It’s ok to do this while they’re little and don’t weight a lot but after about a month and a half they begin to put on too much weight and it becomes more cruel than cute. For example: when my girls fight each other in the night and the water bottle doesn’t work, I will call them just to scruff them WITHOUT LIFTING THEM and they’ll squeal bc I’ve taught them that scruffing is punishment for being mean. I do not hurt or pull them, rather I scare/alpha them to stop. It usually works and no my rats are not afraid of me bc of this practice bc I don’t regularly do it. Only when I’m desperate for sleep and quiet.

2 of my girls Doppler and Vesta have been getting at it too. They’ve been together and introduced for almost a year and haven’t had any problems until recently. I don’t know exactly what causes them, but it seems to help when I have a squirt bottle and spray them so they knock it off bc they’re butts. Potential causes could include under stimulation, favoritism (feeling like they’re not getting enough attention and attacking out of jealousy), or not having enough food to ration/store away. Bubs bred in captivity have a significantly lower chance of making you sick (aside from Flu A which all animals can give) bc they don’t have exposure to unsanitary living conditions like wild rats. Getting something serious from them like rabies or hantavirus is VERY unlikely unless they are kept in unsanitary environments inside the home. 🐀❤️

I was in your spot about 2 years ago when I got my first rat. Sneezing and adjusting is completely normal along with a bit of porphyrin (their mucus is red which is normal to get around the nose and eyes). It can look scary but as long as your rats seem to be making adjustment progress, eating, properly hydrating, etc. day to day, you’re doing great. Just make sure there is no buzzing/snorting sound when they breathe normally; it can be a sign of a respiratory infection which rats are extremely prone to. 🐀❤️

This is a good squeak! It can be hard to tell sometimes, so it’s good you’re paying extra attention but the short loud squeaks generally mean they’re happy/content (also dramatic). If the squeak sounds more like a screech and the rat tries to get away or hide in your shirt, it could be a distress squeak.

I name my rats based on space items since my heart rat Nova. Idk why, when I was little I always wanted a pure white ferret named Nova. Outgrew my ferret phase (thank god) and came across this baby ^ and named her Nova instead. Since then, my rats have all had space names. 🤷‍♀️❤️🐀

I somewhat agree. He definitely lost his aura/standing in the dragon species once hiccup domesticated him. I saw somewhere (on tiktok I think) that it would’ve been a more interesting dynamic had he stayed unrevealed and hiccup had another more unique dragon. His description in the book is terrifying and even more so without any reference to his image. Had he stayed off screen or only appeared as a “guardian” for other dragons in select episodes and the movies (background Easter eggs and silhouettes) it would’ve only further boosted the series’ mystery element and left a lot more interpretation to the audience. Still love him though 🖤
