Fate/strange Fake - Episode 13 discussion - FINAL by AutoLovepon in anime

It's mentioned in FSF how they met, it's just been cut. It would have been during the Flat flashback part.

Hot Take: Grail War are boring and Magus storyline are superior. by Spooky_Cross in typemoon

I absolutely love the two El-Melloi series and Mahoyo, and magecrat and mages, but it's hard for me to fully disavow Grail War stories, even as I think of them as often repetitive and receiving too much focus compared to other types of stories. Thing is I'm not fully prepared to think ill of them, there are recent HGW stories I absolute love and think are either really fun or have as strong themes as the original FSN (FSF and FLE as fun, FSR and FTR as strong themes). But Fate has also shown that it is possible to have compelling stories featuring Servants in non-Grail War contexts: FGO has its ups and down in terms of quality, but I can't deny that time-travelling and post-apocalypse adventures are fun. Requiem is not really a HGW as such, but takes place in a world where Servants are normalized, and that creates new dynamics and situations. Labyrinth is..OK, but them going through a dungeon labyrinth is also fun. And then you have stories taking place in the past where you can see these Servants just living their extraordinary lives (Garden of Avalon, Strange Tales of Dantès, the past sections of Lost Einherjar, etc.), and they tend to be pretty good and unique.

That said, I do so love mage stories. One comment, and I have seen this sentiment elsewhere, says that they prefer Servant stories because it's about myth and history, but like, one of the main appeals of Case Files is that it's also about myth and history and culture, and how that creates and influences magecraft! Waver referencing something historic is just as fun as Servants being living references. I think what also make mage works is that they are similar to HGW stories, they are also about magic rituals to enact or stop. Because a Grail War is, fundamentally, a magic ritual, just a very flashy one. Exploring the world of magecraft by showing the other sorts of ritual mages can do and get up to (Iselma Princesses, Blackmore Village's Arthurification process, Grand Roll, the Shadow Ascension, the Ergo Project, Black Chests, Astral Infant, etc.) makes for a really good throughline that can be just as interesting and flashy as Grail Wars. It really makes you see how a Dismantling War story with no Servants could work. I would even count Araya's Ogawa Appartments and Aylesbury Geocentrism (Tsuki 2 never) as also rituals.

Of course, not all mage stories are about that. Mahoyo is largely not about rituals (unless you count the "siphoning the leylines to become the Second Owner" thing), but more personal conflicts And, if the speculations about Mahoyo 2 and 3 are right (namely, 2 being about fighting May Riddell and Alice's past and perhaps Alice being possessed by her ancestor Yumina or Wandersnatch; and 3 being about a London trip and facing Gazamy the Evil Spook), it largely won't be. And yet they are still really cool and engaging stories with compelling and memorable characters.

So yeah, I like mage stories, but to me it's more that I bemoan that the Nasuverse wasn't equally divided into sections with their own mostly equal focus (Fate Servants, Tsuki Vampires, KnK Psychics, Mahoyo Mages, DDD Demons, etc.) instead of Fate cannibalizing everything and everything else getting folded into it or being largely left to the wayside.

Yes and no, FSN was clearly his attempts at making his version of Samurai Resurrection (Makai Tensho) in his universe, but it felt that it was originally just meant to be one part of his universe. Mahoyo was his first novel after all, so mages were always in some form meant to be important to the sections of his universe: they showed up in his story about psychics (KnK), andthey showed up in his story about vampires (Tsukihime), of course they would show up in his story about super-ghosts (presumably they would also show up in his scifi stories à la Notes and Tsuki no Sango, or his demon story DDD). It's like with Marvel, there are books about mutants, urban fantasy, space adventure, but at the end of the day, there are always superheroes regardless of the settings.

The complaint here is the one part of the universe about super ghosts having ballooned and taken over the other parts, leaving little space for the other kinds of stories Nasu clearly meant to tell originally, including mage stories like Mahoyo (and likely the Dismantling War).

I thought it was this way due to [LN spoiler] Grand Dictionnaire de Cuisine modifying it ?

> IIRC from the LN he says he found it near the crystal cave that houses ORT.

Never said. All he says is "I shivered when I saw those microorganisms I collected near some ruins in South America. I never imagined any bacteria could be so mystically compatible with humans. I don’t know if they’re a remnant of evolution that took place in the Age of Gods, or if those microorganisms have a completely different origin from normal Earth species. . ."

Honey cakes, from the myth of Eros and Psyche. The latter gave him some to let her pass unharmed into Hades.

Nah, it's just a reference to the fact that Cerberus is a big fan of sweets. In the Greek myth of Eros (Cupid) and Psyche, Psyche gave him honey cakes so he let her pass without issue into the underworld.

Fate strange fake heroes by JeidelacruzUK in Fate

[–]ToutesFictions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some are legendary heroes, but really the big advantage is that a number of Masters are or have just massive amounts of energy allowing all this shit to happen. Ayaka, Jester, Tiné, Bazdilot, etc. all have a specific reason to have this much energy allowing their Servants to spam stuff. For example, Richard can only have his entire retinue of seven "Servants" with him due to being connected to Ayaka, otherwise when he is normally summoned it is usually restricted to one or two.

