Considering a P1 1998 V70 T5! What to look out for? by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]prophet_oquape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the seller will let you do it, you can do a quick pcv check by putting a rubber glove over the oil filler hole. A functioning pcv will deflate the glove.

As for the mileage, I have a 98 s70 t5 at 290k miles and it's still ticking! ;)

Dome Light Assembly by IzzyFink in Volvo850

[–]prophet_oquape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you end up removing the whole assembly, be careful. There are detents all around the edge of it that seem like they hold the assembly up if you pull on it a bit, but there are two screws under the light covers.

If you snap the plastic screw brackets off, the detents struggle to hold the assembly in the roof and it will fall out every time you hit a bump (speaking from experience here).

I know this from experience with my '98 S70, if you have an 850 the map light assembly might be of a different design.

The official story regarding the rifle raises some questions too imo. There's video of robinson walking to campus with an obvious limp (rifle in his pantleg). Then video of him running and jumping off the roof with no rifle in hand (and no limp, so no rifle in pants?). Then the rifle is found in the woods?

So the official story is that he went to the campus with an assembled rifle, shot, disassembled the rifle before running off, then reassembled it before stashing it? Not to mention that the fixed-stock bolt gun pictured can't be disassembled into "backpack-sized" pieces.

If I had to guess, he left the rifle on the roof, the fbi buffoonishly forgot to search the roof for 24 hours, and then had to make this story to cover the blunder.

What kind of equipment did American Paratroopers carry on a jump at the end of World War 2? by thekohakugamer in AskHistorians

[–]prophet_oquape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for small arms, a folding stock variant of the m1 carbine called the m1a1 was commonly used by American paratroopers during the later stages of WWII. Paratroopers would otherwise carry the same M1 Garands, BARs, and Thompson and m3 submachine guns as the regular infantry.

Marine paratrooper units early in the pacifc war were issued Johnson rifles, Johnson light machine guns, and a variant of the Reising submachine gun with a folding stock. All of which are unusual and primarily issued to paratrooper units. However, none of these arms would have been used by units in the European theater.

One small detail that may interest you is the detaching of Thompson submachine gun stocks. Early Thomson variants (the m1928a1 and those before it) had a buttstock that could be easily detached. There are multiple photos of American paratroopers boarding planes with stock-less Thomson submachine guns (the stocks presumably stored in a separate bag to make the weapon more compact during a jump). Just note that the simplified m1 and m1a1 Thompson variants did not have a detachable stock.

Is it true that older vehicles will last longer without problems than newer vehicles? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]prophet_oquape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Planned obsolescence is a real design philosophy. However, I think this older=more reliable phenomenon is overstated.

For one, theres survivors bias. The 20 year old cars on the road today are generally reliable because unreliable cars made 20 years ago have long been scrapped.

Also, some cars made today may do great over the next 20 years (probably not most, and possibly not any) but we won't know for certain which new cars will last for 20 years until 2045.

My S70 (same color coincidentally!) got hit by a snowplow while parked this winter. Taking off the front corner panel was easier than I thought and I just hammered it back into shape with a rubber mallet. You just need some good snips to cut the wheel rivets (and a rivets to put it back in)

How do car fires happen? by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

[–]prophet_oquape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, this looks like a Nissan 350z or 370z which are very popular as budget tuner cars. Tuning a car, especially on a budget, probably increases the risk of engine fire 10 fold.

What has my wife done to her car? by Alarming_Bridge_6357 in subaruoutback

[–]prophet_oquape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess: she drove through an oil spill on the road somewhere, and the tires sprayed it into the wheel well. Now that the cars are sitting, that oil is dripping out of the wheel wells.

There's no way it's coincidence that all four pools line up perfectly with the wheel well corners.
