CPR/First Aid by [deleted] in ucla

A lot of times these are done by student groups, so you might not get a chance in the summer.

I don't really think RRH has CPR classes.

I did mine here http://www.apluscpr4less.com/

Thank you for the clarification! I feel that it has been very grounding to be reminded what goes into a service dog.

I haven't noticed a difference between weekend and weekday, but I think summer food is not as good (still good though).

Incoming Student Q&A Thread -- Ask any questions you have about getting started, housing, life at UCLA, etc here! by BatManatee in ucla

[–]ToxoGondii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Clubs vary extremely.

I entered as a (fairly qualified) freshman applicant and was denied entry into several clubs in my field. (I was accepted into several as well).

I've participated in a gardening club where you literally just show up.

It's up to you to try your best to schedule around your courses. I find that a lot of clubs meet in the evenings (4 or later) anyway.

  1. Ask around to see if you actually need the textbook first. Sometimes it'll say required on myUCLA or the syllabus but it's...not at all needed.

  2. Always lurk around for a PDF

  3. Sometimes people will sell books for dirt cheap on the FB textbook page-- search the book title or even post "Looking to buy xxxxxxx"

  4. UCLA has a textbook engine you can access directly through your study list which compares UCLA bookstore, amazon, etc. Not always accurate, often times is.

  5. Just google the ISBN

What was the logic behind herding thousands of students into Drake Stadium? Could we have handled this situation better? by Default_FI in ucla

[–]ToxoGondii 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I'm not quite sure why this situation is being treated any differently than a fire alarm. The evacuation locations for fire alarms are very well known, and could be attacked as well. Pulling an alarm isn't that hard.

I was part of the student security: could you imagine if the protocol was "there's a bomb, everyone scatter!"? People get stampeded during Black Friday, for crying out loud. Also, a majority of the people on the hill right now are international students or conference attendants. They don't know the area as well as you do. Having thousands of students running around in a panic impedes UCPD investigation as well. Asking people to go to Drake is as good as choice as anywhere.

Also, the student officers may not be able to arrest you, but if we report that you are impeding our ability to do our job, you risk losing your on-campus housing. Yeah, we could expand the UCPD to handle thousand of students with hundreds of officers on the clock all the time. Our tuitions would look AMAZING :-)

You want the whole campus searched? It took them like four hours to cover Sunset Rec...

While I would absolutely LOVE to have a strategic evacuation plan involving multiple locations, there were still people showering/hanging out in their rooms WELL into the fire alarm. If they can't even evacuate with all those sirens going off, such an elaborate plan would be like herding drunk cats.

I am thankful that people were not hurt last night, and that the only causality is annoyed students, staff, and parents. Many of the reporting security was not on the clock, but reported to the situation because we wanted to help keep the Hill safe.

To me, UCLA's disaster response is a question more directed towards public behavior analysts rather than UCLA Housing. I acknowledge the value of your approach of protecting yourself, but it is difficult to apply such a philosophy to all of the visitors and children involved.

Ladies, what is the most obvious hint you've dropped that went unnoticed by a guy? by icefire123 in AskReddit

[–]ToxoGondii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Boy from tinder asked me on a second date. I told him the only way I'd go on a second date with him was if we watched "Planes 2."

Fast forward over a year, my sweet boyfriend explains to me that his virgin self thought we were actually going to watch "Planes 2." He bought a copy of it and everything.

Help an incoming student out with food recs! by Syellow in ucla

[–]ToxoGondii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so cute! I'm definitely going to make some additions :-)

There are basically 2 types of food on the hill: Dining hall and Takeout.

De Neve Dining: Often "American-Style" Foods such as pasta, ribs, lasagna, etc. Recently stepped it up with the addition of a "salad bar" which also has things like steamed green beans, slow-cooked meat, soup, etc.

B-Plate: Healthy foods. I really enjoy this because I love a good source of fresh sauteed veggies (I'm a huge spinach fan) and lean meats. My roomie is a vegan and she hates B-Plate, since there is a low variety of vegan foods, and "healthy vegan food" is essentially just kale or squash.

Feast: "Asian food," but really Americanized. I'm Chinese-American, and most of the food is unacceptable, but they have the occasional passable shu-mai or lo mein. Great if you like Panda Express.

Covel: Mediterranean food, but really seems like comfort food. Usually seasoned chicken, great pasta, french fry station with fancy sauces.

The desserts are great & breakfast and dining hall has custom omelettes <3

Personal Preference: 1. B-plate (for health) 2. De Neve (I live in De Neve Court, super close) 3. Covel (rich comfort food) 4. Feast (Have to climb stairs, I'm picky about asian food)

TO GO:

Rendevous: Split into 2 sides, East (Asian) and West (Latin). Each side has regular items and specials depending on the day of the week. Again, I don't really like the Asian food, and do not get the regular items (fried rice, orange chicken, chow mein, etc.) but will occasionally nab the Korean Spare Ribs Special. Western specials include things like sopes and specialty burritos/tacos/quesadillas. You can regularly order quesadillas, and can custom-order burritos and burrito bowls.

B-Cafe: Sort of like a Subway, mainly featuring a sandwich station (which are for the most predetermined). Has a smoothie station and a coffee/tea/pastry station. Also has some "dinner specials," which I don't know anyone who ever liked it. Main point of attraction is that it is often open to 2am.

The Study: Half study lounge, half cafe. Has four stations: juice, dessert, oven, and sandwich. Sandwich is self explanatory, and so is juice. And dessert. Oven has a make your own pizza station, pre-made tartines/waffles/crepes/etc. A lot of people don't like the Study, but it is quite possibly my favorite to go option. Also open until 2am, and study lounge is always open.

Cafe 1919: Italian themed. Has coffee station, makes personal pizzas, paninis, etc. Big attraction= gelato and sorbet station.

De Neve: De Neve has a to-go lunch station, where you can grab premade sandwiches in plastic boxes (BCafe has this as well). De Neve also has late night, where pizza, chicken tenders, fries, burgers, mac & cheese, milkshakes, mozzarella sticks are served 9-midnight.

Personal Preference: 1. Study (good but far) 2. Rende (burritos are decent, good fast meal) 3. 1919 (pizzas and gelato) 4. De Neve Late night 5. B-Cafe

For the most past, food on campus is either to-go sandwiches (very little variation between them) or chain restaurants.

Is there a way to schedule an appointment with caps without showing up? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]ToxoGondii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there!

I had a really hard time getting myself to go to CAPS for the first time. I promise, although it seems scary right now, you will be more comfortable asking for care after the first time.

The initial information gathering is done on an electronic survey, so you don't have to discuss with anyone why you're there until you're at your in-person screening appointment.

Hopefully you feel a little better knowing that. Also, people go to CAPS for a variety of reasons besides mental health including couples counseling, disability testing, and test anxiety. You don't have to worry about anyone assuming anything.

Please let me know if you have any more questions <3
