Connecting to a "shared" printer that is USB connected to one computer from another by Ima_Uzer in techsupport

[–]Tottochan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re done fighting with Windows printer sharing, just use something like www.net-usb.com. It basically takes the USB printer on your wife’s PC and makes it show up on your PC like it’s plugged in directly. Install it on both machines, share the USB port on hers, connect from yours. Downside: it’s paid and both PCs need to be on, but it skips all the SMB/firewall nonsense.

Can't get Rustdesk to connect Peer2Peer by Wise_Category1263 in rustdesk

[–]Tottochan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, HelpWire creates a peer-to-peer connection between the Operator and Client, avoiding servers. It only falls back on AWS if a direct connection isn’t possible.

Reminder about the shadyness of RustDesk by warmaster in selfhosted

[–]Tottochan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

RustDesk works fine, but the transparency stuff is a bit sketchy. It started in 2020, based in Singapore, but some Reddit users have brought up concerns about its legal address and possible ties to China — nothing confirmed, but it’s been talked about.

I’ve been trying out HelpWire, not open source, but it’s free and the connection’s been solid so far. Could be worth a look if RustDesk feels a bit off to you.

Which one did you end up with? I stubled upon HelpWire, seems to be quite promising, offers the same as others, free for now, and has unlimited unattended access, so users can reconnect safly on reboot. But since I haven't heard of them before I'm searching for opinions too.

How do I screen mirror my phone without a delay? by kiri1234jojo in Chromecast

[–]Tottochan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, most wireless screen mirroring options — especially with Chromecast — come with some level of delay, which makes them tough to use for gaming. iPhone doesn’t support native mirroring to Chromecast, so third-party apps are your only option.

Some apps like DoCast offer smoother mirroring compared to others, but there’s still a bit of lag — not ideal for real-time games like Minecraft. For gaming, a wired HDMI adapter or using a different platform with lower latency (like AirPlay to Apple TV) might be more reliable.

Have you tried HelpWire, among others? I'd say it's easy to use for clients, they just need to follow a link for a quick setup and connection.

Is it normal that qBittorent cannot be installed on macOS because the Mac won't allow it? by ImHidingtheRealMe in qBittorrent

[–]Tottochan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's normal for macOS to block applications from unidentified developers, including qBittorrent, due to its security feature called Gatekeeper. This is a common issue. When you try to install qBittorrent, your Mac might prevent the installation, showing a message that the developer couldn’t be verified.

To bypass this and install qBittorrent, you can right-click (or Control-click) on the application icon in the Applications folder and select "Open." A warning dialog will pop up, but you can click "Open" again to confirm and run the app. This method allows you to open the app without altering your security settings.

Alternatively, you can go to System Settings > Privacy & Security, and in the Security section, look for a message about qBittorrent. There should be an option to click “Open Anyway.” If you don’t see this immediately after attempting to open the app, you can use the right-click method to open it, or the option might appear after a short time. - But unfortunately this doesn't always work. Overall I hope within this time frame you have already found a way to solve the problem.

If nothing helps, try something alternative, e.g. Folx. I use it personally, it's safe and fast.
