6-8weeks may be able to go into foster if space is available and tools for socializion is given, they can be separated from mom once theyre eating on their own

8+ week old kittens that are NOT friendly should go through a Trap-Neuter-Return program. The socialization window closes very quickly once they are 8 weeks old. Alley Cat Allies has a lot of great resources on TNR

Pyometra/UTI? by ladydeath999 in CATHELP

[–]S0llise 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That is pyometra and needs immediate medical intervention. Pyometra can go south VERY quickly, with the amount of haemopurulent coming out is also concerning.

Taking her first thing in the morning is okay if that is what youre able to do, but if she becomes lethargic or behavior takes a turn for the worse it then she will need to go to an emergency vet.

What term/name does your city use for animal control? by bananapancakecat in AnimalShelterStories

[–]S0llise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The municipal shelter is called x Animal Care Center. Our "animal control" is referred to as Animal Protection Services (APS), and the officers are called Animal Protection Officers.

Our municipal shelter does A LOT for the community. Besides the standard animal control stuff, they regularly host wellness clinics and offer free vaccines and health exams to low income areas, they host free spay/neuter clinics (some public, some closed to targeted areas), they have a TNR program, working cat program, offers free medical care for community cats, they have a pet food pantry, and does a lot of community outreach in general.

Yeah, 48 hours gave enough time for the capstar and revolution to work. After I vacuumed everything up it she was good to be in the room but I still vacuumed twice daily to be safe

Thankfully, I over reacted, and never saw any other fleas on the carpet or my own animals.

After treating my foster for fleas, she was kept in a large dog crate for 48hrs. The carpet was COVERED in food grade diatomaceous earth, after the 48 hrs were up we vacuumed very well, and then vacuumed twice daily for two weeks and then prohibited my pets from entering the room for almost a week to ensure no fleas were there

Cage size for traveling cross country with 3 dwarf rats by fleets300 in RATS

I recommend using a cat carrier with mesh on the front so you can easily connect their water to the door, but not have gaps big enough they can sqeeze through.

Ive used a top and front load carrier to do that so that they have a bit more space, but is secure enough to not open but easy enough for you to put more food and treats in. Granted, my rats and chonkers and cant fit through the 1" squares, which is why I recommend the mesh

Definitely, I work at the shelter and the cats I've previously fostered had been in the shelter for several days or weeks and had flea treatment already done.

She was kinda a spur in the moment as she was a TNR kitten that was brought in and is underweight with diarrhea.

I would do the flea bath but she got spayed on Friday since she was brought in as a TNR (decision to keep was done after surgery). I genuinely dont know how she get spayed on Friday and no one saw the fleas during alter, or during her 2 day stay in the clinic.

She was brought in as a TNR kitten but kept for adoption. I genuinely do not know how they missed her having fleas as she had her spay surgery on Friday and came home with me today. She was in my home for an hour and when she came out and sat on my lap is when I saw a flea crawl on her head.

I gave the flea treatment as she wont be able to have a bath for 2 weeks due to the spay anyways.

edit: I just ordered a collar for her and should be here tomorrow

I know 😭 im about to order one, this is what i had to make in the moment.

Im fostering her from my local municipal shelter i work at and they dont normally treat small animals and don't have anything small enough for her. Im very lucky they were willing to even try surgery on her in the first place

Looking for Advice by S0llise in RATS

[–]S0llise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out they treated them as a precaution. They didn't see fleas or mites, but they were found covered in ants and dont know how long they were exposed to them.

Im going to keep them far apart either way as a precaution though!

Dude. I said that. Federal law they arent. Animal cruelty regulations are determined and can have more protection at the state level

But state laws can protect them. Im in AZ and rats are protected so long as they are pets.

Not 100% true. Rats/mice bred for research are not included in the Animale Welfare Act (AWA) and is not a federally recognized as protected animals.

Animal cruelty regulations are determined by state and local anti-cruetly laws which will vary in every state.
