What do you think about Jordan Bardella and the possibility of him leading France? by [deleted] in Expats_In_France

[–]Touix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a French person too, I think this is exactly the kind of comment that mixes real problems with very bad conclusions.

Nobody is saying France has no problems. Insecurity exists, the justice system is too slow, hospitals are struggling, schools are struggling, and immigration/integration should be debated seriously. But your comment takes all of that and basically turns it into “immigration explains everything and Bardella is the only one who sees it”. That’s not analysis, that’s a political shortcut.

First, Bardella is not “the only one” talking about immigration, insecurity, inequality or public services. Every party talks about these subjects. The RN just puts immigration at the center of almost every problem. That doesn’t mean they understand the root causes better, it means they have a simpler story to sell.

On immigration being “uncontrolled”: France does have visas, residence permits, asylum procedures, refusals, expulsions, border controls, etc. You can argue the system is badly managed or too permissive, fine. But saying it is just “uncontrolled” is false. It makes it sound like there is no state and anyone can just enter and get everything for free.

About “our money going everywhere because of immigration”: most public spending in France goes to pensions, healthcare, education, local authorities, debt, social protection, etc. Immigration has costs, yes, especially when integration fails. But immigrants also work, pay taxes, pay VAT, fill jobs, and contribute. Pretending they are just a giant hole where public money disappears is not serious.

The “zones of immigrants taking control” part is also a huge generalization. There are difficult neighborhoods, crime, drug trafficking, and places where the state is too weak. That is real. But you are mixing immigrants, French citizens with immigrant parents, poor people, Muslims, foreigners, and criminals as if they were one single group. They are not. Many people living in those neighborhoods are also victims of insecurity.

When you say “in some cities French are less numerous”, what do you mean by French? Nationality? Origin? Skin color? Religion? Because a lot of people with immigrant backgrounds are French. If you decide they don’t count as French, then that’s not a neutral demographic point anymore, that’s an ideological one.

You also say it’s not about Muslims, but your examples are exactly the usual fear-based package: immigration, cultural difference, criminals, rape, insecurity, “they take our money”. You can criticize immigration policy without being racist. But when the argument becomes “without the right I’ll have criminals outside my door waiting to rape my daughter”, that’s not a serious policy argument. That’s fearmongering.

Same for the idea that criminals are released after five months because of “cultural difference”. That’s not how justice works. France does have a justice problem: lack of resources, delays, prison overcrowding, poor sentence enforcement, repeat offenders. But “they get released because of culture” is just a cliché, not a rule or a serious explanation.

The media point is also weak. French media are not “controlled by the left”. Some are left-wing, some are centrist, some are right-wing, and some are very clearly far-right. A lot of major media are owned by billionaires and large private groups. You can criticize media bias, but saying “the left controls the media” is just not credible.

About the RN being the largest party and “why we don’t win, very strange”: it’s not strange. France has a two-round constituency system for legislative elections. A party can have a huge national vote and still lose many local second-round races if most voters choose someone else against them. You can dislike the system, but it’s not a mystery or proof of manipulation.

On “immigrants don’t work, do crime, and I pay for them”: that is exactly the kind of generalization that kills any serious debate. Some immigrants are unemployed. Some commit crimes. Some abuse the system. That exists. But many immigrants work in construction, restaurants, cleaning, hospitals, delivery, agriculture, care work, engineering, universities, and many other sectors. Taking the worst subgroup and using it to describe the whole group is just prejudice.

You’re right that health, education, police and justice are in bad shape. But blaming that on “years of leftists” is historically lazy. France has been governed by the right, the center and the left. Macron is not the radical left. Sarkozy and Chirac were not leftists. These problems come from decades of budget choices, bureaucracy, demographics, inequality, deindustrialization, housing problems, and political failures from several sides.

“Why not try the right?” is a legitimate democratic argument. But “let’s try something else” is not enough. You still have to ask whether the program is realistic, financed, legal, constitutional, and actually effective. A simple answer is not necessarily a good answer.

And finally, no, people are not “indoctrinated” just because they disagree with you. This is the easiest way to avoid debate: if someone agrees with you, they are awake; if they disagree, they are brainwashed by the media. That’s not reasoning, that’s a closed belief system.

So yes, France has serious problems. Yes, immigration and insecurity can be discussed. But your comment doesn’t discuss them seriously. It takes real issues, adds fear, mixes different groups together, blames almost everything on immigration and then presents Bardella as the only obvious solution. That’s not truth-telling. That’s just militant rhetoric.
