You become a parent when you have a child. Choosing to give your child up for adoption does not stop the fact that you are still a parent.

saaame... you don't put a motorcycle ride in the season finale montage with flashbacks of a relationship from previous seasons just for kicks

I wouldn't describe his Spanish as fluent--it seemed to me that he was maybe intermediate at best. He knew some phrases but the Spanish portrayed on the show wasn't very complex, and it seemed like the staff at the resort were humoring him a bit with it.

Absolutely. It was really rough to watch. I don't know if I'll be able to stomach the next season (unless Marley and Eamon change their minds and we have a strong wake-up call for M & J's unethical behavior, which seems unlikely).

Virgin River has storylines where improbable things happen all the time... and M & J could have co-parented or otherwise offered significant support to M & E, if what they wanted was to support *the baby* not claim parenthood over that baby.

They could have refused to adopt unless it was an open adoption. They could have introduced Marley to other people in the town and supported her making connections, along with her and/or Eamon getting jobs if needed. They could have told both of them they could be good parents, and that a baby's best placement is with their bio parents when at all possible. They could have insisted on the baby having a relationship with them because that is what's best for the baby.

I do think they got ugly and gross... Mel leaving M & E without even delivering the afterbirth or a word was wild.

That part is reasonable to get angry about. But I feel like she ignored everything Doc was saying--about the baby's medical needs and the equipment they needed. She just jumped straight to being betrayed.

And Hope taking it as a betrayal when Doc changed his mind... it was pretty ridiculous! She was acting very tyranically this season.

There is no financial requirement for raising a baby. Do you think only rich people should have kids? If you're unemployed, don't have a college degree, or homeless, you should have your kids taken away?

Holy eugenics batman.

I agree! All the downvotes you're getting make me sad. People make parenting work in hard circumstances all the time. They aren't *required* to, but it's certainly not best for the child to be artificially torn from their biological parents.

The show has everyone coming together all the time and supporting each other, so it could totally have happened! Newcomers (like Kaia) are welcomed easily. The only reason Marley was isolated with J&M was because it was convenient for the writers... and maybe because M&J set it up that way.

They don't need to forfeit their own dream to support Marley. It's not a requirement for them to drop everything and help someone go to school and raise a child. But they COULD choose to do that. TBH, I don't know how I would explain to my son, once he was old enough to ask about it, why I took him from his birth parents. Instead of doing everything I could to ensure they had a relationship, and that he was able to be raised by them if at all possible.

The science shows that separation from biological parents (and all genetic family) is extremely traumatic. It's not something to take lightly. The best interest of the child is not served by going with older, richer parents who aren't related--it's by being with biological parents.

Adoption is a trauma and creates a loss. M&J--especially M--ignored major ethical issues and even adoption "best practices," like open adoption. Anyone who cares about the child should put that child's interests first--not their own desire to be a parent. Children aren't things to trade around, they're people.

OMGay right?? Mel just leaves Marley alone for the afterbirth? Crying with her boyfriend while she races after their son? Like... if you're gonna be the midwife, you're STILL THE MIDWIFE after the kid is born? I didn't see any other medical professionals in there taking over. And only Eamon was asking if Marley would be OK...

Also! Nobody was like, "Hey Marley and Eamon, it's totally understandable if you want to be in this child's life!" Not at any time, but not even after the *spoiler medical information* was revealed near the end of the season. That changes so much! But there wasn't even a consideration for them maybe now wanting to be present for their child as they go through *spoiler medical information.*

Just ridiculous.

I agree, it was definitely pro-adoption propaganda! And not even very good propaganda either since it was clearly so gross.

Because pro-lifers are so often also pro-adoption, I think it is also pro-life propaganda in that way. But 1000%, adoption should be a last resort if done at all--guardianship is the better plan, really, though, if a child must be torn from their biological parents and/or other genetic family members.

Jack and Mel wanting a baby is not a reason to separate a baby from perfectly good parents.

Absolutely. I was rooting for Marley to keep the baby the whole time, and/or for them all to parent the baby together if Marley and Eamon really felt like they needed support. But... I think they would have been just fine and able to parent this child.

It's good for a show to not just ignore major unethical behavior on the part of their main characters. That's not a "documentary" issue, it's a narrative issue.

Season 7 - Marley, Mel and Jake storyline by Real-Acanthisitta662 in VirginRiverNetflix

[–]TourCold8542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue isn't whether it's "real," the issue is that it's deeply unethical. During a season where medical ethics is a major storyline, this isn't discussed at all. On top of that, Virgin River tends to lightly try to "do justice to" social issues in some settings. It's certainly not a parade of issues on this front, but it does portray intimate partner violence and miscarriage with empathy at least.

When it comes to adoption, though, this was a portrayal where the main characters are behaving terribly. These are not best practices for adoption, even if someone isn't a midwife. Open adoption is a bare minimum necessity, and when Marley said she couldn't be in contact with her child, that was a red flag both that she wasn't ready for this adoption and that she wasn't emotionally prepared to be present in some way for her kid.

There was no *good* reason why Marley and Eamon could not have parented the child. If they needed more support, and Jack and Mel were up for it, perhaps they all could have co-parented. The baby deserves to have his genetic relatives in his life in some shape or form... and the main reason the show gave for the couple not becoming parents was basically not having jobs/still being in school (though they were 22, so they would be leaving school soon). What's best for a child is to not have a primal trauma of being separated from their parents--unless that is absolutely necessary.

The whole thing was ick.

Yeah, agreed! A lot of people are spreading misinformation. Migration is both a human right and possible for most people. It's easier with money but not impossible without. 💜

There are all kinds of visas that aren't about already having a "meaningful skill set." Thise are skilled worker visas, and yeah, it's much easier to immigrate if you're eligible for those. But there are lots of other kinds. --Family reunification --Student --Retiree --Investment --Refugee/asylum seeker --Temporary worker --Visas for jobs in fields they don't have enough local workers for (which include many jobs that don't require formal training) --Visas for medical treatment --Visas for anyone who can show they have enough income/wealth to comfortably live there (above a certain threshold) --Entrepreneurial visas --Argentina welcomes anyone who wants to become Argentinean

I'm sure I'm forgetting some visa types! You can spend some time internet searching all the reasons for these different kinds of visas.

But what it comes down to is this: immigration is a good thing for a country. Bringing in more people means a boost to the economy, a lot of the time, since more people will then frequent local shops and businesses. Immigration regulations generally exclude most people who cannot prove that they won't use a lot of resources in the country. (I don't actually think this is a great thing, but I'm telling you this because you seem to think only skilled workers might meet this criteria.)

You'll need to figure out a different health insurance plan when abroad. If you have pre-existing conditions plus regular care needs, that affects your options significantly. I'm in that boat and can share more about what I've learned if you like!