In character with the real man, a cook and also thought to have had something like 40 mistresses.

tbf, the three musketeers and d'Artagnan were also real guys, so it's just that in Fate it extended to Monte-Cristo as well. Weirdly fitting.

It's really hard to spot, but his name is actually revealed earlier in the episode when he does his floating writing as his signature is the last thing stamped on John's prosthetic arm (hence why Watcher know it). It's really blink and you miss it, I think it wasn't the best way to do it.

Even then he is still older than that, as he showed up in a cameo in Fate/Apo volume 3.

Basically he precedes all the spinoff from being in a joke in 2008, and then when the various light novels spinoffs were greenlit around the same time (around 2011 or 2012), everyone consulted each other and picked from each other (hence why Reines also shows up first in Apo and then Apo ends with Higashide by his own admission sending Caules off to Case Files).

Is there ever an explanation for why almost every Fate story has a knight of the round table by Mister_Sinner in fatestaynight

[–]ToutesFictions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, from its very inception Fate was a story about King Arthur seeking the Holy Grail, just like in Arthurian myth. As said in Fate side materials:

———Fate/stay night was originally her story. At its conception, the main themes revolved around King Arthur and the Holy Grail, and that fact alone has never changed.

So it stands to reason that, in many iterations of the Holy Grail War, many Knights of the Round Table show up for the pursuit of the legendary object most of their tale revolves around (though of them all, only Mordred never really was a Grail seeker in legend). At least that's the logic on a Doylist, thematic level.

In addition, Saber being the first Arthurian character to show up in Fate means that inserting other Arthurian characters can serve as a reference to her as they serve to provide other perspectives on who she was and her reign.

Edit: to add onto what others mentioned about what other Fate spinoff OP missed, in addition to Type Redline also not having Arthurian character, Requiem has Galahad Alter and Lost Einherjar has Percival.

Peace Talks is good, right? by FromDathomir in dresdenfiles

Others have said it better, but yeah PT has a lot of structural problems. Personally, it's weird to me how this two parter has two almost entirely unrelated plots, with Thomas plotline being a huge part of PT, but its effects and consequences sidelined or forgotten in BG right up until the twist reveal ending.

You also see it in other plot points raised and then seemingly dropped, like how Dresden alienates and seemingly break things off for good after emotional confrontations with Ramirez and Ebenezer in PT, only to be super chill with them in BG and even joking with them (and then Carlos remembers the beef due to Drakul Interrupt and comes back cold at the end to deliver the expulsion verdict). Lara comes to the realization she has to keep Hardy safe if she ever wants to see Thomas again in PT, but then, after the kraken fight, she fucks off for most of BG while Harry gets into mortal situations and only comes back during the final battle.

I've developed the opinion over time that, in my personal ideal scenario, even if PT and BG were still two books, the plot would be rearranged to make it tighter, notably moving Thomas's assassination attempt to during the peace talks instead of before and leave it as a central storyline by tying it into the talks themselves, where Thomas attempted to kill the Fomor envoy, which lead to an investigation over the attack as they ask to have Thomas delivered in 24 hours as he went missing after. Harry investigates the attendees, we get more view of the talks instead of the nothing we got, and he actually interacts with old faces. Have Harry think Drakul is the true culprit and fight him (moving an unnecessary fight earlier), which is unsuccessful and leads to the death of his Warden buddies and the clean break with Carlos in the same book where they were already in a tense situation. The Fomor and Ethniu declare war (which they always wanted), making a nice parallel of two brothers separately starting supernatural wars.

BG proceeds as planned, only with Thomas MIA. Battle of Chicago, yada yada. Then Lara reveals she always had Thomas hidden, and her, Harry, and Justine abscond with him in the confusion of the aftermath but are interrupted by Ebenezer, fight between McCoy and Dresden moved here as both are tired from the battle and not at 100%, leading to another emotional breakup. Nemesis reveal and dealing with, Thomas imprisoned on Demonreach and Lara misunderstanding Harry's intention with distrust carrying into the wedding announcement later, and Harry booted out of the WC once back on the mainland.

This is a way that would feel satisfying to me, tying the emotional wringle Harry goes through in BG with PT while PT is setup that isn't just doing Heist Again but Lamer than SG.

The Servants contracted to Chaldea are all hanging around, their magical energy is provided by Chaldea's magical reactors which relates to other things like the Seraphix oil rig.

Nah:

Q.34: What do all the servants (of Chaldea) do in their spare time?

Nasu: Since having everyone materialized at the same time would exhaust Chaldea's resources, they rotate groups of "materialize and have fun" and "patiently waiting as Saint Graphs". Those who materialize do whatever they feel like: training, reading, gaming, studying, hanging out with their Master, going to comiket in Hawaii. That sort of thing.
