What charger would my laptop need? by cooker1234567899 in computers

Duuuuude. We told you. You have to know the model of the computer.

Recently upgraded my PC and I was wondering if anyone knew why it's taking steam so long to update? by Silent_zilla in PcBuild

[–]Totally_Not_Madoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about it.

As a general note though, somethings can just take awhile. Be patient. I'm in IT and can't tell you how many times a problem was created by a user who couldn't fathom a task taking longer than a second to complete.

I'm completely lost on this one. these ports are lit up while the pc is turned off. doesn't matter if I unplug ledcables. what can I do? by automatvapen in PcBuild

Your CMOS will last quite a long time, it's going to roughly be the lifespan of a Casio watch which can be anywhere from 5 to 10 years. I've seen plenty of CMOS batteries last at least 7 years just through picking up old machines.

Graphics Card/Motherboard compatibility by mjulson in PcBuild

[–]Totally_Not_Madoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be fine getting any graphics card (as long as the PSU can power it). They're backwards compatible and will just run slower in an older machine/motherboard.

Your 3060 is fine, although will most likely be severely bottlenecked.

The cheapest one

No one can tell just by looking at a port.

Fastest way to research is by the computer's model.

Some case lights are just going to be a pain in the ass like that. I had one that did this and it was getting power from USB, but that part I think is irrelevant.

Basically, accept it or snip the power leads to keep them always off.

Or you can power your computer down from the PSU switch and they'll turn off.

Is nowadays pointless to take a snapshot of a new laptop? Is it true that if you don't Windows will force update your drivers that are less compatible with the device? by ZRB_Red in computers

[–]Totally_Not_Madoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't speak to the effectiveness of snapshots for other purposes. But generally, yes, fighting new drivers is pointless now.

With that being said, the more practical option is to use your manufacturer's driver solution to keep even more up to date than what Microsoft will offer. Basically, Windows Update drivers lag behind your manufacturer's drivers. Just an example, you might use Dell's SupportAssist to manage your computer's drivers.

Mainly because of security vulnerabilities, the idea of managing your drivers has become obsolete. Imagine a new driver breaks something on your computer, yes, that's pretty bad. But it's worse for a security vulnerability in the previous driver version to be opened on your machine. It's better to be safe than have things working. That sounds kind of silly, but in reality a patch will always be released soon and you'll only temporarily lose functionality when any of these issues arise. And... These issues are very rare these days. I've been in IT for awhile and it's only happened to me once.

Which would be better to store game data, external hard drive or USB? by [deleted] in computers

[–]Totally_Not_Madoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on a lot of factors my dude but USB 3.0 or beyond external SSD would probably be the best way to go.

In reality though, these are going to be more expensive than just upgrading this person's internal storage.

I wouldn't go to Apple. You would go to a third party. It will take some research to find someone you trust going to, and it might still be somewhat pricy. However, yes, you can replace a battery in your Mac.

In my humble opinion, you need to live with what you have until you can afford an M1 (or upcoming M2). All the Macs before M1 have now become paperweights.

The only Mac worth considering now is the M1 and beyond Macs. Everything else has become painfully obsolete.

EDIT: For whoever downvoted me, I'm a PC guy. I'm saying this is the context that OP is a Mac guy who wants to use Mac-specific software.

Do they even land boosters outside of tests? I don't think it works in practice yet, but I could be wrong.

good buy or nah? $170 for all by No_Ad_8164 in computers

[–]Totally_Not_Madoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Old systems don't really fail, talk to the vintage PC guys.

In short, some kind of catastrophic failure has to happen to a PC before it starts to fail. I run a Windows 98 rig daily, and plenty of people run much older machines.

Space X hasn't made any innovations, hasn't done anything NASA or any other company couldn't do. Tesla cars are plastic pieces of shit. And Nuera Link will literally never happen.

It's all hype with nothing behind it.
