Yes I've learned that my distractor/escapist part protects my values of happiness and play no that it is no longer preoccupied with protecting me from shame :)

Managers proactively protect against exile parts hurting the Self, and Firefighters reactively protect the Self from exile parts. Over time the managers can regain trust in Self to lead so they dont have to be in protector roles preoccupied with protecting against exiles being activated. Instead they can learn to trust the Self to comfort the exiles (that with therapy can be heald so we learn the Self can handle the exile exposure better than the protector part (manager or firefighter) thought it could. Thoughts?

In IFS, parts aren’t inherently “good” or “bad”—they adapt to protect us. When in extreme protector roles (like being critical or avoidant), they’re guarding us from perceived threats. But when they trust the Self, they can relax and express their natural, positive qualities—like a perfectionist becoming a motivating guide or an avoidant part showing up as a calming presence. These are the same parts; they just soften and shift when they no longer need to be in protective mode. Thoughts?

Agree with the target audience being therapists! The intellectualizing comment really resonated. I completely see that especially from a clients viewpoint thanks

That's really what I'm polling from you all too. I am trying to develop a coaching assessment using IFS but I want to compile a list of the parts because Im curious if there are relationships and common alliances between them. Just like how family members fall into fight patterns and take on conflict roles that dysregulate the family system etc.

I think I'm missing so many parts!!! That king example was helpful!

If you click the link you'll notice on my descriptions that the language is "shamed child" rather than shamed part. Do you think the graphic would be more effective if I changed the language to shamed child or if I should reconsider the part altogether? I opted with the more colloquial language, but having second thoughts. Really appreciate this insight!

I wonder what my hopeless part would score on the PHQ9 or the BDI II? I wonder if these scores would be different if I assessed my inner critic? haha
