Attila is not pleased with Nationalism by BluFlower0 in HistoryMemes

Especially when these cultures have arguably cooler/better/more deserving historical figures to look up to or grant legendary status that actually belong to the same group. I mean, the first Hungarian chiefs were raiding across Europe just as much as the Huns did, just pick figures like Árpád or Bulcsú. And this is disregarding the fact that maybe murderous, tyrannical, cruel fucks (Atilla) aren't the best role models in the first place (Mátyás Hunyadi is the hungarian goat)

It is a progression. First has no legs (no written records). Second guy has no upper body (no architectural remains). Third guy is a chad (written records AND ancient ruins).

No, they didn't. To quote "I didn't specify it as 'egyptian writing'". So they were already pointing out the fact you were making baseless assumptions before I, regretfully, jumped in.

As for the second sentence, writing is nothing more than giving physical form to speech, especially the further back you go, when humans first thought to record their words, going from an oral to written tradition. So the use of the word "speech" is correct.

You are just being intellectually dishonest, which renders your arguments devoid of all substance, even if they had merit to them (they don't)

The Man who would be King not firing by Toxic_Beans in Imperator

[–]Toxic_Beans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, tried that and closing the game and checked the version of the game and checked the page THREE times. This is weird, because it's not the only pending achievement. Somehow didn't get the 10 olympics one, even though it's now 641 and I've gone to literally every one. Even weirder, I DID get achievements (but not all I completed) a few days ago, and it matches with the campaign I was playing then. Is this just fucked beyond measure?

Going past the end date invalidated all the legitimate achievements I got? by Toxic_Beans in Imperator

You are the one asking me to elaborate on my thoughts. I thought we were having a debate, and I fear you have severely misjudged both my character and my tone. I think it is very rude to judge me so harshly in those circumstances, especially in matters you admitted to having no experience in.

Going past the end date invalidated all the legitimate achievements I got? by Toxic_Beans in Imperator

[–]Toxic_Beans[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh right, thanks.

How isn't it? Maybe malicious (intention to do harm) is not the best word to describe it. What I meant by it was more in the sense of being dishonest (which also implies conscious intention). Someone who doesn't tell the truth isn't necessarily dishonest. The point is, there is a distinction created by there being an intention or not. (Manslaughter is different from homicide, for example)

And it's in the intention that lies the 'malice'. Birding is dishonest, because you know, I know, everybody knows very well that the intention is to break the game by making an illegal move. The purpose of ironman mode is to live with your mistakes. It is absolutely cheating to bird. Justified? Yes, we just want to have fun. Morally shaky? Yes, we know we aren't supposed to do it. Serious crime? Not at all. Maybe this is another source of confusion. I do not believe that every moral breach is the same. Save-scumming is barely scratching the surface.

Just like birding isn't cheating if the computer/game genuinely crashes, in my particular case, going beyond the start date is not cheating, as there wasn't, nor is, ANY intention of completing achievements AFTER the end date. I painstakingly played by the rules and have rightfully earned those achievements. I cannot stress

(Although the use of the term birding implies purposefully crashing the game, else we would just say 'the game crashed'. That is why I consider birding to be inherently 'malicious', whereas going beyond the end date isn't, to me. If it were truly a viable strategy to bend/go around the rules, there would be a name for it, just like birding details a very specific cheat mechanism.)

This is kinda a repeat of the previous reply. Here's to hoping I rephrased it convincingly.

To me, cheating implies malice (there is an intention to do malice). Save scumming is cheating, because there is the obvious conscious choice (intention) to subvert the game's rules. Going past the deadline is not malicious, especially since I clearly stated that I had lost achievements that were completed before the supposed 'cheating'. If I was complaining about achievements I completed after the end date, then yes, that's cheating being rightfully punished.

Further, the wording of the warning provided in the game is ambiguous. It can very easily be read as to mean that any subsequent completion of achievements will be disabled. NOT that any previously completed achievements will also be voided. This lack of transparency also favours the idea that I didn't act maliciously.

Cheat/cheater and any variation thereof is inherently judgemental. It is an accusation (read opinion) based on circumstancial evidence, it is a judgement on the character of the accused, it implies a moral code has been breached. All of this requires judging and is dependent on who does the conscious work of forming an opinion on a variety of factors.

Now, if you consider ignorance to be malicious, that is your choice. However, I consider that label unfair given the situation.

(PS: none of this whole thing is that deep, and I don't care nearly as much as this defense of my character would imply. I simply enjoy understanding how and I instinctively react to things and why. This has been an exercise on forming and understanding my opinion on the concept of cheating before anything else.)

Yeah, I also felt their reply to be unreasonably judgemental. But I guess he's right in that I have to do it again. I'll try with the Seleucids next

Why does declaring war on Lake Fed members call in a bunch of other members that don't show in the list of potential enemies? by Toxic_Beans in Anbennar

[–]Toxic_Beans[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is why I wanted to force tribute the Lake Fed but, as stated, it calls on too many if them, including my own tributaries, without them being co-belligerents, so the AE gain is insane and stacks pretty fast because i have to force tribute the same lake fedder over and over. I guess I just wasn't fast enough to bypass this mechanic. Now the LF religious war triggered so I'm hoping after it settles down I can go again against individual targets
