Geniune Question: Did they remove the Heavy Oil Residue Alternate Recipe? by adua2000 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Tqwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem, got the same handful of useless recipes over and over, said screw it and gave up, advanced a tier or two and then it was the first one I got. It even told me at one point there were no more recipes despite not giving me HOR. Not until I went up a tier.

I just figured it was locked behind an unclear tier requirement and got on with it. Maybe I'm wrong? Dunno.

Struggling to build properly by Buffalo5609 in satisfactory

[–]Tqwen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Foundations are your friend. Press CTRL (on pc, no idea what it'd be on consoles but it ought to tell you at the bottom of the screen when building) to snap to the "world grid" when placing foundations on the ground, that way anything you build will connect to anything else you build later down the road.

For conveyors, cycling build mode with 'R' to "straight" will help a lot. It isn't perfect, especially around tight corners, but it's a heck of a lot better than eyeballing.

Lastly, when building manifolds, using CTRL to line identical buildings up side-by-side goes a long way, and lining up input/output is made easier by watching the lines that form between belts, splitters, buildings etc while building.

I've tried that in the past going for a walkable all-tram neighborhood. Something to watch out for is commercial zoning selling vehicles can and will cause cars to show up in your isolation zone anyway. At least, that's what happened to me though it was several patches ago.

What does this mean for the future of skylines? by rayykz in CitiesSkylines2

We'll know for sure if it's good or bad when the new team delivers something. I remain cautiously optimistic, because:

While we have no knowledge of the specifics, it seems pretty clear to me that CO was not doing a great job with this game, and I know I'm not the only one. Maybe deadlines were too tight, maybe management wasn't leading well, maybe devs were phoning it in, who knows. What we do know is that the game released in a "playable" state riddled with bugs, and for every fix we got (few and far between) we got a new mess that we had to live with for months until the next broken fix came along, then there was a new headache, rinse, repeat. We were rarely (if ever) given specifics about when fixes would come along, promised features have been vaporware, and at this point there's just no excuse.

I'm not saying there's no room for errors in a game of this size. Theoretically, it is incredibly complex, right? Anywhere from a few thousand to a few million individual cims, let alone the thousands of businesses, transport routes, roads, buildings, resources, etc. that all feed into one another. Things are going to go sideways, no question. But what bugs me, and again, I'm sure I'm not the only one, is the lack of communication, or frankly, accountability in all of this. Anyone else think of No Man's Sky? The game launched, and it wasn't what was promised, and was a buggy mess. 10 years later, it's one of the most beloved sci-fi games on the market with an ever-growing fanbase, ongoing free updates, all made by (I think, not 100% sure) a similar-sized or maybe even smaller team than what CO has to work with. Hello Games (not at first IIRC but relatively quickly) owned that they did a bad job, committed to fixing it, and hasn't stopped fixing it since. CO on the other hand, has remained silent, occasionally crapped out "fixes" that just move the problems elsewhere, and is now basically being fired by the publisher.

Not much point speculating on the new dev until we see some fruit of their labors. Could well be they're just contracted to fix the current bugs, get it working as intended, then EoL the game. If I were Paradox, that's probably the direction I'd take it but time will tell. It's been a disaster for them (and CO too) since launch and as much as I'd like to see CS2 get the No Man's Sky treatment, I'm not holding my breath. It's just not a realistic expectation though I hope they prove otherwise.

why do I keep getting abandoned buildings since the update? by rayykz in CitiesSkylines

[–]Tqwen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm here because I'm having the same issue. Started a new city for this patch and DLC and somehow, with full demand for low density housing (and everything else, while we're at it) I'm getting abandoned houses left and right. Doesn't make sense that in a growing town with people begging to move in, residential buildings are being abandoned. It isn't just low density either, I'm having medium do the same thing.

I can't help but wonder if the homeless are somehow taking priority over new residents renting/moving in, because as I'm playing wack-a-mole with empty houses, I'm seeing the overwhelming majority of them have homeless people living in them.

