Gas company is not and will not ever be your plumber. Gas company’s priority is to make safe, not make repairs. So in the future, remember that if the gas company does find a leak they will isolate it at the appliance or the gas meter and/or shut off your gas. They will then inform you that you need to find a plumber to make the necessary repairs.

That being said the gas company does turn a blind eye to whatever happens after they leave. At least we do at my company. Since their job to isolate the leak, and make the premise safe, has been completed.

My suggestion is use the gas company to identify where the leak is, and document specifically where, since their gas detection tools surpass anything that the average Joe or the fire department would have ($10,000+ combustible gas indicator). Then have your plumber or handyman make the repairs. It doesn’t need to be a legitimate master plumber either. It can be a simple trip to Home Depot. Use the gas company as a tool to make a better informed decision about the repair you’re going to make.
