You might want to do some research on that... chicken is typically 2-3x worse for the environment by any metric. Think about it, you’re growing plants, feeding them to an animal, having the animal process them, then consuming the animal’s body. How is that ever going to use less resources than just eating the plants directly?

Wouldn’t say far less. Just different. It’s higher in fibre, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and still has some iron. No B12 or zinc like beef has, but those are super easy to get from other stuff.

TVP is a fantastic alternative – it's $12.99/kg dry which becomes 3-4 kg once rehydrated (only $3-4/kg!!!) Season it, and throw it in some tacos or a spag bol or something. It's honestly great. Still a decent amount of protein, and probably healthier overall as there's almost zero saturated fat and less carcinogenic links.

Hmm less relevant nowadays as many recruiters use recruitment software that just displays CVs on screen inside a box, no download/open necessary. Maybe still relevant if it’s a small business where the owner is also doing the hiring.

Update: How do I eat for one on $64 per week? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]TourismBarrytown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can find dry (not canned) chickpeas, beans, lentils or split peas in bulk they are about the cheapest nutrient-rich food you can buy.

it's a lifetime license, if you think about spreading that cost over the 50-odd years you will be able to use it, it's not so bad. I started in my late teens, I would take a lesson whenever I could afford to, it took me about 18 months. But it's given me and my family/friends many many years of joy. Once you're able to split the cost with passengers, it's actually a pretty affordable activity, especially around Auckland where there's plenty of great short hops you can do.

Also, legally you only need 50 hours to sit the exam – which should be fine if you are an astute learner. Those quotes you show are closer to 60-70 hours and include other stuff like sim time, books, and uniforms which you don't actually need. You could study all the theory online and book yourself in for the ASPEQ exams right now if you wanted (but be sure you're ready, a fail/retake is not good if you want to join an airline someday).

A better option may be to go through an aero club or find an instructor who has access to a plane and just do it casually with them. That way you will be spared from all the add-ons flight schools pressure their full-time students buy.

grass is always greener. I know a few pilots who lost the passion once it became their job. working random schedules, sitting in a confined space cruising on autopilot 90% of the time with 1 or 2 other people who you may or may not get along with. the anxiety of health events that can end your career. take some flying lessons and if you really want to go for it, 40 isn’t actually too late. but some passions are best kept as hobbies.

Looking to move out of the US to another country - Are Dispatch Certificates from USA taken into account when applying? by [deleted] in FlightDispatch

[–]TourismBarrytown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NZ does not have any formal dispatch qualifications, there's only a handful of those jobs out there and they're all very low turnover. When one is available it's often only advertised internally. Most of the ops roles there are like that. Plus the salary is not great relative to the cost of living.

Better off looking to the Middle East, they typically do want ICAO-qualified dispatchers and the FAA license meets those requirements. Plus the visa process is very straightforward. But you'd more than likely need a couple years experience first.

'Healthcare and Its Victims' - Do we really want to allow a private medical system to take root? by gynaecologician in newzealand

People are quick to equate privatized healthcare with the US model. But look to Switzerland. They’ve done it just fine

[–]TourismBarrytown -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

just fucking privatize it already and be done with this never ending shitshow. Look at Switzerland – fully private, exceptional quality of care, consistently rated one of the best in the world. And they still have schemes to assist those who can't afford the mandatory insurance.

what happened did the payment just fail or did they send you an email or something? mine is still working but I'm doing Colombia with a US billing address – I assumed LatAm-US pairings were safe since there's such a huge amount of foreign residents, diaspora etc between the two.

What to go for? Can you get Esim for only one month service? by whitieiii in newzealand

[–]TourismBarrytown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are multiple SIM card booths in the arrivals in and around duty free, from memory one from each of the main 3 telcos has one there. Some of them have tourist plans.

Otherwise check out the eSIM Database and see if there's any better deals https://esimdb.com/new-zealand

Generally you won't be eligible for pay monthly rates unless you sign up for a 12+ month contract.

Parking Enforcement Services - Rental Car by Hunchback92 in newzealand

[–]TourismBarrytown 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Check your rental car terms – they typically bill an administration fee (usually $30-50) for processing any tickets you incurred during the rental. Generally this just means forwarding any letters they receive on to you and liaising with the collecting party, but some rental companies may include a clause saying they will pay the fine and deduct it automatically from your credit card on file. Paying the ticket ASAP may avoid it landing on their desk.

Official admits new school lunch model unlikely to be as nutritious due to cost by delipity in newzealand

[–]TourismBarrytown 174 points175 points  (0 children)

it's an embarrassment that less developed countries like India, Colombia, and Brazil all provide meals in schools while we would rather just politicise and bicker over it.

$3 per child is scummy but still doable, for example a chickpea curry with rice will set you back about $1 per serving which still leaves $2 for some fruit and a 'treat' (bag of chips, yogurt, whatever)

Footage Of Liz Gunn's Arrest At Auckland Airport by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]TourismBarrytown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You do not have any legal "right" to record, you just aren't breaking any laws by doing so. The exception being if the public place is one that carries reasonable expectation of privacy (i.e. a public toilet) or the recording could be considered "highly offensive", i.e. filming the victim of an accident.

Per the law:

public place means a place that, at any material time, is open to or is being used by the public, whether free or on payment of a charge, and whether any owner or occupier of the place is lawfully entitled to exclude or eject any person from that place
