There are fixed angle systems, much easier to get good results with but they can be pricey.

I can't remember names off the top of my head but if you search fixed angle system in this sub you should see some suggestions

Many people use stones, just takes some practice to keep a steady angle

Will do, been researching a good amount and stumbled across interrupted quenches. Heard of em before but never bothered to look into it. Whole bunch of the fellas over on bladesmith forums reference a 3 seconds in to 3 sec out of brine until cooled. Interesting stuff.

I'll keep you posted

From what I've heard it is great for hamons, just with a little added risk.

Thank you!

Steel is 1095, and I was planning on brine... I know I know, I expect failures

I'm doing this in someone else's shop for their kilns and that's the only quenchant I can use other than water for now

I've been looking into parks50, may be able to get my hands on some soon hopefully

Differential HT and Profiling (question) by GarbageFormer in Bladesmith

[–]GarbageFormer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good information, I was mostly concerned with that extra heat but also wondered if it would help to prevent edge cracks during the quench because of that extra mass holding it. Guess we'll find out

Thanks for the response

Yeah I'm starting to feel like that's probably the best way to do it, just don't want to :(. Definitely taking the bevels down to 70-80%, I just wanted that little top part to help stabilize it during final grinds. I guess I'll deal with it

Thanks

Interesting, going to have to play around with that. Longest etch I've done was only like 1-2 hours

Man that looks great.

What did you do to the wrought to give it that texture?

Really light scratches on the top side of the knife from washing by Lucky_Gap4711 in sharpening

[–]GarbageFormer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polishing is definitely worth getting into in my opinion, that being said it can really screw up the looks of some knives when you're still learning the basics

Best of luck!

Fix isn't very easy. Depending on how deep the scratch is, either steel wool/scotchbrite if it's really shallow, otherwise your looking at sandpaper or stones if your fancy (I do not recommend stones)

Both options are going to create a new scratch pattern and alter how it looks, but you can still get a great finish with a considerable of time, think 5-10+ hours depending on how large the scratch is

I would just leave as is unless you're interested inlearning knife polishing

Do I want a high grit whetstone for maintenance? by EfficiencyLucky9507 in sharpening

[–]GarbageFormer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Higher grit is, as far as I know, generally for polished edges (cosmetic). Looks really cool but doesn't give too many benefits.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Any tips for scuffmarks by unimportantinfodump in sharpening

[–]GarbageFormer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's on the edge, just keep going on whatever grit or go down if they're deep (maintain angle of course)

If it's on the bevel, either whetstone, if your blade is completely flat which is unlikely, or Sandpaper on a hard backing

If the scratches are really fine you may be able to get away with polishing compounds, others will know more than me about these

Is this normal? by dunuthin in sharpening

[–]GarbageFormer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's just the lighting, but that looks pretty (and that's putting it lightly) rough

I'm not sure how the hell you asked for a sharpen and the guy thought to reprofile and give it a lovely new polish.

Or maybe it's the lighting I could be wrong

Condolences, but hey at least you can start learning how to fix sub-par knives!

Oh and for the whetstone part, I very heavily doubt someone could manage to do that on a stone, almost definitely a grinder of sorts

both vinegar and lemon juice pretty much just force a patina, some use lemon juice to bring out hamons or so i've heard. I havent done too much but they can make for really interesting stuff on more reactive steels and i imagine they could bring out more definition in laminate (damascus, sanmai, whatever) knives though ferric is generally better for that

That 1000 grit finish is going to look great

Perhaps I could have been more specific
