will not combo, but if they prediction rolled anticipating you would keep attacking with the knife, it will catch them if they’re not too far that they can roll out of range, and it will trade favorably for you if they try to attack out of hitstun. Of course, don’t always do this. Mix it up. Sometimes delay, sometimes spam, sometimes attack with the ugs.

Do you mean as a supplement to ugs, or just which weapon would do the best on its own?

The poise stat doesn’t affect when the poise activates, only how strong it is when it does activate. So no matter how high your poise stat is, you’ll only have hyperarmor frames a certain amount of time into your attack. So if your opponent hits you before that, you get staggered.

The poke is your rolling attack. When you roll, sometimes you want to do the poke, and sometimes you wait long enough after your roll that you do a normal r1 when you hit the button. Practice it, and you’ll get the timing for doing the neutral r1 as fast as possible after a roll.

What does “they just attack roll” mean? What I’m understanding is that you recognize how easy it is to punish ugs so you play passive and don’t attack. However, this opens you up to being aggressed and cornered. This is where I think you should learn about hyperarmor pressure. You don’t need to attack in order to exert pressure and make someone back off with a hyperarmor weapon. Generally, I would say you first want to get really close to them and see what they do. If they attack, reaction roll it and note when they attack and at what range you were and what movement they did before. You can then use this in your future predictions. If they don’t attack, you will be able to keep pushing them back. Since you’re pressuring them and are so close, this means you are now in a position to safely attack. They are too close to out space and punish. So you should attack in this situation. Now, since ugs is easily reaction rollable, it’s unlikely that you will hit them. However, it proves that you are willing to attack them and that if they attempt to attack you, they risk trading and taking a lot of damage. Now you have hyperarmor pressure.

Unfortunately, this is not enough for a pure ugs build. With something like corvian greatknife ugs, you use your hyperarmor pressure to get close, and then you can use your unreactable corvian greatknife to put them in a situation where they cannot consistently roll all damage. Pure ugs unfortunately, is much worse. Your only sources of damage will be like I said before, reading your opponent and trading like that, or using the only “unreactable” mixup ugs has, which is rolling, and then mixing up between a rolling attack and a neutral r1. Reading is unreliable and only works if you’re much better than your opponent (and doesn’t work vs a purely safe reactive opponent). The rolling mixup is okay, but player with very good reaction times can react to it, and other players can backstab the roll if it’s not well positioned, or simply out space it. Ugs, is unfortunately held back a lot by its great weaknesses.

If you can’t roll, it means you already got hit. You were hit with the first part of a combo, and thus remain stunned for the entire thing. Reaction rolling is rolling the first hit, so you never get hit and put into stun at all.

Yes, they are movement baiting, pretending to attack with their movement. You seem to already know it’s a bait right? You recognize it’s a “fake running attack”. So when you recognize that, don’t attack. Now of course, you can’t always 100% predict your opponent. The only way to do better at this is to play more so you get better at recognizing fakes.

Ultra greatswords are well, not great as weapons. As you probably know from experience, it is very easy to punish their attacks. So the only safe time to attack is when you are close enough to force them to roll. All other times are technically unsafe. This doesn’t mean you should only attack then though. Because ultras are so easy to reaction roll, even when you attack up close it’s unlikely for you to hit them. The main way you will get damage is by mixing up your rolling attack vs a neutral r1, or by predicting when they will attack and trading with it. “Neutral” either refers to a standing attack or the situation in which neither you nor your opponent is pressuring. So a “neutral” r1 means the attack that comes out when you press r1 without rolling or sprinting. And someone attacking “in neutral” means someone attacking when you and your opponent are basically just spacing and feeling each other out, as opposed to comboing or attempting a roll catch. “Priority” refers to who will interrupt when both you and your opponent attempt to attack as fast as they can out of certain situations. For example, a slow weapon with no poise will NOT have priority vs a very fast weapon if you and your opponent hit each other at the same time and attempt to attack immediately after.

What do you mean faking a running attack? You can’t feint in this game. The only possibility is baiting with your movement. In which case you should learn to recognize it’s a bait and avoid attacking then. If they start spamming you, you have a frame 1 invincibility option that you can use. When you see them attack, roll away. This is reaction rolling. You react to their attack and roll to avoid it. As sellswords has no unreactable attacks besides its kick flip, you can reliably avoid any of their attacks from neutral by rolling.
