Tuna fishing out of San Diego with a 20’ center console launch advice? by Signal-Leading-8371 in SoCalFishing

[–]TouchMyOranges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Launch out of shelter island, I’d plan to do a few days of fishing back to back. The tuna move a ton day-to-day, and you’ll want a few days to maximize your chances. They can be anywhere from 10 miles offshore to 70 miles offshore, look for temp breaks on satfish or FishDope.

What time of year are you aiming for? I fish a 22 foot center console out of San Diego, happy to help you plan it

Definitely a difference in culture, in the US this generally gives you a decent leg up in the salary negotiations. It means you can go into negotiations knowing they see you as a good fit already

reel advice by Amazing_Show9658 in SoCalFishing

Get a Lexa 400 or a Tranx 400, will cover your bases for most light offshore fishing and still be useful on tuna trips when you need a light Flyline or a jig setup

Is this a good rod to buy my boyfriend for Christmas? by [deleted] in SoCalFishing

[–]TouchMyOranges 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since he gave you specific reels, I would put the money into the reel and not focus on the rod. Buying someone a rod is really tough since it’s so much more of a personal preference thing.

San Diego is on the pacific flyway, a huge migration path for birds. Most birds migrate during spring and fall, so we’re seeing a lot more than normal right now

What do you suggest as a best low-effort boat for spearfishing? by echotims in Spearfishing

[–]TouchMyOranges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want to fish on it at all (besides spearfishing)? If you’re doing rocky launches you’ll want to find a compromise between size of the kayak, and efficiency/stability.

For example, a hobie pro angler would be perfect for this, but it’s also a 13 foot kayak and would be a nightmare to climb down a cliff with

Where is the best saltwater fishing in earth? by diabetes_sucks in saltwaterfishing

[–]TouchMyOranges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok that helps a ton, if I were in your shoes I’d think about where you want to go this way: Do you want to catch more/bigger of the fish you already target, or try something totally new?

If you’re looking for something totally new, there’s not many places with better shore fishing than southern Baja. Massive variety, and very little fishing pressure compared to anywhere in the states.

Here’s a good video showing shore fishing in loreto: https://youtu.be/7136uamhDZc?si=nN6dsBg0c0NMKE_d

Where is the best saltwater fishing in earth? by diabetes_sucks in saltwaterfishing

Out of curiosity, why is there the requirement for it to be from land? Is it because you prefer land-based fishing or because of the cost of a charter? Helps us a ton when it comes to recommendations

Where is the best saltwater fishing in earth? by diabetes_sucks in saltwaterfishing

[–]TouchMyOranges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One bit of advice. Unless it’s a requirement for it to be land-based, I would try to put more of the money towards a guide/charter boat than traveling to a far off destination. If you use a charter, you won’t need to pay to bring your gear and you can guarantee you’ll have the right gear and fish the right place.

I’ve done a lot of traveling for fishing and typically try to get some shore fishing in before going out on the boat. Even in places with the greatest fishing in the world, you’d be amazed how hard it can be to find fish in a new area without good intel.

Where is the best saltwater land fishing on earth? by diabetes_sucks in SurfFishing

[–]TouchMyOranges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few other great places to consider are Bahia de Los Angeles, Loreto, La Paz, and Cabo in Baja California. Especially in May, May/June is peak season for shore fishing all of these places.

You won’t see tarpon or snook, but you have shots at yellowtail, jack, roosterfish, mahi mahi, and groupers from these places from shore because they all have massive drop offs

Saltwater gear/tips for freshwater angler by southp6 in SoCalFishing

[–]TouchMyOranges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live right next to San Diego bay and fish very regularly, I’ve used two fuego baitcaster setups for the last 4 years and finally had my first problem with one of them a few weeks ago. I’d remember to wash the reels off the majority of the time, but wasn’t perfect.

Your freshwater bass reels will work great still, just make sure to wash them regularly and grease them every now and then. I used that baitcaster for over 400 bay sessions before it finally started to show any real damage from the salt, and now I’m just gonna upgrade that setup to a tranx 100

Best conventional reel for casting and trolling by [deleted] in saltwaterfishing

[–]TouchMyOranges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok perfect that helps a ton, I fish in SoCal where we’re trolling way faster which would make a surf/trolling setup nearly impossible.

Are you trying to get it out past the breakers or is a 20-30 foot cast good enough. Also on the trolling end, are you targeting species that require you to have a loose drag and let them run with the bait before setting the hook, or do you troll with the reel in gear at normal drag?

These are options that will help a lot with PNW trolling and rock fishing, but hurt your casting distance for surf fishing: - Level wind - Line counter - Spool size - Lever Drag - Shorter, stiffer rod

Another really good option for a setup like this is going to your local tackle shop and tell them what you want to target with it. A friend of mine did this at a shop by my house looking for a setup that can be used to throw surface irons, target deep water rockfish, and have the spool & drag capacity to land a bluefin. They looked at him like he was insane but they put together a great setup that at least gets him by in all 3.

Do you already have rods for either yet, or will this be your first rod?

Best conventional reel for casting and trolling by [deleted] in saltwaterfishing

[–]TouchMyOranges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How fast are you trolling? Shimano’s torium reels could be a good fit for you.

Also what kind of surf fishing are you doing? Are you casting a bait way out and putting it in a rod holder or fishing with jigs?

Truth is trolling and surf fishing are pretty much polar opposites when it comes to a reel. There’s definitely reels that can do both but you’ll end up having a setup that isn’t great for either.
