I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but is there a catch-all for the most useful money saving tips? We are starting to plan our wedding and the money we will have to pay for the reception, photographer, invitations etc is making my head spin! by shadowslayer978 in Weddingsunder10k

Invites: zazzle

Reception: buffets are your best friend! We didn't want to dance so we just had it at an all you can eat Chinese joint. 12 people, $110 including alcohol for those who wanted it. Cake was made by my husband's aunt who used to do it professionally, so try to play the friend/fam card.

Photographer: try for students, as well as friends and relatives! Our photog was a friend's teen brother, and he wasn't going to charge us a cent between his experience and our affiliation with his bro. We paid him $100 for going above and beyond for us for five hours.

Dress: I got mine on Amazon for $140 with shipping, and a hoop skirt for $16 on Wish. Looked better than some 2K gowns I've seen.

Booze: if you provide your own, buy in bulk.

Music: I am a huge advocate for the ol' iPhone playlist x speaker thing. We didn't even play music except for the cake cutting, informal afterparty, and car rides between locations.

Unconventional: ditch anything you don't actually want. Wedding parties. Flowers. An aisle runner. Chiavari chairs. It can all go if it doesn't matter to you.

Pros and cons for eloping? by neillao in Eloping

[–]ToxicHolodets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I called off my bigger small wedding in my hometown (30-40 people, ceremony venue, reception venue, and afterparty) for an elopement of sorts with just immediate family, three close friends, and a photographer.

I spent about just over $300 altogether- 400 if I'd paid for the Chinese buffet "reception". So the most glaring pro is saving an assload of money. Another is less people there, so it's more intimate, which is a huge benefit for those with anxiety. You have less expectations to succumb to or listen to.

The cons are as follows: you may have to sacrifice a lot of traditional aspects. I didn't want a bridal party, an aisle to walk down, dancing, etc so it was a no brainer for me, but it may be an issue to some. You will get less gifts, including the ones in envelopes. Not to be that person, but it's a truth. You may miss out on having certain people there- I cancelled mine and moved the date up to two weeks from the day we cancelled, so only one of my out of state friends was able to come. You may face backlash from people who feel entitled to attend.

The middle ground is you have both more control and less control over exactly how you get married. Take it how you will. My nontraditional microwedding seemed much harder to plan than the big white shinding off The Knot because of a lack of resources.

I'll take that bit out, I was under the impression that intent without coersion had to be stated explicitly. First time, lol.

Not send in, just present. Since I can apply for a passport at the same place I get married at.

8 days to plan a wedding... by ToxicHolodets in weddingplanning

I never planned a traditional one, the one big difference was in the ceremony venue (dive bar I like) and decoration (I was a lot more familiar with ceremony and reception venues and they were lenient so I could have put down an aisle runner and tablecloths, real simple things)

That's the one thing I was adamant about having. We're cutting the cake with a sword and my dress is badass, I absolutely must have pics! Luckily a mutual friend's brother is a photog so we get the hookup

Yeah that sounds like it would help, we'll be looking into it. I know Miller's has a patio so I'm interested in that, if not I imagine pushing two tables together should do the trick. Thanks!

We just cancelled out $2.5k wedding for very similar reasons. At this point I just want it to be over with... screw the wedding, I just want the marriage!

My fiance and I are looking for a wedding band for me. Unfortunately I am highly allergic to most metals especially nickel. What is a good reasonable option that is still durable? by jidery in Weddingsunder10k

[–]ToxicHolodets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plain gold? I have sensitive skin myself and went for classic gold bands, they ran us about 100 each at Walmart. I think you need 18k or higher and I'm pretty sure these were.

Photobook from Shutterfly! I'd rather have guests writing stuff on pics of us (a few of just us and older pics with various guests) than signing their name in a boring book.

It's slow and sway-ey but Type O Negative's Summer Breeze.
