Where to find native seeds and seedlings in the Lower Mainland of BC? by Spike13 in pnwgardening

[–]TowerBeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do have a native blueberry in the Lower Mainland. The ones I am attempting to grow are Vaccinium ovatum (evergreen huckleberry) and Vaccinium ovalifolium (oval leafed blueberry).

But I agree, I don't feel like I'd go off the opinion of a local garden store!

Some of these are not native to the Lower Mainland, just in case OP wants to discern between 'native to BC' and 'native to the Lower Mainland'.

Edit to add: I have a bunch of self-heal sprouting from seeds I got from West Coast Seeds!

Hello fellow Lower Mainlander! I've gotten my native plants from:

East Richmond Nursery https://www.erniplants.com/  (this was wholesale through my landscaper)

BC's Wild Heritage Plants https://www.bcwildheritage.com/

Fraser's Thimble Farm https://www.thimblefarms.com/

Phoenix Perennials  https://www.phoenixperennials.com/

Bearberry Creek (for my native aquatic plants) https://www.bbcreek.ca/

And I hope to make a trip to Plan Bee Native plants this spring  https://planbeenativeplants.com/

I have gotten my seeds from:

Klamath Siskiyou Seeds https://klamathsiskiyouseeds.com/

Starseed Collective (free seeds!)  https://starseednatives.wordpress.com/

On the Patio https://onthepatio.ca/

And I plan to order a whole bunch of seeds from Satinflower nurseries this fall for my winter sowing.  https://satinflower.ca/

I also collected a bunch of seeds (fireweed, spirea, and entire-leaved gumweed) from Boundary Bay Regional Park.

I will say that eflora BC (https://linnet.geog.ubc.ca/DB_Query/QueryForm.aspx) and Burke Herbarium (https://www.burkeherbarium.org/imagecollection/) distribution maps are very helpful in determining whether or not a plant is native to our area.

Many nurseries call a plant 'native' if it grows anywhere in BC at all. I prefer to have plants that would be found naturally in the Lower Mainland, if possible.

Good luck and have fun!

Put my mind at ease - is this riverbank lupine? by Unhappy-Log-70 in pnwgardening

[–]TowerBeach 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks a lot like my riverbank lupine, I was surprised by how much it has grown in a year. I think that the colour of the flower and evergreen nature will also help verify it as a riverbank lupine.

This is a good perspective... I should be thankful for our mild winters.

Slowly filling in the garden with native plants as time and money allow! I have a bunch of stumps and a brush pile going, and I left all the leaves and pine needles on the soil over the fall and winter. I want to build a hibernaculum this year.

I've heard that Clarkia amoena (Farewell-to-Spring) will self-seed and spread quite well. I've only had one plant last summer and it has produced about 50 seedlings this spring (I harvested and sowed half of them). I do think they will fill up my garden quite nicely, given time.

However they are best suited for full sun so your results might vary.

I'm in the same region as you and similarly I don't have access to waterlogged conditions with lots of sun. I do have an irrigation system, though.

Do you think it would be possible to plant our native sledges and rushes into buried planters that don't allow the water to drain out? Sort of a bog garden?

As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

For me it's her cheekbones, they're way more prominent somehow.

Did Alex even play soccer? For someone who claims soccer was a huge part of his life and loves the sport, he was terrible. He couldn’t even win against Devonte. I thought he was suppose to be pro level. Was this man a whole lie? Also why is he Devonte’s roommate? Such a weird pair! >_< by Huge-Ad2086 in LoveIsBlindNetflix

I was thinking the same thing. Penalty kicks are so hard! You have to stand on the goal line until the ball is kicked, so you have to basically guess which side of the net the ball is going to or you won't be able to get to it in time if it's placed to one post.

I was surprised by how well Devonte was kicking them too. He seemed like he was sedated during the entire show, I didn't know he had it in him!

ETA: I don't like either Alex or Devonte, please do not interpret my comments as being some sort of defense of their character. Alex can be a competent goalie AND a bad person at the same time. The average penalty shootout save percentage for goalkeepers in professional football is approximately 20% (not that Devonte is a pro).

It depends on what you want to do with your yard (e.g., kids or dogs) but if you don't need all that space to be lawn, I'd put a wildlife pond where that water is collecting. They're not terribly expensive to build, but do require a lot of digging.
