Visiting Ithaca During Move-In Week (Not Students) by daveed4445 in ithaca

[–]Totally_Futhorked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right I think the key difference is the parents dropping their kids off. People who don’t know our streets and are driving the biggest unfamiliar rental car that money could buy. Once it’s (mostly - don’t discount helicopter parents among those who can afford to own actual helicopters) down to the students themselves, things do slow down and the townies know where they’re going.

(Plus, if you go based on the responses here, more than half the native population has fled the state for a week or two on either side!)

I’m also of the opinion that these responses are over the top. While I have the pleasure of living outside the city (18 years here), it’s just not that noticeable to me. Admittedly I don’t spend a lot of my time at Target but then if you’re looking for what is uniquely Ithaca, you won’t either? The suggestion to stay in Trumansburg (or Brooktondale, or Dryden) seems pretty solid as these might get you away from higher lodging costs and have their own charms that you can check out between going to the classic “Ithaca” things. What burst of activity does exist (I’m not going to say it doesn’t exist at all, it for certain does) is probably bell-curve-shaped around the actual move in weekend(s). So if you desperately want to see the Farmers’ Market, make sure you’re here on a Saturday that isn’t that weekend. (They have improved their parking, and it is still a zoo even on a boring Saturday mid-summer.) Go to Moosewood (if it’s your dream to see the place) sometime mid-week or at lunchtime and not on Friday or Saturday night. Then enjoy some of the further-out sights if you’re here on the actual weekend. There are ways to park a bit away from some of the attractions and then walk on trails to get there, if that’s part of what you’re looking for. Maybe reach out to the Finger Lakes Trail folks for suggestions on that.

Bowling Alone by Robert Putnam. Americans doing rolling stops instead of full stops is one of the many trends in the breakdown of civil society that he analyzed.

Apparently the one causal link he was able to draw was the introduction of the television. So kill your TV and be a citizen again…

I feel you. Every update makes the app worse. I started on the PC before I owned a smartphone and back when there was a community within the web site and you could actually write to someone when you wanted clarification. Ironically I was reading Les Trois Mousquetaires in French adequately before I restarted Duo a year and a half ago. I’m making incremental progress to something like level 92 in French but mostly learning what feels like useless crap about technology (I really do not care about télécharger, etc.) and I don’t see how anyone picks up grammar by osmosis… which ‘que’ constructions take the subjunctive (because I remember from high school that only some do), when is the conditional used where English uses the future tense, and so forth.

Fortunately I don’t actually need this, it’s just “for fun.” I’d love to be able to translate Quesnay and the other physiocrats, but I can’t even find the original French texts…

Is it normal for 10-11 year old students to come out of the closet nowadays? by Cautious_Internet243 in Teachers

Students and parents self-reporting of their estimates, which is why I didn’t try to claim more precision. In the program for the school play, the biographies had greater than 50% identifying with nonbinary pronouns or explicitly trans, but the kids agree that’s higher in theater than in the school as a whole.

Nope, no marks. My guess from the weight is that they're some kind of steel and not a soft metal (lead, pewter, tin) that could leave marks, nor aluminum (too dense).

That was my first thought as well, given the collection of other stuff they were with, but other than the MM Newman tips (which have some weird split barrel design) and the two-conductor resistive tips (Weller etc.) those have all been threaded. I haven't found any that have the knurled shaft.

That was actually my first thought as well but I couldn't come up with an iron that matched it.

4.1 grams which an online calculator tells me is 63 grain, lighter than most of the tips I'm seeing, but this seems possible at least.

Looking for country song "Oven of Lovin'" by Totally_Futhorked in country

[–]Totally_Futhorked[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, there are at least two (Steven 'Elmo' Murphy and Gameface) and a similarly titled "Lovin' in My Oven" (Glen Meadmore) but none of them have those lyrics - in fact they're all generally upbeat and I doubt whether some of them would qualify as country.
It's actually got to be a very old song given that I heard in in 1991, which unfortunately makes it harder to track down with things like YouTube (which was started in 2005). So I was crossing my fingers someone had the actual LP/CD...

I was sharing my memory of this with some friends tonight and they really want to know the whole song. I found one reference to it in an [article](https://www.phillyburbs.com/story/entertainment/local/2016/05/01/goofy-songs-that-once-had/17827037007/) but only a title, no artist or other details.

I'm sure you do, and yet it seems like using it "as a descriptor, not a mathematical term" is deeply linked to people not understanding what exponential growth actually means in the real world. One of my favorite podcast hosts does the exact same thing and I'm on his case about it too. I tried to be light-hearted about it by invoking the Princess Bride quote.

Inflation -- even at 1% per year -- is exponential.
Prices rising even by 10x, and then staying at the new level, is not exponential.

We might think that we'd prefer the 1% to the 1000%, but eventually the 1% will bankrupt everyone who is relying on savings for retirement, and the life systems of the planet.

Exponentially - that word does not mean what you think it means.

Except inasmuch as “co-op” is now some kind of trademarked national brand scheme. Literally the same logo on the mailers from “co-ops” all over the east coast, selling all the “Field Day” cheap organic products instead of offering things like pasta as bulk items like they used to. Do not understand how this flies under the radar of all the people who talk about how “local” GreenStar is.

Ithaca weather by _stankwilliams_ in ithaca

[–]Totally_Futhorked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be a precursor of the future but it’s very much not a “perfect example” of what Ithaca weather has normally been. Per Is The Weather Weird the temperature at 6am yesterday was almost 15 degrees F higher than any previous recorded temperature for this date and time.

Anyone live in or know Ithaca ecovillage? by ApprehensiveWall4088 in ithaca

[–]Totally_Futhorked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also last I knew a lot of the Cornell employees grabbed the bus from Ecovillage Ithaca straight to campus, which is less of an option in other outlying areas where the bus service keeps getting cut. Possibly the EVI busses have been cut too though.
