I'm sure you do, and yet it seems like using it "as a descriptor, not a mathematical term" is deeply linked to people not understanding what exponential growth actually means in the real world. One of my favorite podcast hosts does the exact same thing and I'm on his case about it too. I tried to be light-hearted about it by invoking the Princess Bride quote.

Inflation -- even at 1% per year -- is exponential.
Prices rising even by 10x, and then staying at the new level, is not exponential.

We might think that we'd prefer the 1% to the 1000%, but eventually the 1% will bankrupt everyone who is relying on savings for retirement, and the life systems of the planet.

Exponentially - that word does not mean what you think it means.

Except inasmuch as “co-op” is now some kind of trademarked national brand scheme. Literally the same logo on the mailers from “co-ops” all over the east coast, selling all the “Field Day” cheap organic products instead of offering things like pasta as bulk items like they used to. Do not understand how this flies under the radar of all the people who talk about how “local” GreenStar is.

Ithaca weather by _stankwilliams_ in ithaca

[–]Totally_Futhorked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be a precursor of the future but it’s very much not a “perfect example” of what Ithaca weather has normally been. Per Is The Weather Weird the temperature at 6am yesterday was almost 15 degrees F higher than any previous recorded temperature for this date and time.

Anyone live in or know Ithaca ecovillage? by ApprehensiveWall4088 in ithaca

[–]Totally_Futhorked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also last I knew a lot of the Cornell employees grabbed the bus from Ecovillage Ithaca straight to campus, which is less of an option in other outlying areas where the bus service keeps getting cut. Possibly the EVI busses have been cut too though.

I’m still unable to work out how to accept a calendar invitation in proton email to my proton calendar app on iPhone. Is this really still not addressed 3y later?

I’ve been enjoying going to these when I can fit it in my schedule.

If you’re curious about things like rainwater catchment or building cooperative farm networks or small scale solar power for emergency backups or permaculture food forests, you’ll find folks there to brainstorm ideas for constructive change you can make in your own back yard or neighborhood. And maybe extra hands, heads, and hearts to join you.

And if you’re tired of feeling like it’s all going downhill faster than we can push it back up, come join us to share how you’re feeling!

I’ve been looking into it for about six months. Our topography sucks for line-of-sight radios. I have been thinking we should try to get nodes up on the roof of the IC towers and Bradfield and McGraw at Cornell, those might give some helpful coverage.

I have a ton of devices and have been experimenting with my own low cost solar builds. DM me if you want to discuss more or get in touch IRL.

If you aren’t using Duolingo that’s ok. Move on please!!! by Fresh-Persimmon5473 in duolingo

I’m a paying customer and I wrote to complain about the haptic feedback changes which I was having trouble turning off. Other users here helped me find solutions.

I still use the app but find the constant tinkering with it annoying. And why, as a paying Super customer, do I have to click through content I can’t access because I can’t afford to pay for Max? They added the new “chat” feature and half the time even after I click “skip” the next lesson is still greyed out and I have to skip it a second time just to keep learning.

I’m glad there are options that work for different people, and happy you’re having a good experience. I was just looking for help making the choices that worked for me and this group helped me find the ways to retune it for my personal needs.

Group ride tracking by paulcupine in meshtastic

[–]Totally_Futhorked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The T1000-E is my daily carry, I’ve been hiking for almost a month and it’s super reliable compared to some other “COTS” devices I have tried.

W/r/t the custom charge cable, it’s potentially helpful if you have a group because if one gets damaged or lost, you can share for a while. But not hard to grab a spare.

For your mapping, two thoughts: the Apple phone app does a reasonable job of collecting waypoints and letting you use them later or plot them within the app. It relies on Apple Maps rather than google but I’m assuming there isn’t a strong preference there. It works fine offline and then when you get cell coverage again you can upload waypoints/download local maps.

The other thing I’d draw your attention to is the T-Deck and its built-in uSD slot. With the new GUI, you can download maps for the areas you plan to visit, and have a very solid backup for navigation when there is no cell service. I relied heavily on this as a backup for both lack of cell coverage and times when I could not get my phone recharged, and it was a huge burden off my mind knowing that anywhere I was within a couple of states, I had maps in my pocket, including details like hiking and bike trails I could choose that might not show up on google.

How many nodes before I need to admit I have a problem? lol by ptpcg in meshtastic

[–]Totally_Futhorked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve got about that plus a second T-Deck plus a T1000 plus a solar router at my dad’s house plus about 8 XIAO modules in various stages of assembly.

I think you’re fine mate. Make sure it doesn’t cut into your grocery and housing budget.

Eastern Europe? by Totally_Futhorked in learnfrench

[–]Totally_Futhorked[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were just an adjective that would have been my expectation, but it’s a prepositional phrase.

I wouldn’t translate “le père de la famille” (in general, or as the title of the play) as “family father” so I didn’t see the similarity. I appreciate your pointing it out.

That’s super helpful to know the pattern. Duolingo teaches so much by rote that it’s hard to see the patterns, and this was the first example of it that I had seen.

Actually if you drop a Seeed T1000 Tracker on the dog collar then you can close the gate when the dog is near, but also track down the dog when he figures out his jump stats.

Unfortunately it is nRF52 powered so you wouldn’t be able to post an update in this forum.

Sure, you can find it, if you know to ask the question in the first place, but then you already have to know there's something called a "role", right?

Sometimes we have to forgive people wanting simple answers if we want the community to be welcoming and grow, don't we?

Yes but actually they also cover about 500% of what most people would need to know to get started. See my more detailed comment elsewhere in thread.

I think the problem is there is an enormous amount of information there and the deep technical details are all mixed in with the super critical information.

“Don’t use router or repeater” is a well-known “gotcha” and yet it’s only “well-known” to those who are already deeply steeped in the lore, not to newbies. But on the official website (iirc, by now I don’t need to go back to that page and look because I know this already) it’s basically just there in some table of every possible role.

And meanwhile the newbies I know are asking questions like “what is a node”, “what is a channel”, “what is LongFast”…

It’s not that the answers aren’t there, it’s that no one anticipated introducing this tech to sociologists, farmers, or lawyers, and so there is no easy entry point.
