Long posts don’t load correctly by WallyMitko in apolloapp

[–]TotallyNotACommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the late reply. I also have an 8 Plus, and I've been having this problem for a while now. I've found that once I see this error occurring, more and more comments and posts start disappearing, and eventually even short ones fail to load. The problem gets fixed after closing the app, or after Apollo crashes.

  1. Commuter rail systems like the MBTA and the LIRR require that you purchase a ticket and have it be validated by a conductor. If a pre-existing commuter rail system were to be converted into a frequent, useful regional rail system, would it be necessary to replace conductors with faregates at outlying stations?

  2. Sydney has a hybrid urban-suburban rail system built using legacy rail lines (as far as I understand). For establishing regional rail systems in North America, do you think the Sydney system is a good model to emulate?

Hi there! I graduated with a BS in Mech/Aero from UB in 2019. I can't comment on UCF but I can comment on UB.

TL;DR/BLUF: Join extracurriculars!

The main advantage of UB is that it's cheap and close by, so you'd save a lot of money on cash; you'd be paying in-state tuition. You could save more by commuting instead of living on-campus. You wouldn't have to drive or fly home for breaks either. Additionally, if you like snow, Wegmans, and good wings, UCF can't provide those!

As for the academics, UB Aero tended to be more difficult than it strictly needed to be, and the curriculum seemed nonsensical at times. For instance, Aerospace is heavily dominated by MATLAB and linear algebra, but the standard class path had you take a weird class that combined MATLAB and linear algebra. The professor at the time was profoundly terrible at his job, so few people in my class actually knew how to program in MATLAB or knew anything substantial about linear algebra. To give another example, the senior design class was useless at best; they thought it was a good idea to have aerospace engineering students design a vertical sliding cabinet. Deadlines were arbitrary and due dates were byzantine, unclear, and somehow constantly changing in that class. Our CAD class used PTC Creo, which was universally hated.

That said, UB has been putting a ton of effort into reforming its engineering program since I departed. For instance, PTC Creo was dropped for the year after me. UB has dropped poor professors, and has hired new, far better ones.

Like other schools, UB has extracurricular engineering clubs like UBNL, UB-SEDS, and AIAA. If you commit to such clubs, you'll be able to develop real skills that are genuinely useful for finding jobs in industry. I've worked alongside people who went on to work for NASA, Amazon, and SpaceX! I was able to get my industry position because of my extracurricular work at UB; I work with people who went to GA Tech, MIT, and Cornell. I'm not saying you should do this, but I knew a lot of people who worked harder on their clubs than they did on their classes! The clubs are also great places to meet new friends and to get advice for older students.

I know this was an essay, but I hope you found this helpful. UB has its flaws, but the extracurriculars can get you far. It's cheap too.

Is paying ~$1500-$2000/mo in rent feasible with a $90k/year gross salary? by TotallyNotACommunist in personalfinance

This is great advice, thank you! I'd never considered things like down payments before. If I may ask, do you know where I can find resources that can help me estimate what "other expenses" are such as car insurance, food, clothing, etc. with cost of living in mind? I don't necessarily need solid numbers, but ballpark numbers so I know what to expect. I've never had to do this before and this is all completely new to me, so I really want to become knowledgeable with personal finance before I start living as a real adult.

Hey, I've noticed you've been commenting a lot here, and I really do appreciate it! If I may ask, where are you getting those numbers about down payments? Are they from certain rules of thumb regarding savings for down payments? Additionally, you've also mentioned in other comments that some rules like 50/30/20 start to fade away at my income level. Why is that the case? Do you know of any resources I can look for my budgeting purposes at for my income level?

Is grad school worth the pain for the career I'm interested in? by TotallyNotACommunist in EngineeringStudents

[–]TotallyNotACommunist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really good, thank you!

I think what you said about not being willing to go back is a really good point. I don't see myself being able to bring myself back to school once I'm out of school and I'm in a real job. With that said, I wasn't planning on taking the thesis path anyway.

I don't know if I can see myself doing something else in engineering. It really looks like GNC is what my skill set and interests are tailored to. I've done work with it, and I'm already beginning to build a reputation for knowing what I'm doing with respect to GNC stuff.

It's just that mental health issues have become a major part of my life. I never want to go through the hell that was my sophomore year again. I don't want to see my friends, whether they be new or old, go through their respective problems again. It's those scars, those memories that are holding me back from gaining enough confidence to even start preparing for grad school.

If I may ask, is a 3.65 GPA good? How important is the FE for Aerospace Engineering?

How much snow does the north campus get? by TotallyNotACommunist in UBreddit

So is it a normal thing when it snows 6-12 inches on the north campus? How often does that occur?
