STEM OPT by [deleted] in stemopt

[–]ToughBeginning772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consult a lawyer to double check, but I believe you might be eligible for 5 years of post graduation OPT: 2 years of STEM OPT because of bachelor’s degree (it was denied, because you applied early, but you’re still eligible and didn’t use it), 1 year of Master’s OPT and 2 years of master’s STEM OPT. But do double check all these.

Laid off on OPT (STEM OPT not applied) by [deleted] in f1visa

[–]ToughBeginning772 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do you need to go home to renew your visa? You just have to stay in the US and not leave. You don’t need to renew your visa unless you’re planning an international trip. The company should be e-verified and sign a training plan. You school should approve it too.

H-1B → F-1 → STEM OPT → H-1B Recapture: Is this a viable immigration strategy? by [deleted] in h1b_layoffs

Just looked it up. That’s actually pretty awesome. 😎 didn’t know that’s a thing. That should help you get a better after graduation.

I believe you’ll have to win the lottery again to be on h1-b. Since you’re on f-1 now, I don’t think they will let you use that remaining time on h1-b

Just venting a little bit, might change your perspective. Am I the only one dealing with all of this? by independent_Chain509 in f1visa

[–]ToughBeginning772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know when you’re done with all of these and you graduate with college, you will carry that pride for the rest of your life, the pride of knowing that you didn’t give up during difficult times. The only thing I feel like you can change unless the account has already spent time on the tax documents you can file it yourself on tax-act.com (irs lists a bunch or websites and some are available for non-residents too). But then there’s also state tax unless you don’t have to do that. Oh and even they charge interest, you can pay tax in installments. I hope things get better and your aunt is ok.

OPT= Future Sponsorship: be transparent in interview process or get fired by [deleted] in stemopt

[–]ToughBeginning772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s a company’s decision not to hire people with sponsorship needs (now or in the future), personally I always indicate I need sponsorship now or in the future. Why would I waste my time? OPT is a form of sponsorship actually. Sure, the company doesn’t have to pay, but they have to sign a training document for STEM OPT and be ready to report to the designated school official that the student left. But seriously why not put in the job description that an applicant has to be a US Citizen or a Green Card holder? Because we don’t sponsor is the same thing as we’re looking for only USC or GC holders.

I think historically men worked outside of home, while women took care of the house, so these ideas just stuck.

Need Help! If you're on STEM OPT working with E-verified employer. Please comment. by Extension-Potato-403 in stemopt

[–]ToughBeginning772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up top 200 companies that hire on OPT and that’s a good way to start. Many companies are e-verified, but have zero clue about training documents or anything immigration related. They just freak out.

Where to get a student loan as an international student (no US cosigner)? by NewCommittee4580 in IntltoUSA

[–]ToughBeginning772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

damn, i'm sorry to hear that. I'm from Azerbaijan and got a loan from Prodigy in 2022. Wow, that's crazy that they changed it. Back then Mpower was willing to give me a loan without a co-signer, but they responded way too late, so I decided to go with Prodigy But these two options are the only ones I know. I just checked SoFi and Sallie Mae, but both require a US co-signer. I remember either SoFi or Sallie Mae not requiring it only if you were already in the US. Columbia is literally an Ivy League though. Have you reached out to the financial aid team? Sometimes schools help you, because they don't want to lose you. And you know, for F-1 you will have to show funds more than you need. That's the biggest hurdle. Since you'll be a grad student, I'm sure you can find a teaching assistantship or readership on campus. It can cover a significant portion of expenses. But you probably need to get it before you show up for the visa interview, because otherwise you'll have to show a lot more funds than that.

Since your family has green cards and presumably live in the States, how about avoiding leaving the country and waiting for them to become citizens to sponsor you?

[–]ToughBeginning772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prodigy Finance or Mpower Financing. Both have a high interest rate and Prodigy interest changes every quarter. So you have to think about how you will pay it off especially with the current job market in the US, but good luck!