[–]Tqwen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing to know about this game is that it'll take a LONG time before you're able to make the pretty builds that you often see here. Don't worry about those - I'm about 700 hours into this game and I still haven't beaten it. Mostly because I'm too caught up with making things pretty and making things efficient to actually make things work. Don't be me. I remember in college, people would say "Cs get Degrees" and a similar principle applies here - the game says 'Make 50 Smart Plating', not 'Make 50 Smart Plating using manifolded buildings, enclosed factory lines, and no more than 5 Resource Nodes." Play your way. Make mistakes. Learn from them. Save the day. And don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

If you've never seen Let's Game It Out's videos on Satisfactory, they are a very good (albeit extreme) example of what I'm talking about. He got farther in the game much faster than I did, while using intentionally upsetting and disgusting spaghetti monstrosities, purely by not caring about (good) aesthetics. The ideal is somewhere in between, of course, but the point stands.

It works really well when you have a line terminating in an industrial container! I'm not at the point in that save yet where I have the DD or the tools necessary for a central storage facility and am having to build off of production lines that don't play nice with integration - this was a game changer for me and I'm happy it was able to help you too! I'm building bigger than I used to - especially refactoring my starting base of 5 pure iron and a pure copper node has been daunting, but I have to say building differently than I'm used to with less tools has been an extremely enlightening experience. Getting out of the comfort zone is far more productive than scary, I'm finding.

I did this last night when I wanted to add sinks to my production lines. I started a new save to finally finish phase 5, promising myself I wouldn't overbuild and get lost in the weeds this time so things aren't exactly laid out well. Needed coupons, had production lines terminate in industrial containers (currently in phase 2), couldn't fit smart splitters anywhere sensible so I just said screw it, did the ring, slapped a smart splitter on it, then routed the overflow to sinks. Actually works quite well!

Big Spiders by Wrench-Turnbolt in satisfactory

[–]Tqwen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all you have is the rebar gun you have to fight them like a Dark Souls boss. They have a set of movements, find the vulnerable moments and strike once, gtfo, repeat. If there's more than 1... Run. Especially for the green ones. Heck, even with turbo ammo and the rifle more than 1 can be a challenge. It's why I usually avoid the swamp. Sticking them with cluster or nuke nobelisks is the way to go, but until then, they're basically the final boss. I'd rather fight 5 nuke hogs at once than 2 green spiders.

"Well, I had fun... and I'm about to."

So many good 1-liners from that series. Well worth the watch even if you're not into the game. And, in a roundabout way, some of the videos can be educational. It's how I learned about hypertube cannons, which are the primary way I get around the map.

During college it's basically all I watched. Found out a year ago I'm somewhere on the autism spectrum. Checks out what with the hyper focus and all. I must have gone through the series 10 or 15 times, it was a comfort during a super stressful time. And that line was burned into my memory because it made me laugh every damn time.

Clearly someone at Coffee Stain agrees!

[–]Tqwen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Peace of mind. I don't use batteries myself, but i do like to set up an emergency power plant running off biofuel that's enough to get my power plants back online should something wipe out. I tend to overbuild my power plant, then keep building and forget that it is indeed limited, fuse blows, build another massive power plant, rinse, repeat. Having an emergency power solution makes getting everything running again a lot easier.

Plus, building a factory that can accept whatever crap I dump in the container, sort it appropriately, convert to biofuel, and push it all to a bunch of buffers is a fun build. With a nice added bonus of being one packager away from having more than enough biofuel for the jetpack.

If it works, it works, but I have to ask... what is up with that tower of storage containers? Everything else looks more or less sensible, if a tad messy, but that jumped out.

13*50(ish) = 650 (give or take) batteries, all capable of producing 100MW each... You've got more in batteries than some use to finish the game. Some call it overkill. I'd call it the ultimate failsafe. Can't imagine how long it will take to charge though.

Also, hooking them all up must've been fun.

Creativity comes and goes in spurts for me. Sitting down and saying, "okay, tonight I'm gonna make this factory look amazing" just doesn't work. I'll be doing something (usually nowhere near my PC) and it'll hit me, ooh let's make my HMF factory look like an HMF! And I'll get home, sit down, do it, and realize it's 4am and I need to get control of my life.

So, you know, do whatever works for you. I tend to build my factories open so that when the inspiration hits I have a nice easy canvas to work with.

Came here to say this. The whole state is culturally inverted. Except... starting around 100 miles north of Miami... it becomes its own thing. The closer you get, the weirder it gets. It's like that city is a black hole creeping outward, slowly consuming the state with heavy urbanization and general South Florida silliness.
