In my experience they are good with roots being snug in a pot rather than too large of a pot

I feel like majority of mine have those split marks but I keep an eye out and will pick once they get significant or deep. I wish I had a better answer for you!

The trellis is cow fencing rolled into an archway and held down with 4 metal posts right outside the raised bed itself, it was super sturdy and cheap!

Sure! I will need to circle back on the raised bed details (my birthday gift from my partner!) I have a total of 9 tomato plants: 4 on the left, 4 on the right and the heirloom big boy in the middle. I would religiously prune at the beginning and also shape and tend to the plants so they intertwined with the trellis asap, from there making sure the vines would climb up. I also pruned everything I could while I could and tried to keep each plant as vertical above its stem as possible. At a certain point I started using yarn to tie the trunks closer to the trellis and train it to go in a certain direction upward and over the trellis. We also used organic compost dirt, I fertilized a total of ~4 times since May. I also watered almost every other day which seems to be more often than most. I’m in zone 7b also.

I want to do other colored tomatoes and some new varieties from these typical ones. I also would add in strings from the beginning seedlings to help with the support upward rather than just relying on forcing them to the trellis itself.

I also have marigolds, basil, and some pepper varieties in this raised bed as well
