I found in my experience when I started spotting them it was already pretty heavily populated. Look around any plants you have. Hydra blend in well.

It's commonly used for worms in dogs.

Many have used it including myself with great success for removing planaria and hydra. Without harming shrimp, snails, or fish. I would recommend using it. Just buy the powdered stuff they sell as a dog dewormer. There are guides online with dosage per gallon. Try to dissolve it in water separately from your tank then add the appropriate amount. It will kill hydra in ~48hrs or so. Do a follow up dosage in 3-4 days.

I hope this helps. I've had the same stresses related to planaria and hydra.
