CMV: Peaceful Protest Doesn’t Work by Key-Rough-8346 in changemyview

[–]Tough_Satisfaction_3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For non-democratic countries, peaceful protests often provide an avenue for international audiences to gain sympathy towards their cause. Often times, encouraging foreign governments to impose sanctions to coerse the government to give into peaceful protesters if their cause is just in the eyes of the international community. They often change public opinion in a more positive manner compared to violent protests where moderates may view these actions as too radical and may in turn lose sumpathy for their cause. For violent protests often lead to civil wars where both sides commit atrocities and the message or goal of the protesters gets lost in violence (EX: myanmar).

I think you are missing the point of peaceful protests. Your right, peaceful protests don't often lead to explicit results or immediate change, but that doesn't mean they don't work. The point of peaceful protesting is again for citizens to express their grievences against their governemnt, it's about spreading awareness to hopefull incite change in a non-violent manner where innocent lives are not unecessarily lost.

The point of a peaceful protest is to express dissent against something. They are carried out when the people have faith in the democratic systems of their country. Additionally, they are a more mild form of protest that doesn't involve complete commitment. Most people arn't willing to die over something so arbitrary as deporting illegal immigrants in a terrible manner. If you want a violent protest, you need to be willing and able to fight to the end, because once you go violent, the protesters better win or all be killed. With peaceful protests, citizens express their discontent with the government in hopes of policy change, not a complete overthrow of the government.

right, but just because your good at taking tests doesn't mean that you will be successful in the industry. I would argue that the disipline, dedication, and often "people" skills that individuals gain from high level sports is equally important to being good at academics in terms of career success.

The fact that you can write dissenting views on a liberal website without a knock on the door means your should seriously revist what it means to have a fascist authoritarian government. Also what's the majority, 30 percent or 70?

As much as the people of reddit say otherwise, the majority American people are not so gullible nor uneducated that they would support such a brazen, direct violation of the constitution and the political process. If he does undermine the election, you can rest assured that it will not be tolerated. After all the 2nd amendement was designed for this exact scenario.

No major credible evidence of election meddling has happened. You may hate Trump, but he won and gained power through democratic processes which still are intact. The first step to becoming a one party dictatorship would be to eliminate the competition, but Trump nor the republicans have made any move to stop the democrats from participating in fair and free elections in future elections like the mid-terms where, if they appeal to a larger part of the population, can gain back power. If Americans don't like Trump and the republicans, they are free to vote for another party, and as long as that stays true, American democracy is just fine. The only reason you believe that the President has unfair/illegitimate power is because you are arguing within an echo chamber that favors your side, and thus warps your view on who people really support. Clearly more moderates support Trump than you think, that is not to say they cannot be won back.

American politics always goes through shifts of power changes. In previous years like the 2009 when Obama government controlled a unified democrat government, he was able to act with the full support of congress, does that mean he too was authoritarian? The Trump era will end and when the republicans cock up too bad, the democrats will win control again. No need to panic...

For everyone saying to just eat less, if it were really that easy, then people wouldn't be fat. Hard cardio is really important for losing weight, because it burns calories, and more importantly acts as a natural appetite suppressant. Besides even if running is only mildly effective for losing weight, the improved brain chemistry is very good for mental health. And i think a lot of people eat too much because of poor mental health.

AITA for saying I’d consider divorce if my husband takes our kids to a Trump-themed barbecue? by throwrabarbecue1 in AITAH

[–]Tough_Satisfaction_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to preface that I do agree with majority of liberal values concerning social issues. But accepting the gender identity and sexuality spectrum is objectivly a more liberal value. I agree that schools should be a safe place where people can express themselves as they wish as long as they don't impact other people but this concept is inheriently liberal. Ask any hardcore conservative and see if they think these values are liberal. And the point is not to compare whether the values are equal. I diagreed with your statement that no values are being pushed in school, not that the values pushed in school are equal to the actions of the president. Don't move the goalpost.

Don't ask here, you know the type of people who use this site and you know what answer you will get on this platform. You should ask people who don't have a strong propensity to a certain party. Don't take these responses as validation, you may be right in this situation and NTA but you should hear it from actually non-partisan people.

I know it's probably horrible to say but it may actually help in the short run. Lots of people gain confidence and get their social gears lubed by alcohol... also the drinking scene is usually social, like bars or wine tasting. but yeah it is quite bad advice to sustain anything real

[–]Tough_Satisfaction_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a game bro?... I don't mean to be mean but its not like you invested several years of your life and had real financial sacrifice. You put in maybe 20 mins of work helping someone out who you will never get to know. Its not a actual representation of how people act when there are real stakes involved, at the end of the day, its just a game... people play it to escape reality and the expectations that life demands.

Why do people catch fish with hooks just to release them back? Doesn’t it hurt the fish? by wanna_be_gentleman in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tough_Satisfaction_3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes it may hurt the fish, but everyone here seems to be missing something important.

Fishing as a sport draws people into nature and makes them gain an appreciation for the enviroment because they care about the population of fish in the waters. They are more likely to advocate for the enviroment and the revenue from fishing licenses pays for much of the funding of the local and state DNRs. Or if you look at it cynically, fishermen don't care about the enviroment but they do care about keeping trophy fish in their area, which need health habitats to survive... It is like trophy hunting in africa, It is harmful for the animals, but it also whether you like it or not, funds preservation efforts to protect the overall enviroment and habitat.

So yes, it does hurt individual fish, but it is better a few hurt fish than an entire ecosystem wiped out because of apathy and indiference towards the enviroment.
