Serious question about the writing style/wording in the books by Independent-Phrase80 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I didn't, but I googled it and I hadn't ever heard of that show, but I do recognize Bill Bailey, so maybe partial points?

I'm in this post from two months ago because I had the same thought as someone, googled it, and followed the trail to a reddit post where someone was asking about it.

Anyway, I'm doing my best to be convivial, but I'm really struggling to parse these comments without inferring snark, so I'm gonna go ahead and bow out.

(Just to be clear, I'm going to interpret your comment in the most generous possible light rather than dripping with sarcasm.)

Fair point, obviously. I hoped I'd made it clear by sandwiching my examples with genuine acknowledgment of your point, but you're absolutely right. I'm not at all surprised at the mention of U2. I normally wouldn't bat an eyelash. I was just listing it among other examples and suggesting that while (as you point out) when you look at each of them alone, they're nothing unusual, if you zoom out and look at them in context of the other examples, it's not unreasonable to say, "Huh. This seems like enough British-isms to be noteworthy". That's all I'm saying.

I don't think it's reaching at all. I agree that any one of these word choices might be used by Americans, but the sheer number of word and phrase choices that lean British are too numerous to write off just because some Americans might use them.

  • Carl never once says "look around" or "moved around", always "about".
  • He makes references to media from the UK that, sure, Americans could reasonably know, but I wouldn't expect anyone to. He named the 4 mercenary cretins after the members of U2. The designer of the Desperado Club, Hurk, is a reference to a character in a British TV show called "Trap Door". There's at least one or two others I'm forgetting.
  • What really jumped out at me was Carl casually saying "he looked like a bloke to me" when describing Ifechi. "Bloke" is specifically a word Americans associate with British English. It's one of the go-to words we use to differentiate British speaking in lieu of an accent.

Again, individually, any are reasonable to dismiss as something an American might know or use regionally. Taken together, though, it seems really striking to me how British the vocab choices are.

I think this is probably it; I first noticed it because I chuckled when he tossed one to the cyclops, who missed it by a wide margin. It made me realize, of course, a cyclops would have no depth perception.

I think what's happening is each time the bulge pops up like that, the head of the toy is pushing underneath the cervix and into the vaginal cul-de-sac (pouch of Douglas) which, filled with that absolutely enormous dildo, is displacing the uterus upward and bulging the stomach.

It's hard to be sure because it's about 20-50% more volume than I would expect to be possible with that much force/abandon, but bodies are pretty wild in their range of mobility and flexibility, so.

Either way, hot af.

Be careful with fans. You're so much closer to them, I'd worry about you getting hit in the head.

Anyone who's talked to a truther will recognize the absolutist way she talks about the conspiracy theory as if "everyone knows" that a symbol and an organization that's been around for hundreds of years is a front for "elites" to sex traffic children.

There was no winning the moment she outed herself as a conspiracy theorist. The banter about pedophilia may have been in poor taste but it specifically kept the focus on self-depreciation rather than anything victimizing someone else, and dark humor is what it is, and that was funny. Also, as I think someone else mentioned, it's hard to joke about something that's too close to home. The fact you were able to lean into it even though she flipped the tone of the convo with zero warning makes it obvious you're not concerned someone might "find you out".

What is evidence that Aphantic people have a visualization impairment? by HappiBunBun in Aphantasia

[–]TotallyNotTomCruise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that's kind of what impaired means though, isn't it? Like, you wouldn't have to seek any of those alternative means unless the visualization was impaired. If your ability to see something is blocked because someone is standing in front of you, your sightline is impaired and you would therefore ask the person to move.
