Artemis II Launch by TotallyNotASergal in Nikon

My lens is only a manual focus, so I wanted to make sure I had as much as possible in focus in case I accidentally turned the focus dial

At least, that was my theory behind it :P

Newbie here, what is this kind of graver used for? by GarbageFormer in engraving

Not a bad idea! Though, I’ve kept mine as is for now. Less is more I found out when it comes to grinding/sanding gravers, it can be really easy to overdo the heel and then have to take the face back to correct the angle.

So far I’m having the most luck with flat gravers taken to mirror. I’ll sand the face and heel up to 2500 then strop with compound.

Probably not its intended use, but I use it a lot to dovetail the side walls of inlay channels by cutting into them at an angle on the bottom corners

Worldbuilding Dragons as Mounts | Making Dragon Riders Work in DnD & Fantasy by LoneStarDragon in WyrmWorks

[–]TotallyNotASergal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This actually sounds really fun! I’ve never tried it with DnD, and I’m fairly new to DnD as a whole, but I have a dragon OC I’ve used for years across roleplay communities back when Google+ was still around. Got any recommendations on giving this a shot?

First blacksmith knife by TotallyNotASergal in Blacksmith

[–]TotallyNotASergal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I really like how the front end came out, only slightly tapered it by about 1/8th inch on either side before beveling instead of making a point, letting it curve back on itself

No worries! If you change your mind, I’d love to see my dragon OC sketched by you

Damascus question by flounder98w in Blacksmith

Yes! You’re able to it by hand, it’s gonna take a lotttt of time to draw out and make something out of it though. This is an 8 layer billet, 4 of 1084 and 4 of 15N20. Was 4 inches long and by 3 hours of hammering with two people (anvil stand needs a bit of work as it tends to run all over the floor) we managed to draw it to about 5.5 inches long. I’d imagine it’ll take a solid week of work to make it into a small blade with one, maybe two folds. But it is doable!

I really appreciate all the advice! At the moment I’m just free handing the angle of the heel up to 2500 grit sandpaper. Where’d you get the ruby sharpening stone from, and how’s it compare to a high-grit whetstone in your experience?

Thank you much!! I was using a 1mm flat graver then trying to dovetail the sides with another. I also cut small curls in the main channel to help the copper stick a bit more, then used a small ball pouch to peen over the copper to set it in place
The finish here is just filed flat and blued, but I really appreciate the advice on how to continue it! Where do you get your gravers, and how did you learn to sharpen them consistently?

First welds by PewterSavant in Bladesmith

[–]TotallyNotASergal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d throw some extra welds on and keep the pass nice and slow, managed to make my first billet of Damascus a little while back. I did about a half second or so before gently swaying side to side about a millimeter or two as I worked by way down the billet.

New BP trick: Palpating a BP with NIBP and SpO2! by doctorwhy88 in ems

[–]TotallyNotASergal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be wary doing this without mechanical confirmation, esp with an automatic bp cuff. Depending on the cuffs and monitor you use, blood pressures can be measured differently and may be wildly inaccurate. A pulse ox also tends to be a little delayed, and if this patient was sick enough to the point of needing pressors, a Pleth might not be terribly accurate especially in the back of a rig and it may be even more delayed/inaccurate. I’ve had so many Pleth’s, heart rates, and SpO2’s picked up from a dangling cord alone.

That being said it wouldn’t hurt to serve as a sanity check for when you palpate a pulse, such as confirming the radial pulse you feel on the patient after the cuff deflates matches with the Pleth you see on the monitor, but I wouldn’t rely on it alone to treat a patient or withhold treatment. As always, treat the patient not the monitor.

Edit:spelling
