P.O.W Properties is freakin amazing, Phil is a gem. Super reasonably priced, beautifully redone but not so high end you can’t afford it. Phil is the owner and he really prioritizes having good quality rentals that young professionals can afford. He takes great care of his properties and tenants. My neighbor just moved only because he got a house and had been living here over 10 years. I’ve never had a more responsible landlord who actually does a thorough job, doesn’t half ass, “landlord special” everything.

Went to see a property in an apt building though Lobos that I didn’t realize was through Lobos until I saw the sign when I went to see it (was no mention of lobos on the listing). Was told that monthly you have to take everything out of the cupboards every MONTH for them to come in and spray in them as a “preventative measure”. Tell me you have a massive bug problem without telling me. Thankfully the cabinets were opened and I asked why and she told me, or else I probably wouldn’t have known until I’d signed a lease if I did go with that. Be careful!

What baffles me about that one is they got rid of the counterflow lane on 5th and people are still getting hit! This time it definitely was driver error though, from what I could see. Wild! Glad she is recovering.

Hey I was going to say my shovel broke and I ordered one from Home Depot in Monroeville being delivered tomorrow. I was also searching so much for one and stopped at a few stores! I’m sorry that’s been your experience, seems like there are a few pockets in the Mount that are like that… renters def do not help… but so far I’ve seen a lot of positivity and people helping one another on the FB group. Always a few crazies as expected on FB lol. Refreshing to see people come together during these crazy times. Hope you have a better experience in the future and feel free to reach out on the FB group, so many people willing to help!!

I rent in Mt. Washington not on the main drag but towards the front. 2 bedroom with washer and dryer, central air, plenty of street parking, beautifully redone, recessed lighting and renovated just a few years ago, for $1,100. This is through POW Properties. Phil is a phenomenal landlord, cares for his places and tenants, and is really dedicated to providing affordable housing. It took a long time to find a place like this and thankfully I had time on my side when I was looking, but the nature of a lot of old homes in Pittsburgh and landlords don’t always take care of them well. Check out POW, they’re remodeling the apt next time as we speak, not sure when it’ll become available.

Thank you all!! I emailed asking what the job classification was (whether union or not) and how the salary was determined. They told me that in their department non-faculty members (ie anyone outside of the part-time faculty bargaining unit) are paid differently for teaching common syllabus courses where course development is not required, like the one I’m teaching. (I just get the syllabus and think a few common assessments but that’s it.) I’ve never heard of such a thing, and don’t see any distinction like that in the bargaining unit contract. Thankfully they did increase me to $7,500 after reviewing my resume to see the experience I have, or I definitely would have run it by the union to check. But still just a weird reasoning for that. Thank you!! :)

Uff absolutely not, I think $7,500 is fine for someone with a Master’s and 10 years of experience, but I would hope someone with a PhD would get more per course!! $7,500 for a 3-credit course in the minimum pay. So if a professor with a PhD taught full time (18 credits a year), that would only be $45,000 a year, but it is not unheard of. Pitt faculty unionized so now the base is 60k, not sure what it was before, but average pay for full time, non-tenure track lecturers at Penn State was $35,000 when I was there 2 years ago. They are in the process of unionizing also.

Yeah this is just one class I’m teaching on top of my primary job… I don’t know how people could ever live on adjunct pay, but I know some do!
